The tendency of democracies is, in all things, to mediocrity, since the tastes, knowledge, and principles of the majority form the tribunal of appeal. -- James Fenimore Cooper

IT'S MEMORIAL DAY --- TIME TO PLAY POLITICS

Well, let's see. It's Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember men and women who have given their lives in service to this country as members of our armed forces. Since we've just been through a war in Iraq the feelings on this particular Memorial Day will be stronger than usual. Americans appreciate their veterans, and Americans have especially strong feelings for those who gave their lives.

So - this is a ripe occasion for politics, and the Democrats are certainly trying to take advantage. The Democrat thought process goes something like this:
  1. Americans love their veterans.

  2. Americans will react harshly against anyone who tries to hurt out veterans.

  3. Democrats can win points by speaking out for veterans.

  4. Democrats can cost the Republicans points if they can paint evil Republicans as being enemies of veterans.

  5. One particularly way to attack Republicans would be to say that the Bush tax cut is taking money away from Veterans.

And so it begins. On this Memorial Day Democrats are trying to spread the word that Republicans are trying cutting spending for veterans programs ... all to pay for Bush's tax cut. It really doesn't matter whether or not there is any truth to this charge ... just make the charge, get the media to report the charge, and hundreds of thousands of Americans will accept it as the truth.

So --- what is the truth? Well, it seems that the 2004 budget for veterans benefits is going up by $6.2 billion. Dollars for veteran's health care are going up by $3.1 billion. The Washington Times reports that funding for veterans health care has gone up by an average of 7.9% per year since 1996. Does that sound like spending cuts to you? There are 25 million veterans in the U.S. If you can convince them that your political enemies are trying to cut spending for their programs you will have a strong claim to their votes --- even if you have to lie to do it.

AND LET'S SAY A LITTLE HELLO TO SOCIALIZED MEDICINE

I've been saying for quite some time now that socialized medicine is an inevitability for the United States now. There is no stopping it. At some point in the not-too-distant future all Americans are going to be dependent on government (and that means dependent on politicians) for their medical care. Once Americans were taught to believe that health care was a "right" the die was cast.

If you want to see the future of health care in the United States just look at the VA hospitals today. In 1996 vote-seeking politicians opened the VA health care system to all veterans .. and doubled the caseload. The cost has become so great that now the Veterans Administration is playing the class warfare game. New enrollments have been suspended for "high-income" veterans. Those "high-income" veterans already in the system are paying higher enrollment fees and high co-payments than the rest. And just what do you get for your money? The Washington Times is reporting that many veterans are waiting up to six months for an appointment to see a doctor.

That, my friends, is your medical future ... and it is your medical future because you have accepted the idea that you have a "right" to medical care, a right that politicians are all-too-willing to recognize.

DALEY'S REAL REASON FOR CLOSING MEIGS

We've heard for quite some time that Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's wife wanted to build a park on the ground occupied by Meigs Field. Now we're hearing that the real reason may have been Daley's plans to build a resort-style casino on that piece of land. Not much of surprise there.

ISRAEL SAYS "OK" TO A PALESTINIAN STATE

So now Israel says that it will accept the existence of a Palestinian state. The bug hurdle here is getting the so-called "Palestinians" and the Arab world to accept the existence of Israel. Someone let me know when that happens.

The Democrats biggest challenge in 2004? Convince Americans that they can handle the security needs of the United States. A tall order.

Oh yeah ... these people are really going to be our friends, aren't they? The leader of Syria is saying that he doesn't even think that Al Qaeda exists. Maybe we had better keep those troops over there for a while longer.

Democrats have discovered that they aren't going to win elections by trumpeting their opposition to gun ownership.

Here we go again with that "weapons of mass destruction" thing.
