NAPLES PRESS CLUB TONIGHT!

The Talkmaster will be speaking to the Naples (Florida) Press Club this evening about the FairTax and talk radio!  If you happen to be a member, reception is at 5:30 and the harangue begins at 6:15.  I'll try to be on time.

SETBACK FOR REPUBLICANS

The judicial filibuster fight in Washington is getting to be quite a spectacle.  Moveon.org has pledged $700,000 for television commercials attacking any rule change that would prevent filibusters.  One of the ads shows elephants trampling the congress.  Now there's an interesting thought:  If you allow an up-or-down vote on a judicial nomination that's the equivalent of elephants trampling the congress.

There's a reason why this filibuster fight is so important to Democrats.  For the last fifty years liberals have managed to enact more of their agenda through the courts than through legislative action.  Where the left fails in legislative initiatives, they often succeed in the federal courts.  Examples abound.  In California the left opposes a ballot initiative that would withhold certain taxpayer-funded services to illegal aliens.  The left loses, and the initiative passes.  The liberals immediately rush to the courts to have the will of the people overturned.

The Democrats are filibustering appellate nominees because they know that for the foreseeable future they will need a liberal judiciary in order to have any chance at all in enacting even a portion of their agenda.  Any appellate federal judge who believes in a strict construction of our Constitution is a threat to the leftist agenda, and most be stopped.

I know you've heard various stories on this, but never before in the history of this country has there been a Senate filibuster for a nominee to an appellate bench where that candidate had been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and where the candidate had the votes needed for confirmation on the Senate floor.

Ok .. having said all that, the Republicans had a bit of a setback in this particular battle yesterday.  I'm referring to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's little satellite broadcast to churches across the nation.  The telecast was billed as an event to denounce Democrats as "against people of faith."  This "against people of faith" line is a nicer way of saying "anti-Christian."

That's the way things are in today's America.  If you ever make any comment or suggest in any way that you don't think that it's a good idea for religious groups to attempt to use the law to promote their religious ideals you are "anti-Christian" and a "Christian basher."

Why do I call Frist's satellite broadcast a setback?  Because that little stunt did nothing but reinforce the idea that Republicans are more than willing to serve the goals of fundamentalist Christian conservatives, that goal being to have their religious beliefs codified and made a part of our law.   Americans saw that done in the Terri Schiavo matter, and made it very clear that they were less than pleased.  Many Americans will view Frist's address to churches over the weekend as a sure signal that his fight against the filibuster is really nothing more than a fight to give conservative Christians control over the nation's judiciary.

A "Vent" in this morning's Atlanta Journal-Constitution expressed that very fear:

"Girls, get your burqas ready. If conservatives succeed in controlling the judiciary, then we really will be on our way to becoming a Taliban Christian nation."

The fight to end the filibusters in judicial nominations should be presented to Americans as a fight for our Constitution and a fight for the clear intent of our founding fathers --- that judicial  nominees be approved by a majority vote of the Senators, not as a fight to bring religious ideals to the Congress.

BLOCKADING NORTH KOREA

It looks like President Bush may be finally taking on The Strange Little Gargoyle. North Korean communist dictator Kim Jong-Il has nuclear weapons. We have been negotiating with him for years to get rid of them. He won't do it, he's not going to, and talking to him has proven to be a waste of time. So what are we to do?

We could bomb North Korea...but that puts our friends to the South, along with those stationed across the DMZ, at risk. Now it seems the president has a solution. There is a report today that George Bush is considering requesting a U.N. resolution to blockade North Korea. In other words, it would be a quarantine whereby all shipments in or out of the country would be intercepted and checked for nuclear materials or components.

As Larry The Cable Guy would say, this is how you Git-R-Done. It's time to put The Gargoyle on notice...and take action. Surrounding his little rogue terrorist state and cutting it off from the rest of the world would send a message to the rest of the world that Kim Jong-Il's escapades will not be tolerated.

Look for Democrats and assorted leftists to oppose the idea ... along, of course, with some Republicans.  Remember, as difficult as you may find this to believe, there are those out there who want to see American weakened in world affairs.

The president once said you were either with us, or with the terrorists. You know who this nutcase is with...time to take him out.

TAKING DOWN BOLTON

The vote on whether or not to confirm John Bolton as ambassador the United Nations is scheduled for May 12th. Right now, his nomination is on life support. Democratic Senator Chris Dodd is calling on him to withdraw his name from consideration. Now a whole bunch of other people are jumping into the fray.

What seems to be the problem with Mr. Bolton? It would seem that people don't like his style. We're told he's a no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners type of guy. He's direct and he doesn't tolerate incompetence. So what's wrong with that? Not a thing.  After years of abuse at the hands of the United Nations, this might be a welcome change.

Now we hear that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw had a little tiff with Bolton back in 2003. It seems Straw didn't like Bolton's stance on negotiating with Iran over their nuclear program (boy, that worked out, didn't it? Not.) So Jack Straw complained to Colin Powell and they got somebody else. In retrospect, it looks like Bolton was right about Iran.

Some people have come forth with complaints that Bolton screamed at them. Yet, never in any of the media coverage are these people's agendas examined. Are they Democrats? Are they lying? Do they have a vested interest in seeing Bolton go down? There are a whole lot of reasons why people might want to smear somebody.

Democrats and the left oppose Bolton because he takes on the leftist appeasers at the State Department and doesn't back down. Too bad it looks like a few weak-kneed Republicans are about to sink his nomination.

More about this on the show today.

IRAN AT IT AGAIN

Our next stop on the Axis of Evil...Iran. The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced yesterday that no matter what the outcome is of the talks with the Euro-Weenies (on our behalf, by the way,) they still intend to continue enriching uranium. They said they would resume their operation in a matter of months, not a year. So what's our response to this? Naturally, to keep talking to them.

Enriched uranium is used to make nuclear weapons. Time for a bit of a lesson in cause and effect. Iran is an Islamic terrorist state that calls the United States 'The Great Satan,' supports terrorism and has called for the destruction of Israel. If they are allowed to make nuclear weapons, chances are they will use them, or at a minimum sell them to terrorists.

Why are we allowing Iran to become armed with nukes? When it comes to America-hating, Islamic jihadists...they only understand one thing: resolute force.  Anything else at this point will most probably be viewed as a sign of weakness.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Remember George Soros?  He's the squintillionaire who gave over $20 million to Moveon.org and other organizations in an attempt to defeat George Bush last year.  Well, would you like to know that you, the taxpayers, have forked over $30 million to a private foundation controlled by Soros?  Right.  And these Republicans and Democrats just can't seem to cut spending, can they?

An investigation found that a third of the world's assets...trillions of dollars...is parked in 70 tiny tax haven countries. Institute the Fair Tax in the United States and watch that money come home.

Hillary Clinton's bag man is going on trial May 3rd for underreporting campaign contributions. Dick Morris wrote him a letter advising him not to go down over The Hildabeast.

Here's a case of political correctness spinning out of control: there's a movement to remove "Christ" from B.C. (as in 'Before Christ.) The PC replacement would be...'Before Common Era.' Some people have way too much time on their hands.

President Bush's second-term agenda is on the ropes, and it's because Republicans are straying from the reservation. Oliver North says it's time for President Bush to crack the whip and bring people into line.

Mark Steyn says even a trained monkey would find it difficult to do a worse job presiding over the John Bolton hearings in the Senate. Steyn calls the allegations against Bolton ridiculous.

Why is the mainstream media in trouble? George Will explains it's because the younger generation is rejecting traditional journalism. Did you know the median age of the network news viewers is 60 years old? No wonder all the ads are for denture adhesive and adult diapers. Oh, and Viagra too.

Professor Ward Churchill spoke at the University of Hawaii not too long ago. All of the professors turned out for that one. David Horowitz recently spoke at the same place, but surprisingly...no faculty. Imagine that!

The White House has less than two weeks to save the Bolton nomination. Robert Novak takes a look at what went wrong, and what can be done to salvage the nomination.

The Islamic terrorist group Hamas is starting to slowly be legitimized. And while you might expect this to go on in some place like The Middle East or Europe, Diana West says you'll be surprised to know it has reached the White House.

Former Secretary of State under the first George Bush, Lawrence Eagleburger, has come out in support of John Bolton. He calls him blunt, but effective. Just what we need at the U.N.
