There are times in life when very difficult choices must be made. People get fired. Projects get dropped. And candidates for Congress lose their lifeline from the national party.
On Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee yanked advertising dollars for four incumbent GOP lawmakers in the House, pretty much signaling that they are on their own for November 4th.
The four include Rep. Tom Feeney of Florida, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Rep. Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado and Rep. Joe Knollenberg of Michigan.
Bachmann has created the biggest public relations stink in the last few days, after she said on TV that Barack Obama might have "anti-American" views.
The uproar after that resulted in a huge windfall of donations for Bachmann's Democratic opponent, who suddenly raised $1 million in just a few days.
Bachmann acknowledged to a Minnesota newspaper on Monday that her quote about Obama and suggestion that the media investigate liberals in Congress for anti-American views was "big mistake."
Bachmann isn't broke by any means. She still has about a million bucks to spend, but she won't have any help from the national party.
Feeney, a former Speaker of the State House in Florida, has suffered because of his links to convicted uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Feeney went as far as to run ads in September where he apologized to his constituents over his ties to Abramoff, which included a golfing trip to St. Andrews in Scotland.
We'll see whether Feeney can survive in November. After all, he supposedly had his district lines drawn just for him when he ran for Congress in 2002.
Feeney, Bachmann and Musgrave all are very conservative, but Knollenberg is known as more of a moderate.
