I JUST HATE BEING RIGHT THIS WAY

I just can't stop thinking about that story I put in Nealz Nuze yesterday.  It was the bit about that spokesman for "Rock The Vote" slamming the idea of private Social Security accounts. In case you missed it, or your dog at the Nuze, here is what he said:

"To us, it's totally black and white.  This is the first generation ever that would be asked to pay for their own retirement and Social Security at the same time. This is what private accounts do. They saddle young people with an unfair burden."

Can you believe it? This is the first generation ever that would be asked to pay for their own retirement and Social Security at the same time?  Who in the world do these mindless idiots think has been paying for their Social Security up to now?  Is this what passes for critical, logical, rational thought on the part of today's young people? Are these the people who will be in charge of guarding our freedom in the years ahead?

They have a poll on Rock the Vote.  Here's the Rock the Vote "I Love Social Security" website. Check it out.  Poll takers were asked to finish the following statement:   "I was thinking about Social Security recently:"

Here are your possible responses:

  • Reading the news
  • Reading a blog
  • Watching TV
  • Talking with a friend
  • Reading an email
  • Something else
  • Wasn't thinking about Social Security recently

Wow!  Now that's one hard-hitting poll, dontcha think?  The website says "Take our Social Security Quick Poll" and all they want to know is how it came to pass that you were thinking about Social Security.  The poll doesn't even ask about private accounts.  Maybe the Rock the Vote crowd is afraid to find out what young people really think.

These people are actually selling "I love Social Security" bumper stickers, shirts and more.  Is there a better way to show your friends and neighbors that you have completely lost all touch with reality?   Here we have a system where they have to cough up 14% of their earnings every single paycheck, and that money is either (a) sent to current Social Security recipients; or, (b) spent by the Congress on some of their vote-buying schemes.  In return for your so-called "contribution" you are told that you will receive some sort of a benefit when you reach a certain age.  The benefit is not guaranteed, and the age can be changed.  And you're supposed to love this system?

And what's the alternative? You take your money and you invest it in an account that you own and you control.  Nobody can take it from you. The government can't deny you these benefits ... they're yours.  This is a system that has been tried in Chile, Galveston County, Texas, and several other places ... and the results are always the same. Under the private plans your retirement payments are always higher than they would be under Social Security, and they can't be taken away.

This idiotic poll on this mindless website only serves to reinforce what so many Americans think about the younger generation.  We won't go there.  I will say, though, that younger adults who listen to talk radio will see right through this Rock the Vote mindlessness.  Unfortunately, there are more young people listening to this Hip Hop crap out there than are listening to talk radio ... so the outlook isn't all that bright.

GAS PRICES ARE UP AGAIN

Here we go again.....most newscasts are being led with the reports of "record" gas prices.  The government said yesterday that the average price for a gallon of gasoline rose 6 cents in the last week to an average of $2.22 a gallon.  They claim this is a record, but it is not.  No price record is valid in any sense unless you adjust it for inflation .. and adjusted for inflation, gasoline was over three bucks a gallon in 1981.

A new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll reports that 58% of those polled say the gas prices are causing a financial hardship.  Perhaps if people hadn't been tripping all over themselves to buy gas-guzzling cars these past couple years, they wouldn't be feeling the pinch. Maybe if they lived a bit closer to work things might be better.  It might not be a bad idea to tell the rug rats to walk every once in a while also.   Too bad.  So what are we to make of the "problem" of high gas prices?

The fact is that this same exact thing is going to happen every year.  Once the weather breaks and we start to approach Memorial Day, demand is going to increase, supply will be tight and the price will go up.  This is going to happen every summer from now on.  Also, once summer approaches, refineries are required to produce different blends of gasoline especially for different markets.  This takes up valuable time and resources at refineries that are already stretched to the maximum.  Thank the eco-nuts for this.  As if that weren't enough, global demand for oil is surging, particularly from countries like China.  More dollars chasing fewer barrels of oil means a higher price every time.  That's called simple supply and demand, for those of you indoctrinated in government schools.

So when you pull up to the pump this week and see that you're paying almost $2.50 for a gallon of gas, don't blame George Bush....don't blame the oil companies....and don't blame the gas station.  Blame your friendly neighborhood environmental leftist who won't allow any new refineries to be built and opposes oil exploration in this country at every turn.

By the way, some examples of gas prices in other countries should make you feel a bit more fortunate:  Great Britain: $5.64 a gallon, Germany $5.29 and Japan $3.84.

Time to drill in ANWR and off the Gulf coast of Florida.

GORE TV TO HIT THE AIR

Poor Al Gore.  Ever since he lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush, things haven't been the same.  Oh...he did lose by the way...just in case you're a diehard leftist conspiracy theorist whose blood boils at the mere suggestion that Al Gore lost fair and square.  At any rate, Al didn't become president....and to make matters worse, he backed a losing horse in the 2004 race (Howard Dean.)  Then he made a series of over-the-top, off the deep end speeches that weren't very presidential, much less vice-presidential.  So what's next for Al Gore?

The former vice president rounded up some investors and bought a cable channel nobody watches and is going to convert it into a channel called "current," aimed at young people.  Former TV lawyer Joel Hyatt is going to run it, and even though Al says it's not going to be a liberal news channel, the list of people involved reads like a who's who of the left.

Al and his buddies no doubt believe their channel will counter the "conservative media." What they really mean is Fox News, which so far has not been shown to have a conservative bias in any of their news broadcasts.  It's interesting that one cable channel now means the whole media is conservative.

What about ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, etc.?  I guess they're not liberal.  Right.

Well ... let's welcome Gore TV to the lineup.  The last person out of the studios please remember to turn out the lights.

DICK CHENEY VS. TOM DELAY

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay declared after the Terri Schiavo case played out in the courts that the judges would answer for their behavior.  What he meant was that  because he didn't like their rulings, he was going to somehow seek retribution.  Well, Vice President Dick Cheney has weighed in on the matter.

Cheney spoke about the matter on Friday while before the editorial board of the New York Post.  He said that he would not support retribution against the courts, saying he didn't think that was appropriate.  He went on: "I may disagree with decisions made by judges in any one particular case. But I don't think there would be much support for the proposition that because a judge hands down a decision we don't like, that somehow we ought to go out -- there's a reason why judges get lifetime appointments."

Nice to see somebody in the Republican party has their head screwed on straight on this issue.

Liberals love to rail against greed, but as Thomas Sowell points out, they never seem to get too worked up when the government is the one being greedy.  Confiscating 50% of someone's income?  Stealing property through eminent domain?  That's not greed to the left.  Excellent column.

Sandy Berger's slap on the wrist for smuggling top-secret documents out of the National Archives by stuffing them down his pants sets a dangerous precedent.  David Limbaugh wants to know just what kind of message the Justice Department is sending.

Lousy graduation rates are yet another reason why education should be opened up to the marketplace.  Star Parker says the teacher's union (the NEA) is a big part of the problem.

Despite the long odds of anything actually happening, Bruce Bartlett reminds us that Social Security still needs to be reformed, and makes the case for it to happen.  Good luck.

Fresh from cleaning the salad dressing out of his hair, Pat Buchanan reminds us why Pope John Paul II was great.

Not only did he travel the globe preaching to millions on behalf of the Catholic Church, the Pope also played a major role in the fall of communism in Europe and the Soviet Union.  Jack Kemp has a history lesson.

The relationship between the White House and the Congress may be one of the reasons Social Security reform is failing.  Robert Novak says insiders tell him the administration has the worst Congressional relations they have ever seen.  Not good.

Rudy Giuliani apparently is not going to challenge The Hildabeast for her Senate seat next year, setting up a much bigger contest: the presidential election in 2008.  Not that Rudy has committed or anything.

Morning Sickness: Serial killer's father is selling videos of his grisly confession. Can't imagine how the son ended up a serial killer, eh?

Republicans hold both houses of Congress and the White House, and Democrats show no signs of life.  Ron Brownstein explains why Democrats are still lost in the shuffle.

Nothing like suspending yourself from hooks from the ceiling like a side of beef. Don't click if people suspending themselves from hooks through their flesh would be disturbing to you.

The French government, like the U.S. government, has ordered flags lowered in honor of the Pope.  Naturally, some leftist Euro-weenies are offended and are complaining. Too bad.
