Thursday, April 22, 2004ANOTHER MAGIC MOMENT WITH GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS. One-half of Philadelphia middle school teachers couldn't pass a basic federal competency test. As they said on Fox News last night, this means that middle school students in Philly have a 50/50 chance of being right when they say that their teachers don't know what they're talking about. IT'S ALL FOR THE OIL
You are not likely to know much about the United Nations Oil For Food Program unless you listen to talk radio, or watch Fox News Channel or ABC. That's right, ABC. For some reason known but to God, ABC has suddenly decided to pay some attention to this emerging story. Here are your Cliff notes. Under the terms of various UN resolutions, Saddam Hussein was forbidden from selling his oil. The UN allowed him to sell enough oil, however, to get the money he needed to pay for food and medicine to feed his people. As it turns out Saddam, under the watchful eye of the UN, sold that oil to build palaces and to buy protection. Saddam, you see, would give some of his favorite politicians vouchers. These vouchers would allow these individuals to sell Iraqi oil and pocket the profits. Several senior UN officials are implicated, along with more than 270 prominent foreign officials from other countries ... France and Russia included. What is the US position on Iraq's oil? The Bush Administration is determined to see to it that oil profits will be used for the reconstruction of Iraq and the welfare of its people. Prior to the war several top officials in the UN and in many foreign officials were determined to see to it that these oil profits, or a goodly portion of them, went into their pockets. And the leftist protestors in this country say that Bush sent the troops over there for Iraqi oil. Back to the vouchers. These vouchers from Saddam to UN officials, and other officials from countries like France, amounted to bribes. When someone bribes someone else, they expect something in return. What was Saddam expecting in return? Protection? He certainly got that, not only from the UN, but from France and Russia. What happens to these people if Saddam gets overthrown? Easy. They get exposed. Could this possibly be a reason why the governments of France and Russia were so opposed to our actions in Iraq? Better to leave the Iraqi people to live with their cruel dictator than to be exposed as corrupt, I guess. Another question. Why is ABC the only major news organization (other than Fox News) that is covering this? Perhaps it is because they feel the American people wouldn't support turning over the Iraqi reconstruction and the formation of a new government to an organization identified with corruption and scandal. BUSH SAYS AMERICANS HAVE REASON TO FEAR ANOTHER ATTACK Yesterday, President Bush gave a speech to the Newspaper Association of America. Afterward, he did an interview with the Associated Press in which he conceded that people who expect another terror attack have good reason to. The reason? "This is a hard country to defend." There's today's reality check, and it really doesn't make a very good headline. The fact is the freer the country, the harder it is to defend against terrorism. The fact of the matter is there is no real way to defend against a terrorist attack, just like there was no way to really prevent 9/11. In a free society, someone is always going to be able to slip through the cracks. Unless you're going to strip-search every last person that gets on an airplane and search every shipping container that comes into the United States, you are never going to be able to "defend" against a terror attack. So what is the answer? The answer is to keep doing what we have already been doing. And that is to go to where the terrorists are, find them and kill them before they try to kill us. Choke off the supply of Islamic terrorists, and they are less likely to attack this country. That's why the war on terror is so important, and why John Kerry is so dangerous. Rogue regimes like Afghanistan and Iraq are places where terrorists train, set up bases and plan attacks. They're like fire ants. You aren't going to control fire ants by stomping on the occasional scout that happens upon your picnic. You find the ant colony, and eliminate it.. Some countries in the world get this (Britain, Australia, Poland) while other countries do not (Spain, Honduras and assorted Euro-weenies.) With Bush's recent rise in the polls, maybe people are starting to get the message through their thick liberal heads: you can't worry about jobs and healthcare when your very existence is at stake. CONGRESS ALL OF A SUDDEN WORRIED ABOUT SPENDING Well how about this. The United States Congress, never one to worry about government spending, is all of a sudden concerned about how much the war in Iraq is costing. They weren't this concerned about the government spending when it came to say, the highway bill. Or how about welfare spending? Education? So why all of a sudden have they become fiscally responsible when it comes to defending this nation? Oh ... this one is so easy. It's because they're not the ones spending the money, that's why, and because it's not being spent in their home districts. Right there in the thick of this newfound concern over government spending is alleged "Republican" Senator Chuck Hagel. Hagel says that "Every ground squirrel in this country knows that it's going to be $50 billion to $75 billion in additional money required to sustain us in Iraq for this year." Hagel knows that every dollar that is spent in the war on terror is a dollar that they can't spend on pork projects and social welfare spending. This is like a brat kid complaining about his allowance not being raised, just as the house is being foreclosed on. The liberals don't like their spending priorities being taken away, and they're whining about it. Too bad....the money is needed for the military, not for them to buy votes with government programs. The United States confiscates and wastes so much of our money on so much nonsense that they should spare no expense when it comes to fulfilling an actual Constitutional duty, like providing for the safety and security of the United States. SENATOR'S WIFE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT This is one of those stories that almost too good to be true...it's almost difficult to imagine how someone could be this stupid. But they are, so here we go. Wanda Baucus, wife of Democratic Senator Max Baucus, got into it at Johnson's Garden Center in Washington D.C. She wound up assaulting someone, for which she was later charged. And what was all this over? A bag of mulch. That's right, a bag of mulch. Apparently Mrs. Baucus was upset that someone was being served ahead of her and decided to strike the woman in the face and body several times. She must have snapped. Maybe the person was annoying. Who knows? Baucus says he is standing by his wife, and no one would expect him to do anything different. Anyway, notice how this is being covered in the media. Outside of a passing mention here or a link there, not much coverage. What if say, it had been the wife of Republican Senator Bill Frist? Why then you know it would be top story team coverage! Something to think about when it comes to bias in the media. READING ASSIGNMENTS Pat Boone (remember him?) thinks censorship of radio, television, music and the movies is just dandy. Have you heard that a ship bound for New York was stopped in Italy .. and they found more than 7,500 Kalashnikov and AK-47 rifles? Did you know that John Kerry used to be able to speak French? Yeah, I said "used to be." Apparently the skill has now been lost. Next to the presidential election, one of the most important contests this year is the Republican primary in Pennsylvania between Senator Arlen Specter and challenger Pat Toomey. Ann Coulter details how Specter is a liberal and no friend of the Republican party. Today is Earth Day, and the Bush administration is accused of trashing the environment. Larry Elder tells why this is not so, and interviews a really good source. The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement: "May we live long and die out" Do your part for the environment...raise your next baby diaper-free! Worried that there might be a repeat of 2000 in Florida this year? Actually, according to a recent poll, the numbers favor Bush there. David Hill explains. The Kerry campaign is refusing to release his wife's income tax records, because sKerry says there is no law requiring it. Turns out there is no law on the matter at all, as Robert Novak discusses. It is unlikely that Kerry would be where he is today without his wife's wealth. Florida is going to be one of the big battleground states in November, but George Will looks at another important state, Arizona. Since the state's founding, no Republican has ever been elected president without winning Arizona. So after the pounding that President Bush has taken in the media, on Capitol Hill and from the Kerry campaign, his poll numbers have gone up. Brent Bozell has a take on why this may be so. Looks like things are getting worse for Air America. Al Franken and Company are down to being on the air in only one major city. I guess they're going to have spend even more money to get back on the air. Saturday's killing of Islamic terrorist and Hamas leader Abed Al-Aziz was not only a victory for Israel, but also a victory for America. Erick Stakelback explains why the media routinely gets this wrong. Bob Woodward and his publisher are spinning his book toward the anti-Bush crowd to get more sales, says John Podhoretz. If the winds were blowing the other way, they would spin it as a pro-Bush book, which it is. The coalition of the whining are still wrong on Iraq says this op-ed piece in The Australian. The majority of Iraqis say their lives are better now than under Saddam Hussein. But that's not what the media are telling us. You can now view John Kerry's medical records online. | ||
