WHAT THE HELL'S THE PROBLEM WITH THE ACLU?

Can you believe this story?  The ACLU has filed a lawsuit to stop the random searches of bags on New York City subways and busses.  The ACLU says that the next thing we know they'll be profiling!  Hell, they should be profiling?  Can't you imagine the laughs we get from Arab terrorists when they see American security officers searching blue-haired old ladies while some Middle Eastern type slips by in the background?  The Mayor has said there will be zero tolerance for racial profiling, and the cops have been ordered to do only random searches. This position is almost as absurd as the ACLU's.

Does anybody like having their bags searched?  Nope. Is it a hassle?  Absolutely.  And so yesterday, the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit to stop it.  Their contention is that the policy violates the Constitution's prohibition against unlawful search and seizure.

The New York subways are public transportation. They are owned by the people of New York.  The people of New York have every right to set standards for those who want to ride, and those standards can be that the rider must submit to a search of all bags before entering.  It's the height of absurdity to suggest that it is somehow a violation of civil rights to have your bag searched before you enter public transportation ---- especially when each and every one of us, including the members of the ACLU --- know that there are people out there who want to put bombs into bags and carry them onto our public transportation systems.

Perhaps at this point we can say that there's reason to suggest that the ACLU just isn't on our side in the War on Terror.  I don't throw around the "anti-American" label as some do, but when you file a lawsuit to prevent law enforcement from searching bags when we all know that those bags may contain bombs .... well, you're going to create some doubts.  Right now I'm wondering just who's side the ACLU is on.

But back to this profiling thing.  I used to say that people will die because of political correctness.  Well, it's probably safe to say now that people have died.  Mayor Bloomberg's position defies logic.  What is so hard about actually pursuing terrorism suspects based on a description of that suspect?  We know what they look like.  Every terrorist in recent years that has attacked America and killed Americans has been of Middle Eastern descent.  Why then are we bothering searching little old ladies?  Because it's politically correct, that's why.  And in the year 2005, as we continue fighting World War IV, political correctness has deadly consequences.

Sadly, one of these days, an Islamic terrorist is going to set off a suicide bomb somewhere in the United States, and he will not have been stopped and searched out of fear of offending someone. Too bad.

Al-QAEDA RATTLES ITS SABRE

Osama Bin Laden's messenger boy slithered out from under his rock yesterday and broadcast a little video on Al-Jazeera, which was promptly picked up by every media outlet around the world.  In it, Ayman al-Zawahri had this to say: "What you have seen, O Americans, in New York and Washington and the losses you are having in Afghanistan and Iraq, in spite of all the media blackout, are only the losses of the initial clashes.  If you continue the same policy of aggression against Muslims, God willing, you will see the horror that will make you forget what you had seen in Vietnam."  So why is this worth pointing out?

The reason is simple.  With the exception of the "God willing" part, this could have been said by anyone in the Democratic leadership.  How many times have we heard from the left that Iraq is another Vietnam?  That we are losing the war there?  You may have heard this Islamic murderer on TV preaching his hate, but you would have no problem closing your eyes and pretending you were listening to Howard Dean.  Or Teddy Kennedy.  Or Nancy Pelosi.

Bush's response?  We're not leaving Iraq and we're going to keep fighting the killers.  A new poll shows Bush's handling of the war has dropped to 38%.  What that poll really shows is that 62% want to throw in the towel.  Give in to the Islamic terrorist thugs.  Cut and run.  Give up.  That's when Iraq will become another Vietnam...when we just walk out.  But that's what a lot of people want.  Good for Bush for resisting the call.

And you also have to wonder just why al-Qaeda gets so much play in the media when they release a tape like this.  They could just ignore it.  Media outlets could just announce that they don't intend to give any free publicity to terrorist organizations.  And just where does Al-Jazeera get those tapes?

JEWISH TERRORISM

Yesterday a Jewish terrorist opened fire on a bus full of Arabs in Gaza.  He killed four Arabs before a crowd grabbed him and lynched him.  First --- no problem whatsoever that the Arabs lynched this goon.  That's what he deserved.  I do have a problem with these so-called "Palestinians" expressing such outrage over this attack.  Why is it so fine when they kill Jews in terrorists attacks, and only an outrage when a radical Jew kills Arabs?   Just wondering.

ROBERT NOVAK LOSES IT

Yesterday on CNN's 'Inside Edition,' Robert Novak and James Carville were appearing to talk about Florida's Senate campaign.  Novak was talking about Katharine Harris, and Carville kept interrupting.  Nothing unusual there. Then the following exchange took place:

NOVAK: A couple of points here: The first place, don't be too sure she's going to lose. All the establishment's against her and I've seen these Republican -- anti-establishment candidates who do pretty well. Ronald Reagan, I guarantee you that the establishment wasn't for him. We just elected a senator from Oklahoma, Senator Tom Coburn, everybody in the establishment was against him. She might get elected -- So, wait. Just let me finish what I'm going to say, James. Please, I know you hate to hear me, but you have...

CARVILLE: He's got to show these right wingers that he's got backbone. It's why the Wall Street Journal editorial page is watching you. Show them you're tough.

NOVAK: Well, I think that's bull___t. And I hate that. Just let it go.

And with that, Novak got up, yanked off the microphone, threw it down and walked off the set.  CNN has told him to take a little time off.  It's kind of interesting to watch the video (see the reading assignments if you missed it) and see how Carville and the moderator just carried on as if what had happened didn't happen at all.

Now that's entertainment.

WHAT IS THE NEW YORK TIMES UP TO?

The New York Times is trying to find a way to un-seal the adoption records for Supreme Court nominee's John Roberts two children.  Why?  Of what possible relevance would those adoption records be?  Here are a few suggestions.  The Times wants to show that Roberts moved ahead of other deserving parents in the baby line.  Or maybe the Times wants to show that Roberts paid for a baby ... paid some woman to have a baby for him and his wife.  Maybe the Times can use this to promote the idea that Roberts is anti-abortion.  Figure it our for yourself ... and then ask yourself if the Times would be trying to open these records if the nominee was a liberal.

FAIRTAX NEWS

Huge turn-out at Neal's first book signing in Atlanta 8/4/05 [more photos]

Congressman John Linder and I attended our first book signing for The FairTax Book at the Barnes & Noble in the Buckhead district of Atlanta.  The crowd started gathering two hours before the signing ... and needless to say, the evening was a huge success.  Today we have a FairTax rally immediately following the program in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta.

It was interesting to see so many young people in line buying the book, and it was also interesting to note that about one-third of the people had purchased more than one book.  Many were bought to be sent to relatives ... and many are on the way to elected officials.

One lady mentioned that while President Bush was visiting Atlanta a few weeks ago she managed to get a tour of Air Force One.  There, on the president's desk, was a copy of The FairTax Book.  Now ... wonder if he's actually read it?  Wouldn't it be nice if he would make a walk to Marine One with a copy in his hand?

By the way ... a Marine came through the line, just four days back from Iraq.  I asked him what we could be doing over there that we're not doing.  His answer was immediate:  "Keep the media out."  He told us that what he sees on television here bears no real resemblance to what is actually going on over there.  Interesting.

We will be posting some pictures from Neal's book signings. If you took some you'd like to share, email them to boortzwebwench@gmail.com. Please include when & where and your name or nick if you want credit.

As of this morning there are about 120 reviews of The FairTax Book on Amazon.com.  Here are just a few:

Some Positive Reviews

  • I have to admit the idea of reading a book on tax reform probably wouldn't have appealed to me a few months ago. But after hearing Neal Boortz talk about the FairTax idea on his radio show, I couldn't help but get excited. After reading this book, I'm thrilled! Boortz and Linder have successfully taken a potentially confusing idea and boiled it down to its simplest components which anyone with half a brain can understand if they take the time to carefully read the book and consider what it has to say. This book takes the time to walk you through the history of our current hideous income tax system so that by the time you get to the chapters introducing the FairTax, you're ravenous for what it has to offer: Taking home your entire paycheck every month...financial privacy from the federal government...virtually no change in the price of goods and services from what they are today...tax-free investments...growing the economy at record rates... You'll put down this book (give it to a friend or family member) and immediately grab a piece of paper to write your Congressmen!

  • WOW what a book. Neal & John did a fantastic job. I enjoyed reading a book about TAXES??? Very informative read. I have already contacted my Congressman, Have YOU?? It is obvious the naysayers have an ax to grind. Too bad they were not smart enough to READ the book first. Do yourself a favor, buy & read this book. You WILL learn a lot. BTW, the reviews are a great read themselves.

  • This plan is superior to the STEVEN FORBES plan of flat tax. The plan is based on simple everyday consumption of goods and services while removing the hidden "embedded" taxes we all are forced to pay along with the oppressive income, death and gift taxes. It wont interfere with state or local taxes either.  The opponents of this plan either dont understand it fully or have a vested interest in keeping things just as they are. One thing is certain, wage earners and millionares alike have a brighter future with this well-heeled replacement for the current insane tax code!

  • I hope it does but I doubt it. Like Dick Armey said, "Demagoguery Defeats Data". And the Socialists are experts at it.

  • Boring subject made very easy to read in a concise, compact book. And to think Boortz is an attorney - who'd'a thunk it? Not a single wherefor, heretofore, whereas in the whole book. Especially good were the great examples and entertaining comments and remarks by Boortz. Even those educated in our public school systems won't have problems following along. Not only will you learn about the Fair Tax, but, more importantly, you'll learn just how much the Imperial Federal Government takes from us - you and I - through skillful use of euphemisims and hidden, falsely name laws, regulations and bills.Thank you Boortz and Rep. Linder for two hours of pleasuarble and entertaining reading. Hope this educates enough people to bring a new system to the masses.

And Some People Who Haven't Read The Book

  • Unfortunately, that 23 percent tax is actually a 30 percent tax, that they are trying to slip under your nose. An item that currently costs $1 would cost $1.30 (0.3/1.3=0.23). In reality, in order to raise the revenue necessary to finance the current spending of our government, the tax rate would need to be more in the 46% range. Add to that, the fact that this is effectively an increase on tax on the elderly, homeowners and all but the rich, and you have an economical and politically unfeasible plan. I'm not a fan of the current system's complications, but the national sales tax is not a wise alternative. But like I said, it's nice in theory.

Well, obliviously this reviewer didn't read the book.  This 30% bit is fully addressed in the book, and you will quickly learn that a $1.00 item will still cost about $1.00 after the FairTax with the tax included in the price!  It seems that some people just insist on slamming the FairTax plan, no matter what the facts are.

AND HOW ARE THINGS DOING WITH "TARNISHED?"

For those of you who don't know the story:  Yesterday on the show we got a phone call from Phillip.  Phillip, it turns out, is Phillip Hurst, a behavioral psychologist who co-wrote the novel "Tarnished."  It seems he had a book signing for his book at a Barnes & Noble on Wednesday night, and was dismayed to find that he sat there while watching people line up to buy one, two, three copies of The FairTax Book.  While Phillip was on the line we checked the status of his book on Amazon.com.  He ranked 518,600.  So ... being the charitable type of person that I am ... I told Phillip that we were going to post a link to his book page on Amazon.com and try to help him sell a few books.

OK ... so how did it work.  By the end of the program yesterday  Tarnished was ranked in the 200s on Amazon.com.  Then ... Amazon ran out of books.  This morning Amazon is referring inquiries to other sources with books to sell.  So ... maybe Phillip feels a bit better about his experience on Wednesday.
