There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him.   -- Robert Heinlein

FOR THE RECORD

What looked like a sure thing three months ago is starting to look a bit shaky.  I'm talking about Bush's reelection next year.  I'm no expert at counting votes, but my gut tells me that Bush and the Republicans are in trouble next year.  He's generally lost my support through is big spending policies.  The government is simply growing much too fast under George Bush to suit my libertarian tastes.  And we're not just talking defense growth here either.

My prediction ... if this slippage continues look for Hitlary in the 2004 race.  This is going to be fun.

AND WHAT ABOUT OUR CONSTITUTION?

A judge has forbidden the media from identifying the accuser in the Bryant case.  The judge's order warns the media that if they do identify the accuser they will be denied access to the trial plus "other sanctions."

It's beginning to look like this girl comes from a family with some clout in Eagle County, Colorado.  Her parents manage to get the records sealed after a 911 call and a possible drug overdose, now they've managed to get the First Amendment to the Constitution set aside.

The accuser is an adult.  A legal adult, not a child.  Our Constitution gives the accused the legal right to face the accuser.  Is this judge going to try to void that Constitutional protection also?

It's one thing to forbid the parties and their lawyers from discussing a case  with the media .. it's quite another to forbid the media from reporting what it has knows.  Canadian law allows judges to tell the media what it can and what it cannot report regarding court actions.  The same First Amendment protections just don't apply north of the border.  Now we're going to bring those same First Amendment restrictions down here?

KEEPING THE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP ALIVE

The Hope Scholarship is funded by Georgia's lottery.  Simply put, if you maintain a B average in high school you will be eligible for a Hope Scholarship which will pay your tuition, fees and books at a Georgia college or university.  At a private college the student gets a cash grant of just over $4,000.

We are quickly reaching the point where lottery revenues will not be sufficient to fully fund the Hope Scholarships for all eligible students.  And why not?  Because there are too many eligible students, that's why.

And just why are there too many eligible students?  Two words:  Grade inflation.  Teachers in government high schools in Georgia hand out "As and Bs" like they were candy.  Students who are functionally illiterate somehow manage to graduate with their precious "B" average and their scholarship in tact. They then go off to a glorious career of remedial courses at some Georgia college.

There's a new state commission meeting in Atlanta today to try to figure out a way to keep this program afloat.  I'll save them the time.  Attack grade inflation.  Make it clear that these students have to actually earn those B averages.  This will cut the number of students eligible for the scholarships ... and the problem is solved.

Yeah ... that idea ought to really float.

DEMOCRATS CONTINUE FILIBUSTERS

Time to remind you again that over the years most great leftist victories have been won in our courts, not in the halls of congress.  This is why Democrats are so determined to make sure that Bush does not get any true conservatives on any major appeals court benches.  Estrada and Owens are being blocked now.  The next victim of Democrat Senate filibusters will be Alabama Attorney General William Pryor.

Personally, I would rather Pryor not be on the federal appeals court bench.  Pryor wholeheartedly believes that government should have the power to use a gun to force a woman to have a baby that she does not want to have.  Having said that, however, I will also say that if the majority of Senators wish to vote to confirm the nomination of William Pryor, then he should be confirmed and seated.  That's what our Constitution says, and that's the way it should work on Capital Hill.

Now you will hear that the Democrats are only doing to the Republicans what the Republicans did to the Democrats when Clinton was in office.  You will hear this, but this is wrong.  Before George Bush there has never been an instance where the minority party in the U.S. Senate filibustered the nomination of a judicial candidate who actually had the votes to win confirmation on the Senate floor.  The Constitution says these people should be seated with a majority of the Senate votes.  The Democrats have changed the Constitution, now instituting a requirement for more than 60% of the votes.

Lesson: Democrats will do ANYTHING, including ignore our Constitution, to reclaim the political power they think should be theirs.

WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR OUR LIBERAL TALK RADIO SHOW

How long has it been now since that wealthy couple in Chicago announced a $10 million grant to create a liberal talk radio network?  Has it been six months yet?  Well, we're waiting.  Come on, Democrats, trot out your shows!  Where's Al Franken?  Where's Jeaneen Garafolo?   Maybe you can get Mike Malloy to ascend to the throne.

Come on guys! If there's such a demand out there for leftist talk radio, you're wasting good money by sitting on your haunches.

DO I HAVE GOOD TIMING, OR WHAT?

Today firefighters are working hard to battle a blaze in Montana's Glacier National Park.  Several weeks ago I cancelled a two-week vacation scheduled for this time.  And just where would I be right about now?  Parked in a Wanderlodge motor home at the Glacier National Park.

France is having a tough time with forest fires .. many of which have been started by arsonists.  Just how long do you think it will be before they find a way to blame this on the United States?

Tony Blankley has a question for Democratic candidates regarding our current situation in Iraq.  He wants to know just which side they're on.

The push to name Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport after Maynard Jackson is getting rough.  Now the proponents are playing the race card.  One black politician says "This really shouldn't be about what the white business establishment would allow."

Some centrist Democrats are warning of the far left tilt of the Democratic party.  They can warn all they want ... but the far left tilt will continue.  This is the way the Democrats have structured their nomination process, and it doesn't look like it will change any time soon.

And this is the way Democrats do business in Texas.  When something comes  before the Texas legislature that they don't like .. and that they don't have the votes to stop ... they just pack their bags and head out of state so that there won't be a quorum and the legislature will be unable to ace.  Question:  What do you think the media would say about this tactic if it were Republicans instead of Democrats?

And since we're talking Democrats today .. have you noticed that quite a few of the Democratic presidential candidates are talking tax increases?  Yes .. but, they're only talking tax increases for upper income, high-achieving Americans ... the folks who aren't likely to vote for Democrats.

More about that Berkeley study on the psychological makeup of a conservative.  Jonah Goldberg says that the study reveals academic bias.  Gee ... you think?

And how about this?  The American Psychological Association has published Berkeley's study on conservatives.  Does this mean that conservatives might be able to claim a disability?  Hey ... why not take this absurd Americans with Disabilities Act and make it work FOR us?

Finally ... the Republicans are fighting back on this global warming nonsense.  It's time for you to realize, my friends, that much of the impetus behind this global warming scam is a desire to cripple capitalism and free enterprise.  Don't you find it a bit odd that so many of the people screaming global warming and promoting the hideous Kyoto Treaty are socialists?

We have an apparent suicide in Belle Glade, Florida.  The NAACP is having none of it.  They're screaming "lynching."  Hey, why pass up a good chance to stir racial feelings, even when the evidence isn't on your side?
