Thursday, March 11, 2004THE TRUTH ... COMING OUT OK .. So I was telling you about this at the beginning of the week. Every once in a while I find the acorns before the other squirrels. But now more and more people are learning the truth about the attacks on President Bush's campaign ads last week. To listen to the mainstream media last week you would have thought that a group of September 11th families just erupted in spontaneous anger when they saw a Bush television ad featuring images of the Islamic terrorist attacks on Washington and New York. Now we know that this was not so. Now we know that a left-wing, anti-war group called "September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows" was sitting in the Democratic ready room just waiting for these ads to hit the air. As soon as the first ad hit this group produced some widows to scream false outrage. I've already had my say on this. Here's a column from Jay Bryant for those of you who need a little brushing up. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF MEDIA BIAS I may be wrong here, but isn't it John Kerry who has been telling anybody who cares to listen that it is the Republicans who have been and will be launching vicious horrible attacks on him? Yup. I think that's about right. It's a basic part of sKerry's stump speech. "The Republicans will launch ugly, terrible attacks against me." So then sKerry is caught speaking to some union sheet metal workers in Chicago. He doesn't know the cameras are still on .. but they are, and they catch him saying "this is the most crooked, lying group I've ever seen." Who? Why, the Bush Administration, of course! Kerry says that the Bush campaign is going to attack him, and then pulls that "crooks and liars" line. Well .. the Kerry folks had to really put their heads together on this one. Finally they came up with a spin that they think will work. Kerry, you see, was only talking about the "Republican attack machine," not necessarily Bush and his associates. Now come on ... let's give him credit here. First Kerry says the Republicans are going to attack. Then he attacks the Republicans and gets caught. Then he says that he was only attacking the Republicans who were going to attack him. Yeah ... that works. Of interest here is how some elements of the media have treated this story. The Associated Press covered Kerry's appearance at the sheet metal plant in Chicago. The AP story that followed the headline read: "Kerry Wants Deeper Middle Class Tax Cuts." The reference to Kerry's "crooks and liars" comment was buried in the middle of the story. The Associated Press was also present earlier in the week when President Bush made a speech on economic policy. During that speech he detailed all of the positive news about America's economic picture, and mentioned that the the Democrats were attacking an economy that was strong and getting stronger! So ... what is the AP headline for this story? "Bush Blasts Democratic Attacks on Economy." Do you see the difference here? When George Bush gives a speech on economic policy, the AP says he is blasting the Democrats. But the headline for the story detailing Kerry's "crooks and liars" comment only mention's Kerry's desire for deeper middle class tax cuts. Media bias can be very subtle while being very effective. In both Bush's appearance and Kerry's appearance the candidates made positive statements about their own policies, and negative statements about the opponent. The headline for Kerry's story highlights his policy ideas, the headline for Bush's story highlights his criticism of Democrats. Par for the course, my friends ... and there's going to be a lot more to come. REPUBLICAN SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN SAYS NO TO KERRY TICKET Yesterday, while appearing on 'Good Morning America' to talk about steroids in baseball, Arizona Senator John McCain was asked by Charlie Gibson if he would consider joining the presidential campaign of John Kerry. As dumb as that sounds, the media can't stop fantasizing about the Kerry/McCain "dream ticket." McCain's response did nothing but fan the flames. "John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," said McCain. And when pressed further, he said "obviously I would entertain it. It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk. They'd have to be taking some steroids, I think, in order to let that happen." All it took was him saying he would entertain it, and the media off and running with their wild speculation. Last night McCain's office slammed the door shut by saying Senator McCain would not be a candidate for Vice President in 2004. I have to say here that we need less of John McCain, not more. John McCain is not a friend. He is the principal architect of that repulsive campaign finance reform act that is being used to strip Americans of their right to political free speech. McCain is more concerned about incumbent protection than he is about freedom of expression. The sooner he goes away, the better. For some reason, though, the media has this love affair with John McCain. He was the media's favorite "maverick" during his 2000 campaign against President Bush in the Republican primary (which he lost miserably.) It's a love affair that seems to be based on McCain's willingness to criticize Republicans. That's a sure way to endear yourself to the DC and New York press corps. HOWARD DEAN SELLS OUT So much for the all the Deanie babies and their "movement." Of course, in the end, like a good liberal Democrat, Howard Dean went back on everything he said about John Kerry during the campaign and came calling at the Kerry headquarters to embrace the front-runner and "work closely with John Kerry to make sure we beat George Bush in November and turn our country around." Apparently, that is supposed to stop short of an endorsement. Whatever. He could have at least waited until the convention to hand over his followers. Not to let this one slip, the Bush campaign immediately released the "Howard Dean's greatest hits on John Kerry" press release, which included such gems as Dean saying "you're not going to change America by nominating someone whose biggest talent is talk." He also has accused Kerry of giving the president of the United States a blank check to invade Iraq. And the list goes on. How interesting that in just a few short weeks, Howard Dean has now flip-flopped on the flip-flopper. Poor Deaniacs.. they thought their guy was not like the others. He was going to take back the White House, and now all he is doing is supporting the very special interest candidate that he railed against. Looks like the Deanie babies were all taken for a ride. Oh well...there's always Ralph Nader. READING ASSIGNMENTS Now this ought to be interesting. Peggy Noonan says that John Kerry stars in "Airplane," George W. Bush in "The Happy Warrior." And now, the best column ever written about the controversy surrounding 'The Passion of the Christ,' brought to you by Ann Coulter. She even fits in a nice little zinger at the end about Islamic terrorists. Happy reading. Now it's Tim Robbins' turn. Hyper-leftist Robbins has written a little play. It's called "Embedded" and it opens off Broadway this week in New York. In this play Robbins portrays Bush and his advisors as a group of men who plotted a war against Iraq to distract Americans from a failing economy. There's that failing economy bit again. WHAT failing economy? Where the hell does Tim Robbins live anyway? Here's another column you folks who are whining about jobs really shouldn't read. The jobs picture in America is great, and getting greater. Joel Mowbray writes that John Kerry is a despot's best friend. They're really rooting for him up there on the axis of evil. About those overseas call centers ... not only private industry is using them. Seems the government uses them also. This is what happens when foreigners speak English better than some native-born U.S. citizens do. How many times have you called a government office for help and said to yourself "What the hell language is this person speaking anyway?" Here's a great idea...Larry Elder suggests giving an award for the "most offensive things uttered by black public figures." The nominees make up quite a list. The Kerry campaign likes to talk a lot about the failure of the 'No Child Left Behind' act. George Will begs to differ, and touts its success. Government schools aren't too happy about being held accountable, however. Cal Thomas talks about a troublesome part of the new Iraqi constitution that makes Islamic law the supreme law of the land. Not exactly an encouraging sign. The liberal talk radio network is all set to go on March 31st with three radio stations. Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo are going to have shows on the 'Air America Radio' network (more like hot air.) Good luck guys, and don't quit your day jobs. More and more people are buying vehicles that have DVD players in them, so people or kids in the back seat can watch DVDs. Turns out a lot of folks are watching dirty movies instead. This is going over like a lead balloon with the nosy morality police. Naked people are very offensive, you know. China looks like it's ready to start sending women into space. Well, I guess this beats murdering them shortly after they're born. You take progress where you can find it. A Senate bill passed yesterday would create a $60 million program to study climate change (global warming.) This is exactly the kind of ridiculous, wasteful spending that contributes to the deficit. By the way, the bill was championed by a Republican. The Heritage Foundation looks at the Haiti mess and makes a brilliant observation: to date, not a single US intervention in Haiti has ever been successful. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? Abu Abbas, the Palestinian terrorist who led the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship, died Monday in US custody. Good riddance, right? The Palestinian Liberation Front is accusing the United States of "assassination" for supposedly withholding medical care. Why should we care? |
