VETERAN'S DAY

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.  That's the time we set aside every year to honor veterans who have served this country in our armed forces.  This Veteran's Day comes at a time when our armed forces are fighting what I believe to be World War IV in Iraq and elsewhere.  So many of our soldiers are engaged in this effort that there are scarcely enough to create a presence at the various Veteran's Day celebrations across the country.  Perhaps partisan politics can take a rest long enough today to honor the men and women who have dedicated and sometimes sacrificed their lives to keeping America free and Americans safe.

THE REAL TRUTH OF THE MATTER

You've heard all of those Democrats blaming Bush's tax cuts for the current budget deficit.  They call the tax cuts "massive" and "irresponsible."  Yeah ... these Democrats are the paragons of thrift when it comes to the federal budget, right?  Yeah ... if you believe that you would believe that Ted Kennedy is a great humanitarian.

Just how fiscally responsible are these Democrats?  Well, Fox News is reporting on a study by the National Taxpayers Union.  The study shows that  if you took all of the spending increases proposed by House Democrats over the next ten years they would equal more than Bush's tax cuts for 2003 and 2001 combined!    House Democrats have proposed spending 13 times as much money as Republicans.  Just this year House Democrats have proposed $417 billion dollars in new spending.  House Republicans have proposed only $32 billion.

During the upcoming election year the Democrats are going to be hammering George Bush on the deficit issue.  They will consistently refer to the current deficit as the largest in history.  It is not.  The only rational way to measure a deficit is as a percentage of your total budget.  A $10,000 budget deficit is a huge deal to someone who only makes $40,000 a year.  That same $10,000 deficit is a mere inconvenience to someone who makes two million a year.  Our current budget deficit is nowhere near as large as some previous deficits under Democratic presidents as a percentage of our total budget.

Democrats will also try to blame the budget deficit on Bush's tax cuts.  It has been shown that Bush's tax cuts have actually increased tax revenues paid to the federal government, so how can they be responsible for a deficit?

Just look again at those spending figures.  See who the true big spenders are.  You incur deficits by spending more than you take in.  The truth is in these figures.

Oh, by the way.  I found this story by watching the Fox News Channel.  I didn't see it covered on CNN and a search of the ABC, CBS and NBC websites turns up nothing of this study.  Just more proof of the right-wing bias of Fox, right?

TURNING THE INTERNET OVER TO THE UNITED NATIONS?

Wow!  This one popped up out of nowhere.  I had no idea that there was a movement to turn the management of the Internet over to the UN.  It seems that "developing countries" like Brazil, India, South Africa, China, Saudi Arabia and others want the Internet to be managed by national governments with international control ... United Nations control.

There is going to be a world information summit in Geneva next month.  These countries were going to try to make the Internet management change at that time, but those plans have been shelved ... temporarily.  As some say, however, it's now on the agenda.

Here's how this is going to come down.  The countries that want the Internet managed by the UN are going to plead unfairness in the assignment of Internet names.  That will be the cover under which UN control is sought.  Once these national governments and the UN get their clutches on this wonderful information system can censorship be far behind?

We'll keep an eye on this one.  You should too.

AND AREN'T WE GLAD THIS MAN ISN'T PRESIDENT TODAY!!!!

Al Gore is at it again.  The man who couldn't even carry his own home county in the last presidential election is telling us what President Bush is doing wrong in the war on terror.  In the process he is managing to show his rear end yet again.

Gore was speaking to the extreme left-wing group moveon.org.  Here is part of what he said:

".. and in my opinion it makes no more sense to launch an assault on our civil liberties as a way to get at terrorists than it did to launch an invasion of Iraq as the best way to get at Osama bin Laden.  In both cases the administration has attacked the wrong target."

So, just how easy is it to debunk Gore's utterances?  The first thing you do is look for the premise behind Gore's remarks.  If you can destroy the premise then the remarks based on that premise fail.  The premise of Gore's remarks is that Bush sent the troops into Iraq to "get at Osama bin Laden."  I don't really have to spend too many words here to debunk that premise, do I?  Nobody connected with the Administration, including President Bush, ever said that we were going to Baghdad to get Osama.  We went to Baghdad to change the regime in Iraq.  We went there to get rid of a regime that had ignored 12 years of U.N. resolutions, a regime that had and used chemical and biological weapons, a regime with a nuclear weapons program, a regime that had killed perhaps half a million or more of its own people, and a regime with proven connections and friendships with terrorists and terrorist groups.

YOUR PERIODIC REMINDER OF WHO PAYS WHAT

Just in case you've forgotten, here are some statistics for who paid what taxes in 2001.  The figures for 2002 should be available soon and I'll bet that you'll find even more of the burden on the higher income Americans.  Look at this folks.  The top 25% of income earners in this country are paying 83% of the taxes.  For those of you who went to government schools, that means that the bottom 75% of income earners in America are only paying 17.1% of the income taxes.

Now .. the next time you hear some leftist ranting about "tax cuts for the rich" perhaps you'll see things a bit differently.

 READING ASSIGNMENTS

Have you been wondering what is happening to the people who are carrying out those attacks on American soldiers in Iraq?  Well, here's your answer.

This isn't on the radar screen for many of you, but President Bush continues to be clobbered by the World Trade Organization over his 30% steel tariffs.   This is good.  These protective tariffs cost 200,000 American jobs and $4 billion in lost jobs.  Bush did this to curry favor with unions.  It didn't work.  Time to bail.

OK ... the economy is improving.  Jobs are coming back.  It looks like this good economy thing will continue through the election.  There's also evidence that things are getting better for Bush in Iraq every day.  So ... what are the Democrats going to complain about in the election?  Bruce Bartlett has an idea.

And if Bush doesn't bail on these protectionist policies what will happen?  Well, how about a huge trade war with Europe?

That airplane which got too close to the White House yesterday?  It was a Mooney.  The shame, the shame.  I suppose today we'll have a lot of people talking about the grave threat that these private airplanes present to America

Are the Republicans finally growing a spine?  It looks like they're going to go for a 30-hour marathon Senate session to showcase the Democratic filibusters of Bush's judicial nominees.  Remember, liberals look at the judiciary as their private legislative body, and they're not going to give up control of the judiciary without a brutal fight.  It sure would be nice if Republicans would strike back.

Did you know that it was illegal to advertise baby formula in Norway?

From today's Vent:  "Hey Shirley, if it's Georgia's sewer problem then it's also Georgia's airport."

Question:  If you could switch your home phone number to your mobile phone, would you then drop your land-line service?  It's something to think about.
