SOONER OR LATER ... AMERICA'S RESPONSIBILITY?

No question ... the tragedy that has occurred in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, India and other countries in the way of this past weekend's devastating Tsunamis is beyond imagination.  The death toll is now 40,000 dead.  There are thousands missing.  The death toll could easily pass 50,000 ... and that's before disease epidemics sweep the affected regions.

I have an uneasy feeling that sooner rather than later the United States is going to become an object of derision and hatred in the wake of this disaster.  We've already pledged millions ... and millions more will follow.  As soon as the first $15 million was sent on its way the United Nations started chiming in.  Now ... listen to this.  The UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs is charging the United States with being "stingy."  That's right, we're "stingy"  The United States leads the world when it comes to contributions for international relief, not only on a governmental level, but through private donations.  Nobody .. no country .. gives more.

Food aid?  The demands being placed on the people of the United States are, according to this morning's Washington Times, "stretching capacity."  Now the US is going to have to figure out a way to meet the demand for food aid to the ravaged regions.   The Times story didn't mention this .. .but I am just insensitive enough to do so ... but a good part of this food aid, and other types of American aid, are being sent to countries that are torn apart by Islamic- inspired wars and violence.  There.  See if anyone else brings that up.

Jan Egeland says America is being "stingy"

Giving the most is not enough for this particular UN operative.  His name is Jan Egeland, he's from Norway.  He is actually saying that there should be tax increases in the United States to pay for increased aid.  He says the American people "want to give more."  Somehow Egeland fails to realize that there is no law in the United States that would prevent any American from giving anything he wants to the relief effort.  I guess in Egeland's world you only truly give when the money is seized by government.  The United Nations has been trying for years to get some sort of taxing authority it can use against the world's wealthier nations.  Look for a resurrection of those efforts in the wake of this disaster.

Basic anti-capitalism is going to rear its head here also.  As the weeks and months go on any business or corporation, especially one based in the United States, which makes any profit form any business relationship connected to disaster relief or the rebuilding of the affected areas will be condemned.

I'm not saying that the United States should not help here.  We're part of the community of nations, and our position of social and military dominance carries a price tag.  Part of that price tag is the requirement that we step forward at times like these.  But America doesn't step forward out of a sense of responsibility, but also because of the basic goodness of its people.  I've already received dozens of emails from people asking for my advice on just how they can help in the relief effort.  The problem here is that no matter how much our America does, I can assure you it will not be enough.  There will be the Jan Egelands out there condemning us for not raising taxes to give more.  Oh ... and rest assured that the only aid donations from the U.S. that will get the world's attention will be those that flow through government.  Rest assured that the private charity that will be shown by individual Americans will be largely discounted, if not ignored.

And when this is all over .. when the billions of dollars have been spent to relieve as much suffering as possible ... look for the world to turn to the United States to make sure this doesn't happen again.  It will be our responsibility to install systems to warn of future Tsunamis.

Oh ... and just how long will it be before someone steps forward and blames this quake on global warming?   That would mean that the whole thing is America's fault anyway.

TSUNAMI RELIEF

The American Red Cross continues to take donations for tsunami victims through its International Response Fund.  Other organizations are accepting donations as well.  More information here. Remember, if you're donating to the United Nations, be sure to send more than $15 million, because anything less is too stingy.  Which leads us to the rest of today's Nuze....

9/11 PLANE SHOT DOWN?

The conspiracy theories are flying over something Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said during his Christmas Eve trip to Iraq.  Here's the quote that's causing the uproar:

"I think all of us have a sense if we imagine the kind of world we would face if the people who bombed the mess hall in Mosul, or the people who did the bombing in Spain, or the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania and attacked the Pentagon, the people who cut off peoples' heads on television to intimidate, to frighten – indeed the word 'terrorized' is just that. Its purpose is to terrorize, to alter behavior, to make people be something other than that which they want to be."

That's right, Rummy referred to a plane being "shot down" over Pennsylvania.  Immediately the Bigfoot-UFO- Michael Moore crowd jumped on the gotcha. A ha! Rumsfeld finally admitted what happened!  Well, not really.  First of all, look at exactly what he said.  He is saying the terrorists bombed the mess hall in Mosul, bombed Madrid, attacked New York and "shot down the plane over Pennsylvania."  So those who believe this is some sort of slip are wrong.  Taken literally, Rumsfeld is saying the terrorists shot down the plane, which we all know isn't true.  To somehow get from what he said that the United States shot down that plane is just ridiculous.

Besides, the facts are well-known based on telephone calls and radio transmissions from the plane: the plane was crashed after the cockpit was stormed by the passengers  Don't buy that?  Then, just for a second, think of it this way: what if the US Military had shot down the plane?  Same difference.  The plane would have been shot down to save the lives of the target it was headed for.  Either way, the blame for their deaths likes squarely with the Islamic thugs that hijacked the plane.

The Pentagon says Rumsfeld misspoke, which he clearly did.  Those who think the Military shot down United Airlines Flight 93 should leave their parents' basements and wash their Luke Skywalker PJs a little more often.

LAYING BLAME FOR TSUNAMI

Already the suggestion is being made that the Tsunami disaster in Asia was caused not by a naturally occurring environmental phenomenon, but by...you guess it.....global warming!  That's right...all the SUV drivers now have reason to feel really guilty: they are directly responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people.  Or so the left wants you to think.

So be on the lookout for an anti-capitalist, global warming explanation for what happened.  Once the initial coverage has subsided, the media will begin asking questions, America will be blamed, and so will George Bush.

Just be forewarned.  Remember: when a natural disaster happens, it's always the United States' fault.

RSS FEED

It looks like I can't upload the updated rss feed to the server from home. It may have some sort of uber security on it that only allows me to upload from the office. It may be something else. In the meantime, the permalinks will still be added but there may be no RSS feed until 1/4. -ww

What do Al Gore, John Kerry and Viktor Yanukovych all have in common?  They don't like to concede elections they've clearly lost.  The controversy continues in the Ukraine.
