THIS TIME I'LL WARN YOU.

There will be no update to Nealz Nuze for July 4th. Unless, that is, something quite strange happens. Demi Moore chasing me down and jumping my bones in Concourse C at Hartsfield International Airport, for instance.

YOU JUST HAVE YOURSELF A WONDERFUL FOURTH OF JULY

Oh wow. It's the Fourth of July. Independence Day. Fireworks, ball games, picnics, parades, fun at the beach.

Those who have been listening to my show for any length of time at all know that I get somewhat surely (OK ... even more surely) around this time of the year. Why? Because I get just a bit weary of watching myrmidons wave flags and mouth phrases of love for freedom and independence while, in reality, it may well be the last thing they want in their lives.

We live in an entitlement era. It seems as if everyone has a long list of things to which they are entitled. Americans think they have a "right" to a job, a place to live, a living wage (whatever that is), and to be free from having to endure anything that might offend their delicate sensitivities. And this "independence" thing? That's the last thing that many, even most Americans want. We're building a dependency culture, not an independent one!

Look .. I don't want to dwell on this and ruin your holiday; and believe me, if I spent a few thousand words here documenting how the average American has abandoned the idea of freedom and self reliance your Fourth would be ruined. Let me just ask you if you will do something. I want you to write a letter to your congressman and your senators. I want you to tell them that you really got to thinking while watching people working on their melanomas on the beech, and you want the government to do something for you. You want the government to cut you loose.

Tell your congressman that you want to be free to establish your own relationship with your employer. No minimum wages. No mandated benefits. You want to negotiate your own employment contract with your employer, and the only thing you want the government to do is to help you enforce it through the courts if your boss starts screwing around.

Tell your elected officials that you do not believe that you have a right to health care. Tell them that you do not wish to use the police power of government to force someone else to provide you with medications or medical services. Write that you are perfectly willing to assume the total and complete responsibility for acquiring your own health insurance, all you want them to do is eliminate the mandates and allow you to shop for just the coverage you desire. Be sure to add that in the event you get sick without insurance, or you can't cover the costs, you absolutely do not want the government to step in and spend one dime of someone else's money on your care.

Tell them that you want an end to Social Security. You want out. You will be responsible for setting up your retirement plan and you will be willing to suffer the consequences in old age if you fail to do so. Tell your representatives that in a free society the government shouldn't take money from people who are now working just to give it to people who are not.

Maybe you will want to tell your senators and congressman that you have no interest what other people do in the privacy of their own homes. You don't want any laws that regulate their sexual conduct, and you don't want them punished if they sit out in the back yard under the stars at night puffing on some marijuana.

Inform your representatives that you want to be free to make your own consumer choices, and that includes choices of which professional you want to use for medical and legal services. Tell them that you are perfectly willing to rely on your own judgment, or the judgment of private accrediting agencies when it comes to selecting an attorney or a doctor. You might add that you don't like the idea that you have to go to the government to ask who may and who may not clip your fingernails.

When you have written that letter ... then you can go out and proclaim your love of freedom.

IN THE CROSSHAIRS

Around 6% of American taxpayers report earnings above the Social Security tax threshold. No Social Security Taxes are withheld from the paychecks of these people once they've earned, and paid Social Security taxes on $87,000. Just a few years ago, in 1999, that threshold was $72,600. As you can see, it's going up - up by 20% in just the past four years! Next year the wage cap will be $88,200. That's another 1.4% increase. You know why, don't you? That's because you are where the money is, that's why.

Just a warning: You see that percentage figure up there, don't you? Let's just call it 6%, though it's probably a bit less. You, my friends, are in the crosshairs. Politicians from both sides of the aisle are licking their chops at the prospect of tapping into more of your earnings to shore up this hideously flawed income redistribution system. In fact, there are some politicians, principally Democrats, who favor the removal of a wage cap entirely! They want you to pay Social Security taxes on every penny you earn, just as you currently do for Medicare taxes.

Here's a question and answer I pulled from the network-democracy.org website.
27.3 If the cap is removed, and we decreased the contribution rate, would that help maintain the Social Security system?

If both actions were taken, the financial status of the system would not be greatly affected. However, if only the cap were removed, the financial status would be significantly improved.

There you go ... remove the wage cap and "the financial status (of Social Security) would be significantly improved.

In 1999 the website of the primary government employee's union (www.afscme.org) contained the following suggestion for shoring up Social Security finances. "One good idea would be to raise the cap on wages that are subject to the Social Security payroll tax." Easy for a government employee union to say, isn't it. Just how many of their union members would this affect? Oh yeah. It's so easy to call for taxes increases on people other than yourself.

Just a warning, folks. Social Security is la grand fromage of vote-buying programs for politicians. But, the system is going bankrupt. One solution is privatization. People with their own private accounts, however, start developing a dangerous sense of independence - dangerous to politicians. The other solution? Nail the small minority of taxpayers who pay the maximum. Get them for more. In fact, if you REALLY want to fix social security, just remove the wage cap altogether. After all, it's not as if those rich people actually needed all that money.

PUT A FEW OF THESE JERKS IN JAIL ... FOR A LONG TIME

There's a warning out there that a group of computer hackers is going to have a bit of a contest. They're going to try to hack into about 6,000 web sites in six hours on Sunday. Golly, what fun.

OK ... so ten years ago we had barely heard of the Internet. Today it is an essential part of U.S. commerce. Law firms are sending pleadings and other documents back and forth via e-mail and virtual private Internet networks. Tens of thousands of businesses are taking orders and shipping products through Internet commerce. Airlines are depending on Internet bookings for a significant part of their revenue.

The Internet is now a commerce highway. Attempting to hack into websites and slow down the Internet is tantamount to obstructing traffic or breaking and entering into a business. These people need to caught, when possible, and punished when caught. Not with probation. Not with community service. Not with paltry fines. Put the SOBs in jail ... for a while. Not six month ... more like six years. Put the fear of God into the very souls of these geek-bastards. They think they're oh so clever. Put them away with the rest of the prison population where they can share their childish cleverness with Bruno and the boys.

I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOWARD DEAN

Super-leftist Howard Dean, the current Democratic frontrunner, wants Bush to send a few thousand troops to Liberal to "head off a human right's crisis." Dean, you will remember, was steadfastly opposed to our war in Iraq. He's all for sending troops to be in harm's way in Liberia because, he says, "The situation in Liberia is significantly different from the situation in Iraq." Bush, he says, never made the case that Iraq posed a threat to the world. This would mean that Dean believes that Liberia does pose such a threat.

OK ... so let's look at this a moment.

Chemical weapons? Saddam Hussein had used them; Charles Taylor (the president of Liberia) has not.

Biological weapons? Saddam Hussein said he had them, Charles Taylor has not.

Nuclear weapons? Saddam's own scientists have said that he had an ongoing nuclear program, and parts essential to such a program have been discovered in Iraq. Liberia? Nothing.

Bloodshed? Saddam is probably ahead here. Mass graves in Iraq, and tens of thousands of Kurds and Iranians dead from Saddam's chemical weapons. Taylor? Undoubtedly he's killed many ... but the count is nowhere near that of Saddam's

Terrorists? There is proof that Saddam has supported terrorism financially. No such proof exists for Charles Taylor.

Dean says U.S. troops should go to Liberia because there is an "imminent threat of serious human catastrophe." And there wasn't in Iraq. Again, the mass graves, the torture chambers, and the development of those weapons?

Dean also says "the world community is asking the United States to exercise its leadership." Oh, I get it. The U.S. can't send troops to protect it's own interests, but it's OK to send them when the world community demands it.

I just can't wait for this clown to get the Democratic nomination.

SOME RECENT E-MAIL COMMENTS ABOUT NEAL BOORTZ

Since we get over 1000 e-mails a day, we have no choice but to have the immense Boortz staff screen the postings and forward a selection on to me. I'm told they pulled these excerpts from the mail over the past few weeks ... and saved them just for me! Aren't they special?

"You should not be allowed to breed."

"You are really not much of a has-been, as you are a definite won't be.

""You would be out of your depth in a parking lot puddle."

"You set constant low personal standards and then consistently fail to achieve them."

"You should go far, and the sooner you starts the better."

"Neal is a gross ignoramus --- 144 times worse than an ordinary ignoramus."

"I would like to go hunting with you sometime."

"You've been working with glue too much."

"When your IQ reaches 50, you should sell."

"If you see two people talking and one looks bored, Neal's the other one.

"That idiot has two brains, one is lost and the other is out looking for it"

"If Boortz were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week."

"It's hard to believe he beat out 1,000,000 other sperm."

"Some drink from the fountain of knowledge; he only gargled."

A LITTLE ON FLYING ...

This came to me in one of my e-mail general aviation newsletters today:

A pilot who said he ran out of fuel while circling outside the Washington D.C. ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) waiting for traffic controllers to find his flight plan and clear him to enter, crashed four miles short of the runway on Sunday. The pilot and his two passengers suffered minor injuries. The Cessna 172 went down near Baltimore's Martin State Airport shortly after noon, according to the FAA. "The controller told me they couldn't find me in the system," pilot Dale Roger told the Baltimore Sun, and he kept circling for about an hour, waiting for an OK to enter the ADIZ so he could land at Martin Airport.

OK ... so a pilot ran into a bit of a problem with controllers. They couldn't find his flight plan and he wasn't allowed into the precious D.C. airspace. This mishap is not, though, the fault of the FAA or the controllers. The blame rests solely with the pilot. No matter what's going on with any other aspect of flight, you keep tabs on how much fuel you have in your tanks. When the fuel runs low you find the nearest airport and land - you don't sit there arguing with controllers about entering a restricted airspace. You folks just wouldn't believe how many little airplanes fall from the sky because they ran out of gas. But, hey ... it's happened to commercial airliners too.

The Airplane Owners and Pilots Association is going to file a freedom of information request for the tapes of the conversations between controllers and the pilot. Ought to be interesting.

DID YOU MISS THIS YESTERDAY:

Yesterday in my reading assignments I tried to direct you to a column by Walter Williams. He said that the Supreme Court's endorsement of affirmative action would end up hurting young blacks. Since I know you didn't read it, here's an excerpt:

"The bottom line is given the day-to-day destruction of education for black students at the primary and secondary levels of schooling, most will never be able to compete academically. The fact that the affirmative action crowd demands discriminatory admission practices for post-graduate education such as in law and medical schools confirms something else. Black performance on admittance exams, such as the LSAT, MCAT and GRE, is stark testament that four years of undergraduate education cannot erase the damage of 12 years of fraudulent primary and secondary education."

OK .. so here's the link again. Maybe your interest has been piqued.

MY GUESS? IT'S A DONE DEAL

The momentum is gathering to change the name of Hartsfield International Airport. The Atlanta political power structure wants the name of former Mayor Maynard Jackson to either replace the name of former Mayor William B. Hartsfield, or to be added to it.

I sense a paralysis in the business community. Nobody seems to want to come forward to remind us of the level of corruption that surrounded Jackson's oversight of the construction of the midfield Hartsfield terminal. Jackson's handpicked aviation commissioner was convicted and jailed for accepting bribes. Jackson later used the affirmative action program for disadvantaged minorities he set up to get a TGI Friday's restaurant in a prominent location at the airport; a millionaire using a program to assist disadvantaged minorities ... some legacy.

I sense a done deal here. The renaming effort is on a fast track with the Atlanta City Council. A vote to rename the airport will be taken in less than three weeks. Meanwhile --- opponents of the move cower in fear. After all, doesn't everyone know that to say anything negative about Maynard Jackson, or the renaming of the airport, would be ... Racist!

READING ASSIGNMENTS

I'm putting this here again. It's P.J. O'Rourke's review of Hitlary's book. Some of you slackers didn't read it yesterday. Do it now.

Liberals are alarmed ... really alarmed ... by the increased visibility of Ann Coulter. As a matter of fact, she's even making some conservatives a little antsy. I wonder if she likes making people antsy as much as I do? Read this:

I know that many of us are fed up with the flood of illegal immigrants into this country. Especially vexing is the fact that many of these immigrants refuse to make any attempt to assimilate into American society. Here's an essay on what our founders knew to be the importance of free immigration. It might have some lessons for us today.

Have you been following this? Democrat Senator and presidential wannabe John Edwards has been blocking a bill that would ease student loan burdens for soldiers fighting overseas. Why? Some say its because he wanted to make a grand show of tacking on some sort of an amendment that would have increased the benefits and would have brought copious amounts of publicity for the candidate.
