Thanksgiving Day 2004

Are you hosting some folks for Thanksgiving dinner?  Have they signed a Thanksgiving Guest Liability and Indemnification Agreement?

I'm spending Thanksgiving day with my family, but there are a few things that I wanted to share with my listeners and Nuze readers before I stuff myself.  First, I'm posting Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving proclamation for you to read.  This proclamation was issued at a time when America was divided by war.  That seems to be the situation today, so maybe you could take a few minutes to give it a read.  Then ... and I'm not trying to ruin your day here ... read the next item about the actions of some government school administrators in the San Francisco area of California.  Then you can give thanks that your child doesn't go to the Stevens Creek Elementary School.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Proclamation Establishing Thanksgiving Day

October 3, 1863

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies.  To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.  In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.  Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore.  Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things.  They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people.  I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.   And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

A. Lincoln

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IS BANNED IN A CALIFORNIA SCHOOL

Did you notice that Lincoln's Thanksgiving Day Proclamation contained several references to God?  That would mean that it could not be read to students at the Stevens Creek Elementary School in California.

Steven Williams is a fifth grade teacher at Stevens Creek.  Her has filed a lawsuit against Stevens Creek principal Patricia Vidmar and other school officials claiming discrimination.  Williams claims that he has been forbidden to use the Declaration of Independence in his classroom instruction.  And why?  Because it contains references to God and to Christianity, that's why.

This is enough to actually make a tough bar-fight kind of dude such as myself sit down and just cry.  Is this where we've come to in this country?  Those men who signed The Declaration of Independence put their lives and their fortunes on the line.  Some were killed for their treachery.  Others lost their families.  Many lost all that they owned.  We celebrate the signing of this document every year in one of our nation's most revered holidays, and now we have some school principal out there in Pelosi-land telling a teacher he can't use the Declaration in class because it mentions God?

By the time I hit the airwaves on Monday there's sure to be more news about this.  For now you can read Steven William's lawsuit right here at the Smoking Gun website.   There is also coverage of this story from Reuters, from The San Mateo County Times and from World Net Daily.

Need I say that this is a government school we're dealing with here?  Is this story going to be enough to convince some of you out there to at least give some thought to sending your child somewhere other than to the government for an education?  You know in your hearts that government doesn't do anything real well, few things well and most things horribly.  Why, then, do you continue to entrust the most precious things in your life to government?  Maybe I just heard a few heads being pulled out of the sand.

Do you want details about this school?  How about the address and some phone numbers?   Here you go.  Do with them what you will.

ATLANTA AIRPORT OUTRAGE!

For several days I've been telling you about out-of-control police officers at Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport.  Diana Dietrich-Barnes went to Hartsfield to pick up her mother.  She was parked at the curb for about one minute when a police officer, Terrance Alexander, ordered her to move.  As she backed up Alexander says that she bumped him with her side view mirror.  At that point her yanked her from the car and arrested her.  You can  click here to read the story about the arrest of Diana Dietrich-Barnes at Hartsfield.  Then Click here to see the video.  Just click on the link marked "Video Details Controversial Arrest." You will see Officer Terrance Alexander actually pick up this woman and literally slam her to the ground.

I've been in Atlanta for 37 years.  For 35 of those years I've been doing a talk radio show.  During that time I've met and come to know hundreds of Atlanta police officers.  With only one or two exceptions they've been just wonderful.  You are going to find those one or two exceptions in every line of work.  I can tell you though that ever since I came to Atlanta the scuttlebutt has been that Atlanta police officers who are out of favor with the city's political leadership or police officials have been assigned to the airport.  Whether you have trouble dealing with your superiors or with the public, it's off to the airport with you.  Terrance Alexander would seem to support this theory.  He has a long history of disciplinary problems with more than 11 reprimands and suspensions in the past four years.  Odd, isn't it, that this thug in blue would end up at the airport!

When Alexander's superiors refused to charge Dietrich--Barnes with a crime, he decided that he would swear out his own criminal warrant for her arrest ... on a felony charge no less.  Earlier this week the judge threw out Alexander's charges.  The next step here is for Diana Dietrich-Barnes to sue the absolute mess out of Alexander and the City of Atlanta.  Hopefully she will, and hopefully this menace with a badge will soon be looking for another line of work.
