So, where do we stand in the tax cut maneuverings in Washington? Bush wants a tax cut on his desk by Memorial Day. Dividend Tax. Bush has told his allies on Capitol Hill to go for a cut in the tax rate on both dividends and capital gains to 15%. When would you see an adjustment on your paychecks? July 1 - if our esteemed elected officials do their job this week. It may all come down to one U.S. Senator, Democrat Evan Byah of Indiana. And what about your own particular tax rate? This has been one of the hardest things to find in articles covering this story. So, I'm including a chart that will show you what will happen to your particular tax rate.
Under the Bush Plan you would move into the highest tax bracket as a single person or as a married person filing jointly when you earn $311,950. ANOTHER REASON TO END THE DRUG WAR There seems to be some evidence that North Korea's lead gargoyle, Kim Jong Il, may be in the drug trade. They found a North Korean ship loaded with a huge cache of heroin last month in Australia. The fear is that North Korea may be selling hard drugs to get money for their nuclear program. This only works because drugs bring such high profits - profits in the range of 10,000% and more. And drugs only bring these huge profits because they areillegal! If you even the slightest hint of an open mind, you know what the solution is here. HEIGHTENED ALERT Here we go again .. Code Orange. Our Homeland Security folks tell us that there are specific concerns about the use of explosives in a car or a truck. Car bombs, truck bombs. So ... let's take a look at some of the measures that will be put into effect. Now you can't park within 300 feet of an airline terminal. There are many more buildings in the US that house far more people than your typical airline terminal, and you can certainly park within 300 feet of them ... but not the airline terminals. They will be conducting random searches of cars and trucks approaching airports. There will be no random searches of cars and trucks passing through major downtown intersections between four skyscraper office buildings which may hold over 80,000 people. In fact, there are no announced restrictions on where trucks can travel during this heightened alert ... but they have added additional restrictions on where airplanes can fly. A rental truck will be allowed to drive unimpeded right down the street within 100 to a major stadium holding 60,000 people watching a ball game, but an airplane will not be allowed to fly over that stadium. The threat is coming from Arabs .. Islamic Arabs. Airport security screeners and other security personnel will not be allowed to single out people of Middle Eastern appearance for special attention. Airport security screeners will continue to look for weapons and explosives, not terrorists. The world champs at handling these types of security concerns, the Israelis, look for terrorists, not weapons. In other words --- government will continue to conduct itself with the same exemplary wisdom and logic that we've come to know and love over the decades. MORE ON HOW GOVERNMENT WORKS. Yesterday I told you that 13,000 Florida high school seniors have failed the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). This means that they won't receive their high school diplomas. Today ... some additional notes on the FCAT scenario you might find interesting.
Watch this story. It's going to get hotter the closer we get to graduation. GIVE HALEY BARBOUR A TALK SHOW I must have missed this flap last week, but here's a shout out to Haley .. we're proud of you pal! It seems that Barbour is running for governor of Mississippi. At a recent campaign appearance Barbour was talking about Head Start. The conversation naturally turned to the parents (largely unqualified) of the children in these Head Start programs. Barbour said that some Head Start children would be better off "sitting up on a piano bench at a whorehouse" than in their own homes. Now don't we all know that this is the truth? There are millions of children in this country who would be better off living in orphanages than with the pathetic adults they call "mom," and sometimes "dad." To his credit, Barbour is refusing to apologize. It's nice to see someone refuse to apologize for uttering the truth, no matter how much it might hurt. READING ASSIGNMENTS Here you go, Tuesday's Best of the Web. http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=110003519 Orange Alert --- We're spending $5 billion on transportation security, and they can't even keep imposters off international flights. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/michellemalkin/mm20030521.shtml Bruce Bartlett isn't impressed with the upcoming tax cut. He even thinks it could hurt more than it helps. The reason? All of the tax increases that are included in the package. http://www.washtimes.com/commentary/20030520-102259-1861r.htm This is rather interesting, Gore's former campaign manager, Donna Brazile, is telling fellow Democrats that they had better get serious about the defense of our nation or face up to a big loss in 2004. http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110003520 Dopey ideas and expressions: A good read from Walter Williams. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/walterwilliams/ww20030521.shtml Psychologist agrees with Boortz on ADD/ADHD http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/living/health/5881393.htm The proponents of that program of racial discrimination known as affirmative action are getting a bit concerned about the Jayson Blair/New York Times episode. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/jonahgoldberg/jg20030521.shtml Could the recent suicide attacks in Morocco and Saudi Arabia actually be the last gasps of Islamic terrorism? Amir Taheri, the author of The Cauldron - The Middle East Behind the Headlines, seems to think so. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,482-686092,00.html How many times and how many different writers and experts does it take to get this to sink in: The primary problem with government education in this country is the government workers unions that run our schools. Add to the mix, suburban parents. They're part of the problem too. http://www.suntimes.com/output/osullivan/cst-edt-osul20.html George Will says that high noon for "diversity" may be approaching. Oh, we can only wish. Imagine the transformations that will occur in this country when we start identifying people as individuals instead of by their group (usually racial) status. http://www.msnbc.com/news/914599.asp It hasn't been that good of a Spring for The New York Times. One Times reporter was booed off the stage at a commencement address at Rockford College. This story just makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. http://www.rrstar.com/localnews/your_community/rockford/20030520-4814.shtml Cynthia Tucker says it's time for the feds to end their stalking of Bill Campbell. Maybe so, but it's also time for Florida to really look into whether this man is qualified to practice law in that state. http://www.ajc.com/print/content/epaper/editions/wednesday/opinion_e3bc31cb0419b19400a3.html |
