I JUST LOVE THIS GUY P.J. O'Rourke. One of a kind. This quote is from his review of Hitlary's "Living History" book. If I could write like this you wouldn't be listening to me on the radio today. "...[I]t says something unflattering about our era that prominent political figures -- who used to write declarations of independence, preambles to constitutions, Gettysburg addresses, and such -- now use the alphabet only to make primitive artifacts, like the letter-inscribed tablet that Charlemagne is said to have put under his pillow each night, in the hope he'd wake up literate. Conservatives, including most of the Founding Fathers, have always worried that the price of a democratic system would be a mediocre nation. But George Washington and William F. Buckley Jr. put together could not have foreseen, in their gloomiest moments, the rise of Clinton-style ber-mediocrity -- with its soaring commonplaces, its pumped trifling, its platinum-grade triviality. The Alpha-dork husband, the super-twerp wife, and the hyper-wonk vice president -- together with all their mega-weenie water carriers, such as vicious pit gerbil George Stephanopoulos and Eastern diamondback rattleworm Sidney Blumenthal -- spent eight years trying to make America nothing to brag about. They failed. And that is, ultimately, what makes 'Living History' such a good nonread. If they're going to throw the book at us, and the book is by Hillary, the republic will endure (and the Republicans will prevail)." --P.J. O'Rourke LET'S KEEP DUMBING DOWN EDUCATION They've been having a bit of a problem in New York. It seems that New York government school students can't pass that pesky math competency test. Now they've killed the messenger. The state's testing director has lost her job. Now that makes sense, doesn't it? Here's what an unnamed spokesman for New York education authorities had to say. 'Clearly, it is a disservice to public schools to give tests whose results imply students aren't learning essential skills. Now that the state's testing director is gone, we can offer an exam that more accurately reflects what students are really learning." The problem is this current test does accurately reflect what the students are learning. Little .. maybe nothing. The solution for government schools? When students can't pass the test, fire the person responsible for the test and then make them easier. As stupid as parents are these days, they'll certainly buy it. HERE I GO ... SELF DESTRUCTING AGAIN Get ready .. here goes Boortz once again ranting and raving against the "I hate homosexuals" crowd out there. This means, of course, that over the next few days I will receive a few hundred "I'm never going to listen to you again" e-mails. The news broke yesterday afternoon about a certain radio talk show host with both a radio and a television show. Well ... now he has a radio show only. The cable television network, MSNBC, fired Michael Savage today after certain comments he made on his show. As best I can piece things together, a gay man managed to get a phone call through to Savage on the air. The caller said something that had to be cut off the air, and the following conversation ensued: "So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" "Yes, I am." "Oh, you're one of the sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it." In the background you could hear some MSNBC studio technicians groaning. As the MSNBC spokesman said, the decision to fire Savage was "an easy one." Savage issued an apology (of sorts) on his radio show last night. He said that the comment was not meant to be aired. Sorry ... that's hard to buy. I've seen the clip, and I have a bit of experience with broadcasting. There is absolutely no way in the world that Savage didn't know this comment was going out over the air. If the comment wasn't meant for the air, perhaps he can explain why he then asked for another caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bath house and is angry with me." What is it about gay men that drive so many of you bat guano crazy? Why in the world would any moderately sane individual say on network television "you should only get AIDS and die, you pig"? I'm no psychologist, but my educated guess is that a statement such as this could only come from someone with a pathological fear of homosexuals. Why else would you harbor such hate for someone who will have minimal effect on your life? Why bring this up? Why slam a fellow talk show host? Savage is a conservative. His remarks are going to be used by leftists, socialists, fascists, Democrats and the rest of the list of people who hate talk radio to paint all conservative (and libertarian) talk show hosts with the same broad brush. To many, Savage's remarks become the remarks of all conservative talk show hosts. I want my disgust and disagreement to be a matter of record. By the way ... something for you folks who think this lifestyle is "chosen." You actually think that some man out there would make a conscious decision to choose a sexual life with other men instead of a woman? Why would he do this? Is he going to make that choice so that he can be subjected to this level of hatred and viciousness? I have a friend of 30 years, a gay man, who is laying in a Hospice right now. He's dying. Brain tumor. Every day his room sees a constant stream of visitors from his community, most of them straight. Bankers, real estate developers, business owners, housewives, policemen and college professors --- they all come by to share another moment with this man they came to love and admire. This man is one of my heroes. For over sixty years he has endured this blind, raging hatred with no outward signs of bitterness or resentment and still found a way to make so many people love him unconditionally. If only I were that strong. NOW ... IN ALL FAIRNESS (For which I am widely known) The following statement appeared on Michael Savage's website today. We'll just let Michael Savage have the last word: "What happened on the air is much different than what is being reported. It was in the middle of an airline horror story segment with a great set (see photos above). Out of nowhere a crank caller from a competitive talk show went from describing his airline horror story to making vicious personal attacks against me. I signaled and thought that this crank caller was cut from the air. His insults continued in my ear piece and I reacted to him personally as an individual who was attacking me to defend myself. "Unfortunately, my personal comments to this crank caller were broadcast. In no way did my comments reflect my views of disease and suffering in any way. I have spent my entire life in the field of alternative medicine trying to heal the world and bring comfort to the sick. If my comments brought pain to anyone I certainly did not intend for this to happen and apologize for any such reaction. "Let me repeat, this was an interchange between me personally and a mean spirited vicious setup caller which I thought was taking place off the air. It was not meant to reflect my views of the terrible tragedy and suffering associated with AIDS. I especially appeal to my many listeners in the gay community to accept my apologies for any inadvertent insults which may have occurred." HILLARY'S TUNE HAS CHANGED .. JUST A LITTLE BIT Hillary Clinton has been saying that she won't run for president in 2004. I've been telling you to ignore her because she lies. Every statement that comes out of that woman's mouth is designed for maximum political value. Truth means nothing. Now Hitlary is changing her tune .. .but just a little bit. NewsMax is reporting the details of a conversation between The Hildabeast and the hosts of a BBC television show in London. She was asked if she might challenge Bush next year. Her response was not in the negative. She just said "You never know what might happen." Sorry .. but when it comes to Hillary we do know what might happen. Hillary will lie. Another BBC interviewer complained to Hitlary that her common answer to the "are you going to run for president" question was that she had "no intention" of running. The interviewer said that this answer "doesn't really rule anything out, does it?" Hillary responded "Well, but it is as close as I can come." Brace yourselves. This could be a really fun election year. MORE ON THE MAGIC OF TAX WITHHOLDING As I told you last week, we are now celebrating the 60thanniversary of income tax withholding in America. An Idaho researcher named Charlotte Twight, an economic professor at Boise State University, has written extensively about tax withholding. She says that Americans were duped. "Government officials found out this kind of thing works because it reduces people's perception of how much tax they're paying. If you're a government official you're going to be able to collect more money if people have less perception that it's being taken from them." How right she is. Libertarian Fox News columnists Radley Balko writes that withholding has changed the way people view taxes. The federal government withholds. Local governments send taxpayers a bill and disclose how the money is being spent. So, at the local level, tax day is a day when people actually evaluate how their politicians are doing at spending their money. At the federal level people are focused on how much money they're going to get back. . Withholding is probably the one program that bears the greatest responsibility for the ungodly growth in our imperial federal government. KOBE BRYANT The benefit of the doubt here goes to Kobe. I've represented athletes during my life as a lawyer. There are predators out there .. predators with big breasts and silky hair. They hunt athletes. Athletes make a delicious meal to for the Flatbellius Bigboobus Americanis. Athletes have a lot of money and a reputation to protect. They also spend a good amount of time letting their little heads do the thinking. Oh, what a happy hunting ground. Bryant's reputation is immaculate. The rebuttable presumption here is that he the hunted rather than the hunter. READING ASSIGNMENTS Sometimes capitalists are capitalism's worst enemies. Bruce Bartlett writes: A good example of how businesses manipulate government for their own benefit is the prescription drug subsidy bill now before Congress. Although marketed as a benefit for seniors, the true beneficiaries are big businesses that would be able to greatly reduce the cost of their retiree health programs. " Now .. you need to read the rest of the column. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/brucebartlett/bb20030708.shtml Drug companies are working - driven by the wonderful (I'm being serious here) profit motive - to create wonderful life saving drugs. I still remember a wonderful young lady I represented once in a medical malpractice suit. She had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I pray that she and her family are doing well today. Now some drug company has developed a drug to treat this hideous disease. In the meantime, politicians are waging war on the drug companies ... generally for their personal gain. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/dougbandow/db20030707.shtml Yesterday on the show you heard about some writings called the "Anti-Federalist Papers. I certainly intend to peruse them, perhaps you would like to also. Here's your link. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/1389/antifeds/antifed.html Monday's Best of the Web. http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=110003715 There are, thankfully, still a good number of Americans out there who are interested in freedom. For these people the Fourth of July was more than a day off. If the subject is still on your mind you can read this from Jack Kemp. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/jackkemp/jk20030707.shtml Yeah .. that airport security screening really makes me feel so much safer, especially after the FBI released this list of about 90 weapons that could go right through the screening process. http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=33457 Now we have the head of the biggie teacher's union admitting that the union is left-wing and 90% pro-Democrat. Now they're reaching out to Republicans. Might as well try to go where the power is. http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030708-121751-6745r.htm Now we're considering troops for Liberia? Howard Dean wants us to believe that the situation in Liberia is more threatening to world stability than was Iraq. And this man wants to be president? http://www.washtimes.com/commentary/20030707-090427-7803r.htm Oh boy. The fertilizer is going to hit the fan now. The Bush administration is considering the idea of a new bunker-buster weapon ... and this one will be a nuke! http://www.townhall.com/columnists/richlowry/rl20030708.shtml Oh what fun. Twenty-three things you always wanted to know about numbers. Come on, expand your knowledge a bit. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/focus/story/0,6903,992216,00.html Are you as impressed as I am with this color coding terrorism alert system? The Libertarian Party wants it scrapped. http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=33453 Lawrence Kaplan writes that our wonderful friends the Democrats have finally found their unifying voice on matters of national security. That voice is the resurrection of George McGovern. http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110003717 Matt Towery, who writes columns analyzing polls, is insisting that there is a one-in-three chance that Hillary Clinton may be elected president of the United States in 2008. I equate that with reading that there is a 33% that my eyebrows are going to fall out and roll across the floor, there to be eaten by rats. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/matttowery/mt20030708.shtml |
