I am led to understand that George Bush was making some of the radio calls when his Navy SB3 approached the USS Abraham Lincoln almost two weeks ago. When an aircraft approaches the carrier for landing the pilot is, as I understand it, supposed to line up some brightly lit balls in a display off to the side of the landing deck. As Navy One was on final approach for trap aboard to the Abraham Lincoln Bush is said to have keyed the mic and say "Lincoln, Navy One, 12,500 lbs, I have the balls." The crowd, as they say, went wild. TAX CUT DEBATE THIS WEEK Democrats are going to fighting like hell to water down the Bush tax cut this week in Congress. They have a very good reason to try to stop the tax cuts. They know that meaningful tax cuts will most likely lead to stronger economic growth .. as they always have in the past. Stronger economic growth means Democratic losses in 2004. Yes .. I firmly believe that Democrats would intentionally sabotage economic recovery for political gain. They truly believe that they have been "chosen" to lead this country into a socialist utopia, and virtually any tactics that would further that goal are permissible. You'll hear a lot about the budget deficit, so I thought I would try to put some things in perspective again. The actual dollar amount of the deficit is not the most important figure. You would be better off considering the size of the deficit as it compares to the size of our economy. Look at it this way. Let's suppose you make out your family budget for the entire year. You are dismayed to see that you are going to come up about $2,000 short. If your family income is $20,000, this is a sizable budget deficit. It's 10% of your annual income. But what if your annual income is $200,000? Then your budget is only 1% of the size of your own personal "economy." It would be a tough job eliminating that deficit if you were only making $20,000 a year. You would have to increase your economic output by 10%? But, if you were making $200,000 a year you would only have to increase your economic output by 1% to wipe out your budget. The proposed current budget deficits stand at just a bit less than 3% of the nation's gross domestic product - the size of our economy. These budget deficits are significantly lower than the deficits predicted by Bill Clinton's White House in 1994 --- just before the Republicans took control of the congress and started turning back Clinton's spending requests. Just thought you would like to know. BOORTZ SHOWS EMPATHY Every morning I see these television advertisements for various "own your own business and get rich" schemes. One of the advertisements features Internet access terminals that you locate in airports, hotel lobbies, shopping centers, etc. another features credit card terminals you would locate at convenience stores and other retail locations. The commercials show happy "businessmen" counting the money. Poor saps. I feel so sorry for the people who get suckered by these commercials and end up investing money in these schemes. It doesn't take long for them to find out that nobody wants those Internet terminals, and nobody wants those credit card terminals at their stores. Think about this. If these gadgets are all that profitable, why aren't these companies just going out there and putting them in place themselves? Don't get suckered. DIFFERENT PRESIDENTS, DIFFERENT THOUGHTS Tom Daschle is an amazing political animal. His political thoughts and philosophy change as the political parties in charge of the White House change. In 1998, when Bill Clinton was disgracing the White House, Daschle was telling the media that we "knew" that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and that it was imperative that the U.S. make certain that Saddam Hussein is disarmed. Daschle's opinions changed with administrations. In 2003, with a Republican in the White House, Daschle was openly questioning whether Saddam had those weapons and fighting against Bush's plans to enforce U.N. Resolution 1441. Daschle is at it again. He's in charge of the current filibustering of two Bush appeals court nominees. Daschle has changed the constitutional standard for confirming a presidential nominee from a majority vote in the Senate to a super-majority vote of 60. But, is this the way Daschle felt when there was a Democrat in the White House? It seems not. In 1995 Daschle was speaking in favor of a proposal by two Democrat Senators, Tom Harkin and Joseph Lieberman, to establish new rules on cloture votes. At that time Daschle said "Democracy means majority rule, not minority gridlock." Will someone in the media please ask Mr. Daschle why he can't seem to make up his mind on these important issues? TERRORIST ATTACKS Islamic terrorists, possibly Al Qaeda, attacked a civilian compound in Saudi Arabia late yesterday. At least 10 Americans were killed. So, there's your reminder. The war against Islamic terrorism is not over. I believe it's only a matter of time before these Islamic fanatics launch an attack inside the United States. Remember ... "terrorists" is only one-half of the description. They are ISLAMIC terrorists. In the meantime, we continue to make the same mistakes in the U.S. that we've been making since 9/11. We send thousands of people into our airports to inconvenience travelers looking for weapons rather than terrorists. Ethnic profiling, arguably the most effective way to identify and stop terrorists, is outlawed. Our borders are still basically open. Containers get unloaded every single day in ports on all coasts without being opened and inspected. INTEMPERATE THOUGHTS STUD ALERT! See this man in the flight suit? Quite a stud, right? Wonder who what is? It must be George Bush. If not him, it's probably some Republican. After all, Democrats don't go in for photo ops like this, do they? It would dishonor our troops, wouldn't it? So, that's probably not Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, is it? Sorry ... but it most certainly is.
Can you imagine anything more disgusting than Hillary Clinton as the Commander in Chief of the U.S. armed forces? I'm so depressed now that I don't think I can go on with the show. Would someone please tell Bill O'Reilly that the capital of Georgia is Atlanta, not Savannah. Thanks. A study in the Middle East says that global warming is greening up the desert. Just damn. Now the eco-radicals are going to have to find something wrong with turning deserts into arable land. READING ASSIGNMENTS Are you wondering why the Democrats are working so hard to prevent George Bush from placing his nominees on the Federal appeals bench? Because they know the stakes, that's why. They know that the furtherance of their leftist agenda depends in large part on judges who will ignore the Constitution. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/billmurchison/bm20030513.shtml And have the Republicans finally figured out that this who judicial confirmation process is a political one? Are the Republicans going to continue to be lay-downs? Will the Democrats succeed without paying a political price? http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110003487 Monday's Best of the Web. http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=110003484 Maybe it's time to turn the thumb screws on Iran a bit. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/GuestColumns/Brookes20030513.shtml By now most of you have heard of the reporting scandal at The New York Times. A young black journalist was given promotion after promotion even though there was ample evidence that he was irresponsible, at best, and dishonest, at worst. Why wasn't he fired earlier? Could it possibly be because he was black? http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030513-79589492.htm Just how many votes is a picture worth anyway? Democrats are starting to realize the answer, and boy are they ticked off. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A44367-2003May12.html A Republican president flies out to an aircraft carrier that is returning to port and Democrats go nuts. A Democratic president orders an aircraft carrier to put to sea just so that he can fly out to it, land on the deck, and make a speech .. and Democrats seem untroubled. http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2003/5/12/115506 So, you think it might be kind of cool to live in New York City? Read this before you make any more plans. http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/bminiter/?id=110003485 How do you get rid of a budget deficit? Raising taxes won't do it, and there certainly isn't a mood in Washington for cutting spending. The easiest way? Stand back and let the economy grow, the deficit will take care of itself. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/richlowry/rl20030513.shtml Should illegal aliens get drivers licenses? Or should they get a ride ... to the border? http://www.townhall.com/columnists/phyllisschlafly/ps20030513.shtml We're Muslims. We're peaceful. Our's is a religion of peace. If you don't refer to us as peaceful, if you don't acknowledge Islam as a religion of peace, we will kill you. http://www.washtimes.com/national/pruden.htm This is a story about legislation in the congress that would make it easier for smaller employers to make health insurance coverage available to their employees. The measure is being fought by (guess who?) leftist Democrats in the Senate. And why? Because these proponents of socialized medicine don't want it to be any easier for you to get health insurance through your employer. http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20030513-43733062.htm John Lott weighs in on the renewal of the federal ban on so-called "assault weapons." As usual, logic doesn't work for the gun control crowd. But, what the hell? They always have emotion on their side. http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20030513-22396932.htm This won't make the left happy, but six federal appeals court judges have stated their belief that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals the right to own guns. http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030513-585679.htm |
