As we get deeper into the debate on health care in the Congress, we've been hearing more and more from critics who charge that lawmakers enjoy "Cadillac" health plans.
When it comes to health care, lawmakers enjoy a number of choices in terms of benefit options, deductibles and more.
But their choices are just the same as other federal government workers. There is no "Congressional" health plan that is different from what anyone at every federal agency is offered.
A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that in some ways, the feds offer better benefits than the average health insurance policy, like lower than average premiums for families, but premiums for individuals are actually higher than average.
Here's a good story from June that was in USA Today, which runs it down - http://bit.ly/x9rhB
Still, it's become a rallying cry of sorts for critics, who argue that lawmakers should put themselves into any "public option" for government health insurance.
"The people are tired of this body making laws and crafting programs without having to face the consequences of the votes cast for them," said Rep. John Fleming (R-LA).
Fleming has introduced a resolution that says members of Congress who vote for the Democrats' health insurance bill should put their money where their mouth is and take any public insurance option.
"If it is good enough for American families, it should be good enough for families of Members of Congress," said Fleming.
While lines like that are generally shrugged off by backers of the health care reform effort, I'm sure we will hear more and more talk like that, because it certainly is a message that will resonate with opponents of the Obama health care drive.
While Republicans have been almost totally shut out of this legislative process so far, this is one way that they can stay engaged, by lobbing verbal grenades at the Democrats, and encouraging their home state voters to chime in as well.
If you're in the GOP, why not add a little gasoline to the health care fire? It makes for good sound bites and keeps the Democrats on the run.
