FREE PRESS?

This morning most Americans got their news from radio.  This evening most Americans will get their news from television.  Think about this now.  In this "free" country which is supposed to protect freedom of the press, the majority of Americans get their news from agencies licensed by the government.

Carrie, the former Neal Boortz Show intern who is now in law school, sent me an email last night containing an excerpt of the Supreme Court's ruling in Red Lion Broadcasting v. FCC:

"Congress unquestionable has the power to grant and deny [broadcasting] licenses and to eliminate existing [radio] stations."

"Because of the scarcity of radio frequencies, the Government is permitted to put restraints on licensees in favor of others whose views should be expressed on this unique medium."

So .. how do you feel about freedom of the press now?

What should become of the FCC?  It should have one role, and only one role.  The FCC should protect broadcaster's property rights and their broadcast frequencies.  That's it.  No licenses, no license renewals, no oversight at all.  Let the free market ... let freedom prevail.

Oh .. and don't give me this nonsense about "the public's airwaves."  Think about what would have happened to the concept of property ownership if someone had come up with the concept of "the public's lands."  This whole "public's airwaves" is nothing less than an excuse for government control.  The first job of any despot is to control the broadcasting.  Think about it.

DAMNED CIVILIANS WITH GUNS

This one unfolded in Tyler, Texas yesterday.  David Hernandez Arroyo was in the middle of a bitter child support dispute.  As his ex-wife arrived at the courthouse yesterday Arroyo was waiting with an AK-47.  He killed her with is first shots and then aimed for and shot his son.  At that point Mark Wilson happened on the scene.  Mark Wilson is a civilian.  He wasn't a law enforcement officer. Mark Wilson did, however, have a gun on him.  Wilson started firing at Arroyo as Arroyo was trying to finish his son off.  Wilson was killed in the exchange.  Another civilian with a gun started firing at Arroyo, who ran to his pickup and fled.  Arroyo was cornered by police a short time later and killed.

Arroyo's son is alive today.  He's alive because a civilian with a gun intervened.  This is just one of the instances yesterday where a civilian with a gun saved either his life or someone else's.  You won't see most of these stories on the air.  The Tyler story will probably make it to the news because it is too sensational to be ignored.  Watch for the role of the civilian to be minimized.

Remember ... an armed society is a polite society.

CANADA'S FREE RIDE

Taking their cue from the Axis of Weasels, Canada has decided that it will not join the U.S. missile defense program.  The reason?  Apparently they're worried it might cause an international arms race.  Very interesting.  So they have decided not to protect their country from a rogue nuclear warhead for fear of making somebody else mad.  Actually, this is really just a continuation of Canada's long-standing defense policy.

What defense policy is that?  Very simple.  Just sit back and let the United States protect them.  Polls in Canada say the public opposes joining the missile defense program.  I wonder how they would feel were this very real scenario to occur.  A nuclear missile is launched by a terrorist from somewhere in the former Soviet Union.  Chechnya, for instance.   It is headed for Canada.  The United States has the power to intercept and stop the missile.  But wait...Canada isn't part of the program!  Would we shoot it down?  Of course we would.

We would protect Canada, just like we've been doing for years.  When asked if this decision now meant Canada relied on the U.S. for protection, the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister replied: "Would it have been otherwise?"

If Canada wants us to keep protecting them, perhaps we should start charging for the service.

Why did I immediately think of the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen [mp3]? -webwench

THE JEFF GANNON OBSESSION

There is now a letter floating around the Senate calling for a White House investigation into the reporting of James Guckert/Jeff Gannon.  Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has agreed to sign on, as has Teddy Kennedy and The Poodle.  This is beginning to get more than a bit ridiculous.

The complaints on the left about Gannon seem to be one or all of the following:

  • How did a reporter with an assumed name gain access to the White House?  Who knows...perhaps the same way all of the other reporters with assumed names gained access?  You know, as in through the front door?
  • What was a partisan, political journalist doing asking questions in the White House press corps?  I don't know...maybe the same thing the other partisan, political journalists in the press were doing...asking questions?
  • What was someone who moonlighted as a gay hooker doing in the White House press room?  Wait a minute...I thought the left were supposed to be the tolerant ones.  Sexual orientation shouldn't matter!  It certainly didn't matter when we found out that a gay prostitute was using Congressman Barney Frank's home as a base of operations.  And oh, by the way, shall we tear apart the private lives of the others in the room for comparison?

At best this is a story of minor interest ...certainly not a huge scandal.  The only reason Democrats and the mainstream media are keeping it going is because they honestly have nothing else to talk about.

Is it too late to open an investigation into Ted Kennedy's actions at Chappaquiddick?

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Here is the new website from David Horowitz that is causing so much anger to flow from the left.  Bookmark it ... a lot of good material will flow through these pages.

Is it possible that Hillary Clinton could be elected president of the United States?  David Limbaugh says he used to think not, but given her recent change in positions, he's not so sure.

Mona Charen looks at the case of Second Lt. Ilario Pantano and says that it's outrageous that someone who sacrificed so much to defend his country is now facing murder charges.

Thought he is responsible for President's Day, Kathleen Parker says George Washington is slowly becoming forgotten.  She has a reminder from the Mount Vernon.

So what was the highlight of President Bush's trip to Europe?  If you ask CBS, it was the protesters in Germany.  The Media Research Center reports.

Corporations are starting to apologize for their activities during the slave trade some 150 years ago, and Walter E. Williams calls them a bunch of weak-kneed corporate CEOs.  Not to be missed.

Is it time to have a woman president of the United States?  John McCaslin thinks so...and points to Condoleezza Rice as a good first choice.

Are illegal aliens just well-meaning hard workers who are just looking to make a living?  Cal Thomas says not anymore.....he says many are extremely dangerous and don't belong in this country.

Oliver North looks at a gathering threat down south
,...in the form of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.  He explains why not enough people are paying attention to this America-hating walking disaster.

During his tour of Europe, Bush even managed to turn the French Weasel around on Iraq.  Austin Bay says the Iraqi people who voted on January 30th had everything to do with that.

With health care costs skyrocketing, businesses are refusing to hire smokers.  What choice will people make...the job or the cigarette?
