We have a fun story going on in the Atlanta suburb of Avondale Estates. It's a story that will resonate for those of you who live under the tyranny of condo homeowner's associations or local historic development commissions. Avondale has a historic development commission; a collection of private citizens/petty bureaucrats who wield incredible power over what you can and can't do with your property. One homeowner wanted to add a rounded stoop to the front door of his home. The commission said no. To defy the commission this homeowner has painted his home green with purple polka dots. Now other homeowners in Avondale are following suit. Polka dots are popping out all over. I include this in the Nuze today to bring home to the millions of people across the nation who are living and suffering under the thumb of homeowners associations and development commissions. People standing up for their property rights: gotta love it. OK, SO YOU DON'T HAVE ANY INSURANCE Tornados and floods .. and people without homeowners or business insurance. There was George Bush in the Midwest yesterday telling the media that something needed to be done to help the victims of these disasters who didn't have insurance. Why? It is clearly irresponsible for someone to fail to insure their home and their possessions against loss. Why, then, should I have to suffer the consequences of that irresponsibility? Bush is clearly talking about some sort of federal aid to these people. That federal aid will be paid with dollars that I earned - dollars that you earned. With the money that was left in our paychecks after these dollars were seized we actually went out and insured our homes, our cars, our boats and the rest of our stuff. Decisions have consequences. If you make the decision to leave your property uninsured the consequences should be that you suffer the losses if that property is destroyed. The wonderful hand of government, however, is changing things. Now you make the decision to leave your property uninsured and other people, taxpayers, have to suffer the consequences. Wouldn't it be nice to hear this exchange with a president? Question: Mr. President, what about the people who lost their homes and didn't have insurance? Answer: Of course we feel badly for them. But they made their decisions, and unfortunately they're now suffering the consequences of those decisions. Surely you don't expect me to use the police power of government to seize someone else's property in order to protect these people from the consequences of their irresponsibility, do you? Yeah ... like that's going to happen. INTERESTING DEMOCRATIC TRICKS Democrats in exile in Texas. Over fifty Democrats, members of the Texas House of Representatives, have fled the state to exile in Oklahoma. And why? Here's the story:
What are we learning here? We're learning that Democrats can be counted on to act like Democrats. To Democrats government power is everything. They believe America is great because of government, and they feel that being in charge of government is tantamount to being in charge of, and responsible for America's greatness. To achieve and to maintain this government power Democrats will do almost anything. If they could have, they would have gladly sacrificed the people of Iraq to Saddam Hussein in order to deny George bush a military victory over a terrorist state. They will eagerly sabotage any economic recovery for this country if they could parlay that bad economic news into an defeat for Republicans in 2004. And, in Texas, they will stomp their feet, cry and run to Oklahoma if they can't have their way in congressional redistricting. Sad and pathetic. ![]() THE NEW YORK TIMES This is what happens when you put so much emphasis on a person's group identity rather than their individual character and ability. In a sense the New York Times has become a victim of the war on individuality. In case you don't know the story, the Times hired a young reporter named Jayson Blair. Jayson was trouble. He made constant mistakes, plagiarized and just flat-out lied. During all this time Blair was repeatedly promoted although many colleagues were ringing the warning bells --- loudly. Over two years ago one NYT editor wrote upper management saying "We have to stop Jayson from writing for the Times. Right now." Now Blair has been forced to resign, and this past Sunday The Times published a 7000-word mea culpa. A lot of people suspect that Jayson Blair lasted as long as he did for one reason ... he is black. Affirmative action run wild? Diversity coming home to roost? I'm attaching a few links for you today so you can read what a variety of people have to say about this mess. WSB also happens to be the flagship station for the Atlanta Braves, so we're justifiably proud of "our" team. After last night's 3-1 victory over the L.A. Dodgers the braves are 23-4 for their last 27 games. So, how good is that? The last time the Braves had a 23-4 streak was in 1954, Hank Aaron's first year in a Braves uniform; aMilwaukeeBraves uniform.
