In recent days, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made no bones about who will be the target for Democrats as the health care debate heats up in August: the Health Insurance Industry.
"They know the glory days are over," the Speaker said at a news conference last Friday before Democrats in the House headed home until Labor Day.
"Congress and the President will remove the insurance industry from coming between the patient and his or her doctor," she said.
The Speaker went on to use words like "obscene" to describe the industry's profits, also labeling them "immoral" and "villains."
It's all part of a recent line of attacks by Democrats, in which they've altered their call for "health care reform," and turned it into "health insurance reform."
Pelosi showed off a talking points card that was given to Democratic lawmakers, "We have given our Members this card to take home, perhaps you have seen it: "Health Insurance Reform to Hold the Insurance Companies Accountable."
The Speaker railed against an expected rush of advertising from the industry against the Democratic health plan, "This is a shock and awe, carpet bombing by the health insurance industry to perpetuate the status quo," she fumed.
"Make no mistake, facts mean nothing to them, mythology is their game," said the Speaker.
Got any questions about who the bad guy is right now in the eyes of Democratic leaders?
This will be an interesting August, especially if the industry fills the airwaves of radio and TV with ads slamming the health care bill.
Often those ad campaigns are more effective than the rejoinders of Congressional leaders or even a President.
Let the ad wars begin!
