As the Obama Administration issued travel alerts about going to Mexico yesterday, there were a few voices in Congress urging a complete shutdown of air flights and even the land border between the U.S. and its southern neighbor.

"Mexico is the origin of this outbreak and we need to cut this spread off at the root by limiting travel," said Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York City.

Over the weekend, Weiner's fellow New York Democrat Eric Massa called for a shutdown of the land border, arguing it's the best way to limit the spread of the swine flu.

"The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved," said Massa.

"We are proceeding as if we are preparatory to a full pandemic," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.  "We don't know if a full pandemic will actually occur."

As for closing down the border, "That's a very difficult judgment to make," Napolitano told reporters at a briefing in Washington, D.C.

So for now, it's not the choice of the Obama Administration. 

Whether that changes depends on what happens with the swine flu outbreak here.

If it expands dramatically, then you may expect to see more dramatic measures.
