Some SCOTUS Warmup

We may get a bit of a warmup session on a Supreme Court nomination today in the Senate Judiciary Committee, as that panel meets to hear testimony from a controversial nominee to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Most of you probably haven't heard one bit about the Liu nomination, but it began to bubble about a week ago because of information that the nominee failed to disclose on the routine questionnaire given to judicial nominees.

On Tuesday, Liu gave the Judiciary Committee 117 items that had not been included on the original questionnaire which deals with a nominee's record - things like speeches, articles and more - saying the omissions were inadvertent.

But yesterday, even more items surfaced, many of which Republicans said could easily be found by internet searches, which led to another call for today's hearing to be delayed.

"As we approach the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation hearings, it is very important to me that we continue our good working relationship--a relationship that I very much appreciate," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) in a letter to committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT).

While Leahy acknowledged that he was disappointed over some missing materials, he rejected a call from Sessions to delay this nomination hearing.

"Professor Liu has not been a stealth candidate, " Leahy said.  "He has produced voluminous materials.  Committee members have had more than seven weeks to review this nominee's record."

Who is Liu?  He is a law professor at the University of California in Berkeley, who once clerked for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  He has never been a judge.

You can see his U-Cal-Berkeley profile at http://bit.ly/aDrkOi .

Heck, there is even a website backing his nomination at http://www.confirmgoodwin.com/ . You don't see that too often for a Circuit Court nominee.

This could be an interesting nomination to watch - not only because many conservatives charge that Liu is a radical left winger - but because of the timing, the pre-season before the big Supreme Court showdown.

Almost anything dealing with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals takes on a political hue in the Congress, and this hearing will be no different.

Is his nomination really in jeopardy?  We'll see how his hearing goes today.
