More Than 100 Days

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

This week will be dominated by talk of what President Obama has done in his first 100 days.  But let's face facts. All Presidents must deal with much more than that.

As for the 100 day story line, I've never been one that thinks much of it, feeling it's a bit over hyped.

I went back to look at my stories from that point in the Clinton and Bush years and my stories are much the same.

The party in power loves the work of their President. The party not in control of the White House gives that person a failing grade.

And that's where we are yet again.

"We got a real strong start in the first 100 days," said a key Presidential adviser.

Who was that?  That was Karl Rove in April of 2001, talking about George W. Bush.

Polls back then showed Bush with positive approval ratings of over 60 percent.

Hmmm.  That's where Barack Obama is today as well.

(Bill Clinton was only in the mid 50's.)

In other words, it doesn't predict overall success and/or failure.

Which leads me to my overall point - yes, the first 100 days are important.  But so are the second 100, and the 100 after that.

Golf tournaments don't end after three holes, or maybe halfway onto the back nine.  You've got to grind your way through every round to get to the finish.

The same is true for the occupant of the White House.

Obama may have gotten off to a good start - and I think supporters can legitimately point to a series of legislative victories - but that doesn't guarantee success at the end.

Just look at the last President.  He was doing well at the beginning, but by the end, he had trouble with those who identified themselves in polls as Republicans.

Go back one more and you find that Bill Clinton wasted his honeymoon before he even took office for the most part.

Then that Monica Lewinsky thing didn't exactly endear him to a lot of people in either party.

Right now, Obama has the luxury of facing an opposing party that is still searching for a way to eat into his approval ratings.

Whether he can steamroll them in the second one hundred days will be an interesting thing to watch.
