Tuesday, June 8, 2004REMEMBERING REAGAN
The
nation continues to mourn President Ronald Reagan's passing this week, with his
casket on display at the Reagan library in California. Over 14,000
people have waited in line to pay their last respects. People loved
Reagan...perhaps that's why the left could never counter his appeal. As the week
goes on this is going to frustrate the left more and more. Question: When is the left going to completely lose it this week?
They've already gone nutso in their Democraticunderground.com website.
You're also hearing some rather nasty comments from the leftist stronghold of
the entertainment industry. Just wait .. my guess is that before the week
is out the hatred is going to start shining through. One big leftist fear this week is that the emotion being showed for Ronald
Reagan is going to start washing over to the Bush presidency. Reagan had
the resolve to fight communism when the conventional leftist wisdom was that we
should merely be satisfied with a policy of containment. Bush has the
resolve to fight Islamic terrorism while, again, the leftist policy is one of
containment. The parallels are obvious, and sooner or later the left is
going to have to step forward with the rhetoric of hatred in an attempt to keep
the people from connecting any more dots.
The tribute to Ronald Reagan will last all week, culminating in his state
funeral in Washington on Friday. Maybe people really do get Reagan after
all. One thing's for sure: the left still doesn't get it, and never
will. Except for the New York Times, they're just laying low for
now, but you can expect them to come out of the woodwork. DID I MENTION THE NEW YORK TIMES? Yes, I did. And why? Because the Times is making no effort
whatsoever to hide its disdain for Ronald Reagan. While other
liberal newspapers like the Washington Post are running banner headlines
covering the death of Ronald Reagan, the Times ran a three-column story on
Sunday, and only one column on Monday. Also, we have these gems from the
pages of the Times: "It was Mr. Reagan's good fortune that during
his time in office the Soviet Union was undergoing profound change, eventually
to collapse ..."
and then there's this gem in a Monday editorial: "Looking back now, we can trace some of the
flaws of the current Washington mindset -- the tax-cut-driven deficits, the
slogan-driven foreign policy -- to Mr. Reagan's example."
I can hardly wait to see what the times has to say as the week goes on.
The media just wouldn't be the media without a little condescension, would
it? The overwhelming amount of media coverage is positive toward Reagan,
but the media is getting their digs in here and there.
The top two things mentioned are the Iran-Contra affair and the deficit spending
that occurred while Reagan was in office. Now, keep in mind about
Iran-Contra...the point of the whole operation was to free hostages. How
was that a bad thing?
The media has been trying to get Reagan with this since it happened. They
really, really thought they had him on this one. Too bad for them it
didn't work. Reagan left office with some of the highest approval ratings
in history.
Then there's the deficit and the national debt. While government spending
propelled to new heights during the Reagan years, a few things are worth
noting. First, all of that money was authorized and spent by a
Democratically-controlled House of Representatives. If it really was that
big of a deal then, why didn't the Democrats support the spending cuts necessary
to balance the budget? They didn't, because just like now, they don't ever want
to cut spending.
As for the Reagan administration's defense spending, it was worth every
penny. It was this spending that won the Cold War. Reagan made it
clear that he was ready to spend so much on military efforts that the Soviet
Union would go bankrupt trying to keep up. It worked. The Cold War
was won with money, not bullets. Isn't that a much-preferred scenario? We also have a somewhat obscure British entertainer named Morrissey who
managed to get some ink yesterday. Morrissey was on stage when he got word
of Reagan's death. He announced the death to the crowd, and the crowd
cheered. Morrissey then said that it should have been Bush who died
instead. Crowd goes wild. I wonder if this clown knows the Ditzy
Twits? THE POODLE SUSPENDS THIS WEEK'S DOG SHOWS You know, you really have to feel just a bit of empathy for John Kerry.
No matter what he does he just can't seem to capture any real headlines.
He is learning his lesson though. This week he's suspending most of his
hard campaigning. The nation is going to be focused on the ceremony
surrounding the funeral for Ronald Reagan. Then there's that G8 conference
going on in Georgia. Maybe next the rest of the world will go into
something resembling neutral so that Kerry can actually be heard above the din. SADDAM TRIAL LACKS SMOKING GUN
Saddam Hussein has now been in Coalition custody for 6 months, since being
dragged out of a rat hole in Iraq on December 13th. Apparently what is
going to happen is that he will be tried by the Iraqis. Saddam even
has a 20-member legal team.
It's now being reported that prosecutors are struggling to build a case, because
they are having problems finding witnesses and evidence to prove that Saddam
committed atrocities. Do you mean to tell me that Johnnie Cochran is
on the defense team?
If there is anyone on this earth that is guilty as charged, it's Saddam
Hussein. From gassing the Kurds to using chemical weapons, Saddam has done
it all. He even had disloyal members of parliament whacked, one right
after the other, not long after taking power. What more evidence do they
need? Could Saddam walk on a technicality? Maybe...but only if they
Iraqis let him.
The only smoking gun they need in this case is one to use in Saddam Hussein's
firing squad. Oh, and another thing. This should send a message to our Special Ops
folks in the Middle East. When they find Osama they need to make sure that
there are no future headlines worrying about a lack of evidence.
O.J. SAYS HE LOST OUT
This guy is unbelievable. In an interview with Fox News, O.J. Simpson, says he
regrets not spending more time with his kids, and he feels like he "lost
out." You've got to be kidding me. Oh .. and he also said that he was
"mad at Nicole" because she hung out with a rough crowd. Yeah ..
him.
Here's a guy that got away with 2 murders...got off scot free...and he can't
stop running his mouth. Then, he has the audacity to say that after he
brutally murdered his ex-wife and her boyfriend, he feels like he lost
out. I guess he doesn't feel that Nicole lost out when he slit her throat.
This guys actually does interviews...and pretends that he didn't do it.
Why does the media buy into it? There is no doubt whatsoever that O.J.
Simpson is a murderer. Instead of sitting on death row, he's out playing
golf and giving interviews. Our celebrity culture at work.
The people that lost out were the two people whose lives he snuffed out.
And he did do it, by the way. Don't argue with me on this one.
ENDING FIXED-RATE STUDENT LOANS
Get ready for a pity party...here comes more manufactured outrage over the
ending of a government handout. But it's about time this one be put out to
pasture.
There is a proposal in Congress to end subsidized, fixed-rate student
loans. For those of you that were educated in government schools, that
means that people who take out student loans will have to pay the going rate for
interest, and the government will no longer kick in somebody else's money to
pick up the slack. Good.
Predictably, The Poodle has come out against the idea, saying that the plan
would harm students. But why is it the function of the federal government
to subsidize student loans and guarantee them? Why should the taxpayer get
the shaft when people default? Why are we paying to artificially lower the
rates on these loans?
The federal government should get out of the student loan business entirely.
READING ASSIGNMENTS
Several times now the new government of Iraq has thanked the people of the
United States for their sacrifice. Have
you read about this in the media? No, I didn't think so. I
wonder why not?
This is what the left is so worried about. The
Bush doctrine is a Reagan legacy. This is why the left is going to
have to trash Ronald Reagan before the week is over. Al-Qaeda says Western
airliners will be targets of terror attacks in the near future. Do you
have enough confidence in government airline security to put your life into
their hands? Could be time for a road trip this summer instead.
Ronald Reagan deserves giant status in the history books for defeating the
Soviet Union and winning the cold war. Dick
Morris tells us why.
Media bias is keeping the good news in Iraq away from the public. Where
have you heard the following statement reported: "I would like to
thank the coalition, led by the United States for the sacrifices they have
provided in the process of the liberation of Iraq." Hardly
anywhere, as Mort Kondrake explains.
Ronald Reagan should be most remembered for what happened in Europe, where the
largest peaceful revolution in history happened just after he left office, says
George Will.
Even
liberal Democrats are having to admit that nothing stuck to Reagan, and he
was truly The Great Communicator.
Ronald Reagan....a wonderful life. A
nice tribute from Cal Thomas.
The
evil empire speech.....still good after all these years. The
bedwetters really had nightmares over this one.
Unbelievable....Democrats
at the DNC resisted lowering the flag in honor of Reagan until they
absolutely had to. Talk about no class. (last story on the page.)
Some journalists were still taking shots at Reagan...the
Media Research Center is there to cover the bias.
Reagan outlasted all the doubters...and had a vision that could see for miles. Charles
Krauthammer has this essay.
Long after many had given up, David
Limbaugh says Ronald Reagan had unrelenting faith in the American
people.
Bill Cosby's remarks about the shortcomings of minorities in America continues
to make waves. Here's the latest from
Star Parker.
Ronald Reagan now belongs to the ages. Mona
Charen recalls the first time she met the president, and talks about the
lasting impression he made on the world.
Reagan was a man of extraordinary vision, great compassion, and resolute
leadership. Oliver
North, who spent five years in the Reagan administration, looks back.
Some of Ronald Reagan's most important achievements came with tax and economic
policy. Jack
Kemp explains. |
