Are you ready for Labor Day? Probably not, since it is only July 26. But on Capitol Hill, Labor Day is on everyone's mind, because after this week, the House won't be back in Washington, D.C. until September 7.
While this is the normal August Recess that lawmakers get each year, in 2010 it comes as House members are leaving town with a lot of work still unfinished.
Usually by now, the House is on the verge of wrapping up work on all 12 of the yearly spending bills for next year's budget.
But this year, not one of those bills has made it to the House floor.
According to this week's schedule, that will change, as a bill on military construction and veterans programs, along with another one on transportation and housing are actually on the schedule.
The biggest item for the House to deal with before leaving town is the bill that sends extra funds to the military for the War in Afghanistan.
But there are some legislative "cats and dogs" as well - that's how we refer to the legislative grab bag of measures that seem to get considered right before a Congressional recess.
For example, there is H.Res. 1525, which will honor the 50th anniversary of the book "To Kill A Mockingbird."
Add to that, H. Con. Res. 226, which supports the observance of "Spirit of '45 Day."
There is also H. Res. 1366, "Recognizing and honoring the freight rail industry."
And one more, H.R. 2480, the "Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2009."
While the advisory to members say the last vote in the House this week is predicted to be on "Friday p.m." - I'll believe it when I see it.
The horse is heading to the barn.
And the horse wants to get on a plane by Thursday, with no return reservations until Tuesday, September 7.
