TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2003AND JUST WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "PEACE" MY GOOD SIR? George Bush arrives in England today for a visit with Tony Blair. He will be visiting a country where 60% of the people think that Bush is a threat to world peace, 37% of the people think that he is "stupid" and where only 7% consider Bush to be a world leader. First ... this "threat to world peace" thing. Remember, my friends, to always try to discern how people are defining words. When a race warlord uses the term "racist" he does not necessarily mean someone who believes in the inherent genetic superiority of one race of people over another. In most cases the word "racist" is now used to describe anyone who voices any opposition to the personal or political agenda of anyone who calls himself a civil rights leader. "Racist" is also used to describe anyone who believes that the government should be colorblind in all matters relating to the treatment of citizens. During the cold war the Soviet Communists were fond of the "peace" word also. To Soviets "peace" was defined as an absence of opposition to the communist movement. The Soviets and their fellow travelers loudly proclaimed that the USA was a threat to world peace. By their definition they were exactly right. We were, thank god. So, what do these 60% of Brits who think that Bush is a threat to world peace mean by the word? Dictionary.com defines peace as "the absence of war or other hostilities." Well, we are most certainly at war, a war against Islamic terrorism; and it is George Bush who declared that war and it is George Bush who is pursuing it. George Bush has made it clear that as long as he is in the White House he will pursue and attempt to destroy anyone who threatens the safety and security of Americans either in their homeland or abroad. Islamic terrorists have made their pledge to attack, destroy and kill Americans wherever they find them. They have already attacked us on our soil. Bush has responded with war. I guess the bottom line here is that there are times when peace is not the goal, when peace is not the preferred state of affairs. When you have a group of well armed and financed religious fanatics, in many cases state sponsored, threatening to kill as many Americans as they can, you have a need to respond ... with force. It's no time for peace. Peace can return when the threat is ended. You should know, by the way, that The Guardian of London is reporting today that 62% of British citizens think that the United States is a force for good in the world. More details on that poll on the show today. WHAT IF Great Britain is our staunchest ally in the war against terrorism and our action in Iraq. Other countries have offered lesser amounts of help, but at least they're there. In Italy today there will be funeral services for the 15 Italian soldiers who were killed in a terrorist attack in Iraq last week. One of the tactical goal of the terrorists in Iraq right now is to isolate the United States. They attacked the United Nations, and the UN ran. They attacked the International Red Cross, and the Red Cross ran. As of yet the attack on Italian troops last week hasn't caused Italy to bail, though that was the obvious goal of the terrorists. Can you imagine what the situation would be like today if the entire western world had united behind the United States in ridding the world of Saddam Hussein? What if the UN Security Council had unanimously approved military action against Hussein? What if the Germans, Russians and French had sent tens of thousands of combat troops to Iraq to bring a swift end to this conflict? What if the United States and Great Britain didn't appear to stand alone? If these Islamic terrorists knew that they faced a western world united in its determination to crush them; if they knew that they would not be successful in isolating the United States, I imagine things would be a great deal different today. The governments of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Malaysia and other supporters of terrorism would know that the odds against them are formidable, and that they can find no cover or refuge in world opinion. These countries would know it to be in their best interests to discourage if they can, or destroy if they must the terrorist elements inside their borders. Yasser Arafat and his Palestinian goons would know that their survival depends on settling their differences with Israel and an end to their violence. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that if the goal was truly peace the surest way to accomplish that would have been for the western world to act together against Saddam after he ignored 12 years of United Nations resolutions. The true threat to world peace is people who refused to fight when the cause was just; who refused to stand behind the United States in sending a message to the Islamic world that their support of terrorism will bring swift and certain retribution. If pigs could fly. SCOTT PETERSON Do I need to apologize to my listeners for not obsessing over the Scott Peterson case? I'm noticing that some television and radio shows that I depend on for information on issues that can actually affect my life are dedicating immense amounts of time to Scott Peterson and whether or not he killed his wife. For the record, I think he probably did. But there are prosecutors, defense attorneys, a judge and eventually a jury out there who are going to take care of things. Yes .. I want to know what's going on, but I don't need a daily barrage of defense attorneys, prosecutors, forensic pathologists and pundits engaging in seemingly endless discussions of the ups and downs of Peterson's probable cause hearing. Look, folks. This isn't even the trial yet! Can you imagine how bad things are going to get when they actually start selecting a jury? Guess what? This case is not going to change your life one way or the other. It isn't going to put more money in your pocket, nor will it lighten your bank account. There are plenty of people out there right now who are hatching plots and schemes that will have an affect on you and those you love. Wouldn't you like to know what they're up to also? STOP CALLING THEM ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS The congress has passed an energy bill. Environmental groups are calling it a "disaster." Does this mean that it is a disaster for our environment? No, it doesn't mean that at all. What it means is that it is good for capitalism. It's good for the American economy. Remember ... at the end of the cold war, the left, the world socialist movement, had to look for a new home. Socialism and communism were discredited. Capitalism had prevailed. The anti-capitalist crowd was looking for refuge, and they found that refuge in the environmental movement. Even Gorbachev himself now fancies himself to be a world environmental leader. So, when you hear "environmental groups" bleating and whining about an energy bill ... you can assume that something good has happened for the cause of economic liberty and commerce. PUT THE SHOE ON THE OTHER FOOT ... AND STAND BACK Last week The Wall Street Journal got its hands on some strategy memos from the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. These memos detail their plans and strategies for blocking Bush nominees to federal appeals courts. Amazing stuff. One memo was to Democratic Senator Dick Durbin. The memo informed him of meetings on his schedule with the leaders of several civil rights organizations. The memo explained to Durbin what these so-called civil rights leaders wanted:
This memo was dated November of 2001. The Democrats knew that Americans were united behind the President in the wake of the terrorist attacks ... so just wait until next year when they'll tolerate our partisan tactics. In case you missed this nuance, the memo makes it clear that the opposition to these judicial nominees is based on partisanship, nothing else. Another memo to Dick Durban mentioned Miguel Estrada. The memo said that the civil rights groups felt that Estrada was "especially dangerous, because ... he is Latino..." There you go! Civil rights leaders opposing a judicial nominee specifically because of his ethnicity. I'll just leave it to your imagination to figure out what would happen if the media turned up a Republican memo which contained any hint that a judicial nominee should be opposed "... because he is black." READING ASSIGNMENTS That whacko Lord Mayor of London is at it again. This time he says that George Bush is the greatest threat to life on this planet that we've ever seen. Previously Lord Mayor Whacko said that Bush headed "the most corrupt and racist American administration in over 80 years." It must be the water. Are you wondering what Judge Roy Moore, the Alabama Ten Commandments Judge, is going to do for his next trick? Well, wonder no more. One of Clinton's top advisors is out there blasting Howard Dean. Now why do you suppose he would do a thing like that? Oh, come on. You know why. It's because the last thing the Clintons want from next year's presidential elections is for a Democrat to win. Dean is the leading Democrat ... so he must be attacked. George Will says that Howard Dean presents a classic damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario for the Democrats. Gotta love it. A U.S. appeals court judge is finally questioning our government's ability to slam an American citizen in jail indefinitely without lawyers and without charging that person with a crime. It's about time. | |
