A DARK DAY IN HISTORY

It's July 1st. The First of July. A rather major (and increasingly meaningless) holiday is just three days away.

Today marks the anniversary of withholding taxes from your paycheck. Withholding started on July 1, 1943. That's 60 years ago. The politicial class needed an excuse to move to the withholding, and World War II served that purpose nicely. We were told it was all about cash flow. The government didn't have the luxury of waiting to get its share of your income. Don't worry, though. We will all go back to the normal routine of paying our taxes yearly when the war is over. Again ... that was 60 years ago, and about 58 years since the end of World War II.

Why is withholding so bad? Because is effectively masks the amount of income taxes American workers pay. Tax withholding introduced a new phrase into the American lexicon: "Take home pay."

Today the average American has no idea how much they actually make, let alone how much they pay in income taxes. Ask them what they make and they will tell you what they "take home." Ask them what they paid in taxes last year and they will tell you only what they had to pay, or how much they "got back" on April 15th.

The only time the average American is ever really aware of the impact of income taxes on their actual wages is when they are given a bonus. The boss will tell them "You're going to get a $10,000 bonus on your next paycheck." Instantly the employee creates this image of $10,000. That's 100 C-Notes! Wow! This euphoria lasts right up until the magic moment that bonus check is pulled out of the envelope. Suddenly, reality sets in. The check isn't for $10,000. It's for about $5,200! You get about one-half of what you thought was coming! TAXES! Social Security, Medicare, Federal income, state taxes!

This is an outrage that is simply not felt when those bi-weekly paychecks arrive. That's because you're conditioned - conditioned by withholding - to think only in terms of your "take home." It's as if the rest of that paycheck, that portion seized by government, never existed at all.

How wonderful this all is for the political class! They manage to plunder your paycheck to fund their grand vote-buying schemes, and you barely notice. Today's the day, folks. The day that led to the dumbing-down of the American wage earner.

FRIDAY'S HOLIDAY

Most of us will not be working on Friday. It's time for fireworks, road races, picnics, ball games and parades. It's the Fourth of July.

This is the day that we are traditionally supposed to celebrate our freedoms. We commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.

Independence? Did I say Independence? Am I the only one out here who thinks there is something just a bit absurd about Americans celebrating the idea of independence this Friday?

I'll probably have much more to say about this before the end of the week, but people who are clamoring for government provided this, that and the other thing have little business gushing over the idea of freedom and liberty. You can't demand that the government provide for your every need on the one hand, and pat yourself on the back for being a freedom-loving American on the other.

Do you have any idea what was on the minds of the colonists when they heard that bell ringing in Philadelphia? Were they thinking that this whole Declaration of Independence thing is a good idea because finally they would be able to use the government as an instrument of plunder?

Wouldn't it be a nice thing this Fourth of July to actually give some thought to what freedom actually means? There is an element of personal responsibility there too, you know.

LICENSE PLATE

On the way to the studios today I saw a vanity license plate with the letters "MTV." I certainly hope that this plate belong to someone named Marvin Vincent Thomas, or something like that. If the owner of that car was actually proclaiming some undying affection to the MTV music channel on cable ... well, lets just say that would be a person with whom you couldn't engage in intelligent conversation for longer than about 150 seconds.

GEORGE BUSH LIED?

This is the current favorite of the left. The word is out. Keep repeating the idea that George Bush intentionally lied to the American people in order to get them to support a war to 86 Saddam Hussein.

You do know the definition of a lie, don't you? A lie is a statement made with knowledge, at the time the statement was made, that it was not true. The key here is that you had to know the statement to be untrue at the time you made it in order for that statement to be categorized as a lie. If, for instance, If I told you last week that Katherine Hepburn was going to be a guest on my show this Wednesday, that statement would not have been a lie. I did not know, at the time I made that statement, that Katherine Hepburn would be taking the eternal celestial dirt nap by this Wednesday.

In order to reinforce my point, let me give you some examples of actual lies.

"I didn't have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky." Sorry, Monica doesn't appear to be skilled enough to induce long-term memory loss in the objects of her oral affections. That statement was known to be true to the utterer at the time of the utterance. A lie.

"I don't have those Rose Law Firm billing records." Yeah, right. Then those records turn up in her office with her fingerprints and handwriting all over them. A deliberate lie, known to be untrue when said.

Lesson over.

WHEN WILL AFFIRMATIVE ACTION END

Short answer .. never. That federally sanctioned program of systematic racial discrimination can never end. The very presence of affirmative action is all that will ever be necessary to insure that affirmative action will never go away.

Follow my reasoning here; I suspect you will agree.

One of the Supreme Court Justices who dissented from the decision to legitimize affirmative action was Clarence Thomas. Clarence Thomas is himself a beneficiary of affirmative action. He gained admission to law school on the basis of an affirmative action admissions program. Many of you may not realize this, but the rules of political correctness dictate that a person who benefits from an affirmative admission to a law school shall not then be permitted to learn enough about to law to come to the realization that affirmative action violates the basic equal protection foundations of our Constitution. Once you have embraced the benefits of racial discrimination you are not permitted to discover that racial discrimination is bad.

So .. follow me here. As long as there is a black Justice on the Supreme Court there will be a supposition that this black Justice received an affirmative action admission to law school. This will preclude that black Justice from ever ruling that affirmative action is unconstitutional.

Here's another interesting oddity from last week's absurd ruling. Justice O'Connor opined that affirmative action might have a remaining shelf life of about 25 years. Now there's a new and novel idea for you. We now have some judicial precedent for the idea that, while a particular law might be perfectly constitutional right now, the mere passage of time will render that law unconstitutional. Wouldn't you just live to hear that concept explained by some Harvard law professor?

NOW I'M SUPPOSED TO HAVE DELIVERED THE SPEECH AT VIRGINIA TECH!

Here is the latest e-mail text that is circulating the Internet ... along with my Commencement Speech.

This is long, but worth reading. I have no idea who Neal Boortz is. I have four points to make: 1. I don't know how many of you this speech will offend... or how many it will please... , I just know it will not be unanimous either way. 2. I surely don't agree with all that he said. 3. He made one hell of a speech to the graduating class at Va. Tech and I bet the students will long remember what he said. 4. The University Dean or President was very brave to have invited Neal Boortz to speak.Enjoy

No idea who Neal Boortz is? Just damn.

Once again: Yes, I wrote the speech. It's about five years old. It appeared in the original version of my book "The Terrible Truth About Liberals." No ... I have never delivered this speech to a student body at any college or university. In fact, the speech was written as a protest to the fact that I have never so much as been invited to deliver a commencement speech. The outrage! This means that I did not deliver it at either Texas A&M or at Virginia Tech. I did deliver the speech on my radio show in this past Spring. It has also been produced as a CD and handed to listeners at various events.

At last count my Commencement Speech appears on no less than 280 web sites, and that number is growing daily. You can read it, print it, download it, forward it, curse it, abuse it, damn it, praise it or merely ignore it at http://www.boortz.com/more/commencement.html

RENAMING ATLANTA'S AIRPORT

Atlanta's Mayor Shirley Franklin is naming a panel to study whether or not the name of former Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield should be removed from Atlanta's airport and the name of another former mayor, Maynard H. Jackson, be added. So ... what is the politically appropriate amount of time that must pass before it becomes appropriate to remind people of the high level of corruption that existed in the Jackson administration during the building of Hartsfield's midfield terminal? Franklin says that the airport was clearly "one thing in the city he loved." Well, why not? His former wife had a concession at the airport - a snack vending business awarded her under Maynard's airport affirmative action contracting program. Then, after he left office, Maynard, who was a millionaire at the time, qualified as a "disadvantaged minority" to get a contract for a nice restaurant on the B Concourse. What's not to love?

Intemperate Thoughts

If it turns out that the Baylor teammates of Patrick Dennehy conspired to murder him, would this be cited as an example of "teamwork?"

George Bush actually seems to be making some headway in a problem that had confounded 60 years of American presidents .. finding a workable peace in the Middle East. Do leftists and Democrats loath this man enough to work behind the scenes to sabotage these efforts?

If you check out Hitlary's "Living History" book on Amazon.com you will notice that the folks at Amazon are offering a package price on The Hildabeast's book with the latest Harry Potter tome. Now this may seem a bit odd to you until you realize, as Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times notes, "Both books involve witchcraft."

I wonder why Home Depot has decided to block access to Nealz Nuze on their corporate computers? Are Home Depot associates spending too much time reading the Nuze, or is there someone in the upper echelons decided that I am an evil, dangerous man. Hey, I'm a stockholder. Maybe I should demand answers!

Have you noticed that to the average Democrat it is absolutely impossible for government to cut spending by one single dollar without starving children and causing old folks to die a grisly death do to the lack of prescription drugs and the low nutritional value of dog food?

GAYS AND LESBIANS A THREAT TO MARRIAGE?

Last week's Supreme Court ruling has many people wailing and gnashing their teeth over the possibility that States will now have to recognize "gay marriages." Read these words for a well-known politician. Then see if you can guess who wrote them. They appeared in a column in Atlanta's Creative Loafing.

The fact of the matter is that gays and lesbians themselves do not threaten the institution of marriage. They should not be blamed or made scapegoats for the weakening of thefundamental institution of marriage.

Men and women, husbands and wives by the millions, who care more for Mercedes-Benzes and four-car garages than for teaching their children values and helping with their homework, have done a fine job of that, thank you. Live-in heterosexual lovers who want the benefits of marriage without the responsibility or the costs, and who have no more regard for the well-being of children of a former marriage than they do for their boyfriend or girlfriend's Weimaraner, have done more to destroy this vital institution than all the gays and lesbians could ever hope to do even if they tried.

The politician? Bob Barr. Surprised?

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Do you think gays and lesbians are threatening the institution of marriage? Read this from Bob Barr. I guarantee that many of you who do read this will change what you thought of this man. Hats off to Bob.

No media bias? Yeah, right. That absurd idea doesn't get by Thomas Sowell.

This country is going to earth-shaking political transformation when black Americans finally come to recognize the damage that liberals and the Democratic Party have done to their culture.

Is there any way to stop the government "educators" from dumbing down our textbooks?
