THAT NEW FLORIDA SELF DEFENSE LAW

Florida Governor Jeb Bush has now signed the bill .. and the left is mightily upset.  The bill?  You know, that bill that actually recognizes the basic human right of self defense.  Simply put, the new Florida law says that if find yourself under attack in a public place you don't have to look for a way to run away before you respond with deadly force.  Here's your actual wording:  In Florida a person now has "the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so, to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another."

What, pray tell, is the problem with that?  You're attacked.  You have a reasonable belief that you are in danger of great harm or death, or someone else is in danger, and you get to protect yourself with deadly force.  Imagine that!  A basic human right is the right of self defense.  The very first governments formed by humankind were governments formed for one purpose ... to act to defend the people.

But what about the opponents?  Well, it's the same old cast of characters.  The mainstream media and liberals ... Democratic leftists.  Democrats have a long history of opposing virtually any law that would allow a person to exercise their right to self defense.  Most of you don't remember this, but about 30 years ago Ted "The Slug" Kennedy came up with a law introducing a new Federal Criminal Code.  His idea was to compel the 50 states to adopt the federal code as their own.  In that bill there was a retreat requirement.  If you woke up in the middle of the night and heard someone rummaging around your home, you would be required to leave your home to the intruder if there was any way you could escape.  You were simply not allowed to protect your home and its contents if you had the option to turn tail and run.  Thankfully, Kennedy's bill failed.

But why is it that Democrats always seem to oppose measures like this?  Because it's all part of the standard Democratic/leftist mindset.  It's part of the war against individualism.  It's part of building reliance and dependence on government.  A law like Florida's actually reinforces the concept of individualism.  It recognizes the individual's right to self defense; the individual's right to dominion over their own body, their own personal safety and their own future.  Don't we realize that we're supposed to depend on government to protect us?  How dare we take that responsibility on ourselves?  To the liberal, it is the government that gives us, if it chooses to do so,  the right to defend ourselves; and since our right to self-defense comes from the government, then it is the government's right and responsibility to tell us just what we can and can't do to defend our lives and our property.

Recognizing one's right to self defense only serves to reinforce our sense of individuality.  Remember, Democrats have flatly stated that our nation is at war against individuality.  Attacking the individual right of self defense is part and parcel of that war.

Oh .. and as for those hysterical leftists who will scream about the "Wild Wild West?"  You need to know that there was less crime in the so-called Wild Wild West, where everyone carried a gun, then there is in almost any major urban area in America today.

NOW WE'RE GETTING SOMEWHERE

The outrage over high gas prices is only going to increase in the coming months. Memorial Day weekend (the traditional start of the summer driving season) is just a couple weeks away and the demand for gasoline will increase exponentially. Depending on where you are right now, a gallon of gas is currently running around $2.25 a gallon. More is some places, less than others. But still not that high.

Come summer, when people trot our their RVs and SUVs and head to the gas station, that number could easily reach $3 a gallon. Once again, the cries of outrage will fill the news of the day. You'll see George Bush on TV again down on his knees kissing the ring of some Islamofascist dictator to try and get them to squeeze out an extra few million barrels of crude.

But that's not really the problem. The problem is that come summertime, the oil refineries in this country will be running at full capacity...unable to keep up with the demand. But now, a report out today shows that the president of the United States finally gets it.

Apparently President Bush is going to propose building new oil refineries at closed military bases. Now that's a fantastic idea!  Make sure, however, that the refineries are privately owned, not owned by the government.  The proposal would provide the ability to get regulatory approval to get the refineries built, open and running.

Then, and only then, is the price of gasoline going to go down. Expect most Democrats and their leftist buddies in the environmental extremist movement to oppose the plan. They will propose (just before they get into their SUV or onto their private plane) that we all buy hybrid roller skates and ride public transportation more often.

But this is progress.

Oh .. by the way.   Bush is also going to propose more nuclear power plants .. and fast track those also.

ABU GHRAIB IS BACK

Do you know what yesterday was? Just another day? Nope. Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy (known to his friends as 'Teddy' and to some friends of Mary Jo Kopechne as 'murderer') took time out of his busy schedule to issue a press release reminding us all that it was the first anniversary of the scandal at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Thank you very much, Senator Kennedy.

Did Ted Kennedy say anything about the first anniversary of the liberation of Iraq?  The capture of Saddam Hussein?  Nope.  When this slime ball wants to celebrate an anniversary, he looks for one that can be cast in anti-American terms.

Make no mistake, Ted Kennedy and his liberal buddies hate the United States of America and especially despise the Military. They will never pass up an opportunity to bash the U.S., make us look bad, or draw attention to what they perceive as our shortcomings. All of this on top of the fact that Ted Kennedy is a backstabbing partisan Bush-hater. Back to his press release, though.

It was filled with all sorts of outrageous claims and outright lies. Right off the bat, he refers to the "torture" at Abu Ghraib. Actually, most of what went on there would barely qualify as prisoner abuse. He also compared the United States Military to Saddam's henchmen. Nice going. He also bemoaned the damage to our reputation in the Middle East. You see, liberals constantly worry what Islamic terrorists and assorted hate-mongering Muslims might think of us.

Like racism, the left must continue to dredge up problems so that they can continue to draw power from the "problem." Exploiting the men and women of the U.S. military for political gain is no problem for hardcore leftists like Teddy Kennedy.

Not that anyone seems to care. His brain-damaged constituents have been sending this national embarrassment to Washington for over 40 years.

DIGGING IN ON SOCIAL SECURITY

Social Security seems to be back on the front burner of late. Sadly, however, it looks like private, personal accounts are dead, thanks to the lies and the demagoguing of the Democrats and the AARP. Oh ... and thanks also to the economic ignorance of the American people.  (Thank you, government schools.)  So what is going to happen?

House Republicans, worried about their own hides in the upcoming midterm elections next year, want the Senate to come up with a plan first. The odds are that it will not contain any Social Security accounts, as President Bush promised when he ran for office. That's too bad.

What are we likely to get? Raised retirement age....cut in benefits...changing the cost of living increases and of course, they ever-popular "screw the rich" plan, whereby more income would be exposed to Social Security taxes. The program, which has no money in it and never will, shall continue to be run by the Imperial Federal Government, who will own the Social Security money and decide what to do with it.

It's a good time to be sure you're fully funding your own private retirement....because the government isn't going to.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Hillary Clinton's plan for border security, upon closer inspection, is really exactly the same as President Bush's plan for border security. Michelle Malkin (sigh) takes a look at the bipartisan incompetence when it comes to dealing with illegal aliens.

Republican leaders plan to reverse the ethics rule that requires one member of the other party to agree in order to start an ethics investigation. Translation: let the Tom DeLay hearings begin!  Don't we all recognize that the ethics procedures in Congress are nothing short of a joke?

The translator for the U.S. Special Forces that pulled Saddam Hussein out of his rat hole in December of 2003 punched old Saddam him in the mouth. He also had some very choice words for the dictator.....which are contained in the article. [Warning...naughty language that is very much not safe for work.]

Looks like John Bolton may just be confirmed. Bill Frist says the allegations are being debunked one by one. This is good news for us, and bad news for the United Nations.

The Dan Rather-less CBS Evening News is currently suffering its lowest ratings ever. Different anchor, same bias....and viewers can see right through it.

Speaking of low ratings....Air America continues its downward plunge. The liberal network just scored its lowest ratings ever. Better hurry up and cash those checks, Al. Byron York has more.

Former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul Volcker says his probe into the Oil-For-Food program has not cleared Kofi Annan. Perhaps somebody should let Kofi know that.

Democrats have become the new party of obstruction, meaning the left is the new party that wants to stop progress. John Podhoretz says it wasn't always so.

The ABC/Washington Post poll about filibustering judges was just as biased as you would expect it to be. Here's your CyberAlert from The Media Research Center

The standard of living in the United States has never been higher, yet for some reason, those that make it all possible are painted as villains. Walter E. Williams explains.

Oh those naughty closed-circuit security camera operators in Atlantic City!  Shame, shame, shame.  Now ... where's the videotape?
