Neal's Book Tour Schedule | target="_blank">amazon.com reviews

FAIRTAX UPDATE

Neal wants to be nice to Philip Hurst. He called the show today distraught that while he was holding a book signing at Barnes & Noble, people just kept coming in for The FairTax Book. Completely stealing his thunder. So go check out his book, Tarnished, at amazon.com. Maybe we can move him up a few notches in the rankings.
Well .. when I got up this morning The FairTax Book was running No. 3 overall on Amazon.com and No. 1 in nonfiction. What makes this all the more amazing is that the book is now available in bookstores.  Generally speaking, books start to slide a bit on Amazon when they make the transition from pre-publication to post-publication simply because people can drive to the nearest bookstore and get their copy immediately.  So ... what does this mean?  It means that interest in the book is increasing.  If you look at Amazon.com you'll see that there are over 90 review of the book posted so far.  That's one day.  The Amazon.com review page has become somewhat of a chat room on the FairTax.

During the fully expected delays at LaGuardia airport last night I was looking at a USA Today story on eminent domain.  Politicians across the country and in Washington are working to pass laws to protect private property rights in light of that hideous Kelo vs. New London Supreme Court decision. Now just why are politicians suddenly so worried about private property rights?  The Supreme's decision on eminent domain was a boon to politicians!  It increased their power!  Now they're trying to give that power back to the people?  When is the last time you saw politicians act on their own, without any provocation, to surrender power?  Answer ... probably never.  So why now?  Voters, that's why.  The people were so outraged over the Supreme Court decision that the political class new they had to act, or risk losing support.

And so it is with the FairTax.  With the implementation of the FairTax politicians would lose power.  They would no longer have the ability to easily manipulate the tax code to curry favor with one class of voters over another.  The class war aspects of tax policy would be over since the poor would essentially be relieved of the obligation to pay any federal taxes at all.  Under the FairTax there really is no way for any politician to manipulate federal tax policy for votes or to elicit huge campaign contributions from favored business or individual taxpayers.

Pretty depressing, isn't it.  The FairTax would seem to be doomed because there's little in it for politicians.  Well, let's go back to eminent domain.  From the local to the federal level politicians are falling over themselves coming up with ways to restrict eminent domain ... and it's only because they know that this is what the voters want, and what the voters are demanding.  The lesson is obvious for those of us who support the FairTax.  With the success of this book, we're on their radar screen.  Congressman Linder is getting calls and inquiries every single day from elected officials asking for meetings and details.  If the voters let the politicians know that they want the FairTax bill, HR 25, to get a fair hearing on Capital Hill, then a full and fair hearing the FairTax will get.  So ... buying the book and learning the details of the FairTax is only part of the equation.  Don't forget those calls, emails and faxes.  Find out when your congressman will be having his or her next town hall meeting.  Be there.  Ask your congressman to explain his position on this tax reform idea.  If your congressman, or senator, for that matter, shows a lack of knowledge, then tell them that you will be back at the next constituent meeting and that you will be there to ask the same question again.  If your elected official says that the FairTax would put an undue burden on the poor, ask him how he can say that in light of the fact that the president's tax reform commission said that the FairTax was the only tax reform proposal out there that would completely remove the federal tax burden from the poor in this country.

OK ... now let me stick my neck out here.  If you can't get to a book signing, Congressman Linder and I would still like to have the opportunity to sign your book.  So ... if you will send us a copy of your Amazon.com or other Internet bookseller receipt, or the receipt from your local book store, we will send you an autographed book plate to stick in the front of your book.  Just send the receipt in a legal-sized self-address and stamped envelope, and the book plate will be on its way back to you.

More later ... but let's look at some other fun stuff in the Nuze today.

LIMITING KELO

As I said, there seems to be some good news out of the states on the issue of eminent domain abuse these days.  After the disastrous Supreme Court ruling that gave cities carte blanche to steal your property and give it to a private developer, quite a few people were more than just a little upset.  In a strange twist on things, it is now the states that are limiting the runaway trampling of our Constitutional rights by the Federal judiciary.  Go figure.

First up: Alabama.  We've got to give credit where credit is due here.  Republican Governor Bob Riley signed a bill that was unanimously passed by the Alabama legislature.  That's right.  Unanimously.  Democrats and Republicans alike put their stamp of approval on the bill that will limit the ability of the Imperial City Government to rip you off.  Said the good governor: "A property rights revolt is sweeping the nation, and Alabama is leading it."  Good.  The Alabama law does have a loophole...communities can still declare properties blighted and hand them over to developers...but it's better than nothing.

Now let's take a look at the list of 16 states that have introduced legislation to prohibit the abuse of eminent domain.  They are: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas.  10 more states are planning on doing something about it.  They are: Alaska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Ohio, South Dakota, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Colorado, Georgia and Virginia.  Another handful of states are looking to change their state constitutions over the issue.  Among them: Alabama, California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and Texas.  Is your state on the list?

If not, it's time to figure out who your state representatives are in your state's legislature and demand action.  Otherwise, you might wake up one day with a notice tacked to your door like the residents in New London, Connecticut did.

BUSH CORRECTS THE RECORD

It had been reported that the Bush administration was switching gears in the War On Terror.  Somebody had decided that the use of the phrase 'The War On Terror' was no longer a good idea.  The new catchphrase was going to be the "global struggle against violent extremism."  Many administration officials were trying out the new phrase in public.  I actually liked the idea when the new catch-phrase referenced "Islamic extremism."  But the "I" word was removed.  Political correctness.  But now, the president corrected the record.

Said the commander in chief: "Make no mistake about it, we are at war."  He then went on to call it the "war on terror" no less than five times.  He also said "Make no mistake about it, this is a war against people who profess an ideology, and they use terror as a means to achieve their objectives."  Put another way, this is a war against Islamic terrorism.

The linguini-spined appeasers among us need to be constantly reminded.  We are currently fighting World War  IV...the fight against Muslim extremism.  It is a battle with a very well-defined enemy.  On one side, you have freedom-loving Americans (for the most part.)  On the other, you have a group of people who believe that women are property and anyone who does not believe in Allah and the Islamic faith is to be destroyed.

Will we win that war?  It's too early to tell.  Do people have the backbone to stand up for what they believe in?  Yes, but only it seems when we are attacked.  Then people's memories start to fade, and sympathy for the enemy grows.  That's were we seem to be going right now.

Come to think of it, the "War on Terror" is itself a little too politically correct.  How about the "War on the Islamic death machine?"  That's better.

THE SPENDAHOLIC GOP

News today that aside from national security, judicial philosophy and a few other things, there isn't much difference between Democrats and Republicans.  There is no greater example of this than the exponential rise in federal spending under the Republican-controlled Congress.

The Washington Post reports that just before members of Congress snuck out of town for their August recess, they approved $300 billion in new spending and tax breaks.  Is the Republican party...the party of Ronald Reagan...the party of supposedly limited government...ashamed of this?  Hardly!  As a matter of fact, the Congressional leadership is instructing the members to actually promote how much bacon they have brought home to taxpayers.  You need look no further than the massive $286.5 billion highway spending bill that was passed just before the August break.  Loaded with hundreds and hundreds of pet projects, it makes an absolute mockery of President Bush's calls earlier this year for spending restraint.

But even Bush's calls for spending limits are a joke.  George W. Bush is the biggest spending U.S. president since Lyndon Johnson.  And not just Homeland Security-related spending either.  How about expansion of entitlements like the prescription drug benefit for Medicare?  No Child Left Behind.  Billions and billions of dollars in new debt, all waiting for your children to pay when they grow up.  So what's the problem?

People like free money.  They enjoy seeing the federal government take money from the achievers and give it to them.  Everybody has a project, everybody wants a grant and a majority of the American public seems content to enjoy an ever-increasing brand of American socialism.

This is one of the many reasons we need the Fairtax.  Get rid of the hidden taxes, and unleash the American economy.  Once people see, right up front, exactly how much money they are sending to Washington, the pressure would increase on politicians to lower the tax rate and by association, the rate of spending.

As it is now, as long as people "get money back" at the end of the year, they're quite happy to watch somebody else pay.

HEATHER'S CORNER

Some musings from our intern:

NASA or NADA

There is controversy as to whether or not space exploration is worthy of federal (tax payer) funding. Space exploration has helped to create many medical advances among other more common household products that we take for granted. Project Mercury began in 1958 and helped to develop blood pressure testers in order to make sure that man's first orbit remained safe to his health. Scratch proof eyeglass lenses were originally the glass coating for satellites to protect them from floating space particles. Nitinol, the shape memory alloy, helps to adhere braces to teeth. And we should not

forget all of the things telemetry has done for us; such as, allowing automatic monitoring for alarm systems, oil rigs, chemical plants, cell phones, cameras, remote radio broadcasts, and global positioning systems.

When most people wake up in the morning they will make something for breakfast, pack a lunch, check their email and grab their Ipod, cell phone or palm pilot. When they leave for work or school they will close the garage door, pop in a CD and even look up maps on a screen in their dash. All of this happens before even entering the technologically enhanced office or school, thanks to NASA.

Yet some people have the gall to not appreciate NASA and ask, "What has NASA done for me?" Well, the Tempur-Pedic bed you woke up on, the Tephlon coated pan you scrambled your eggs in and the microwave you reheated your coffee in are direct results from products invented by NASA. DuPont makes many of our daily used household products such as Ziploc bags, refrigerants, oven mitts, bake ware, inhalers, and toothbrushes to name very few of their products that were either derived from or used within the space exploration programs. Even Velcro was first used in the space shuttle and may be used to help save the current space expedition.

Without NASA your cable would not come in digital or satellite nor would you be able to check the weather across the country. Your email would never work and your cell phone would be pointless. The remote would not lower your garage door, your CD would not hold more than a song or two and your advanced never-get-lost system would never have been created. Your sandwich would be stale by lunchtime, your soda would be in a cup and your insulated lunch bag would be brown and paper. We haven't even gotten through the day and I think I have made my point. What has NASA done for you? Must you really ask?

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Ann Coulter continues her campaign against Supreme Court nominee John Roberts.
She still thinks people don't know enough about him, and he's probably going to turn out to be a liberal.

This is progress: President Bush actually admitted in a speech that illegal aliens are sneaking into this country and something should be done about it.  However, that's about as far as he went.

The Democratic Party, which views Hillary Clinton as their best hope to retake the White House in 2008, had better start making some backup plans.  A poll shows both John McCain and Rudy Guiliani beating The Hildabeast.  The Poodle also comes up short again.

The ACLU is once again doing its important work.  And what case have they taken up to flex their Constitutional muscle?  A 14-year-old kid who was expelled for school after posting rap lyrics on the Internet threatening to shoot up his school.  Perhaps the ACLU could focus on real rights being taken away, like private property rights.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg has figured out what many have been saying for oh, about 5 years: the Democrats don't stand for anything.  They'll have to work on that.

Air America, which borrowed $1 million from a group that helps poor children, now says those kids will have to wait to get paid.  And to think most radio networks get their money from advertisers!

Did you know that if you have a landline telephone, you're paying a 3% tax that was imposed 107 years ago to fund the Spanish-American war?  The push is on to get rid of it.  This is the kind of hidden tax the Fairtax could do away with.

Way off in the wilderness, deep in a galaxy far, far, away, there exists a lone Democrat who is calling for real Social Security reform.  Like President Bush, however, he is being ignored by the Democrats in Congress.  Former Congressman Tim Penny explains.

The media was pushing for the Democrat to win in the special Congressional election in Ohio and when he didn't, they were mightily disappointed.  The Media Research Center reports.

Al Sharpton is saying that the Democratic party takes blacks for granted.  Larry Elder wonders what this means...will Sharpton perhaps consider supporting a Republican?  Probably not.

Did Bill Frist somehow make a mistake in switching his position on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research?  Hardly, says George Will.

Hey, look. There are a bunch of Yahoo groups discussing the FairTax.
