TERRORIST ATTACK IN LONDON

Seven reported explosions in underground stations and other explosions on busses, perhaps as many as three. At the time I posted this note we only have two confirmed deaths.  Certainly that will go higher.  Causalities are known to be 90 or higher.

Terrorism?  Certainly, but who did it?  England, after all, has two terrorist problems.  The Irish Republican Army and those practitioners of the wonderful, peaceful religion of Islam.  Guesses?  The IRA usually gives advanced warnings of their attacks.  There is word from some Israeli official that Britain's Scotland Yard indicated that warnings were, in fact, received minutes before the explosions.  On the other hand we have some early statements from terrorist experts saying that this has all the earmarks of an Al Qaeda operation.  Then again, these explosions could be connected to the G8 summit currently underway to the North in Scotland.  Islamic terrorists aren't generally included in the list of morons protesting G8.

Helpful Hint
Flickr is the place to find pictures of breaking news. Just put a search term in "find a photo of" like g8 or bomb.

So ... all we have is speculation right now.  There does seem to be a similarity to these attacks and the attacks in Madrid, Spain a few years ago.  Those attacks came at the hands of Islamic radicals.  So, if that is the case, will the British react like the Spaniards.  Hopefully, no.

Continuing on the presumption -- certainly rebuttable -- that these attacks were brought to us by the religion of Islam. The amazing thing here is that there are actually people -- people who consider themselves to be intelligent -- who believe that if we would just leave the wonderful peaceful Muslims alone in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the rest of the Middle East to their own devices that everything would be OK.  They would be content to live their lives under their various Islamic jihad leaders without ever bothering the western non-Muslim world again.

G8 ANARCHIST PROTESTORS

Might this terrorist attack in London have been at the hands of the same bunch protesting the G8 summit in Scotland?  Much is being made in the media about these communists, socialists and anarchists who are trying to interrupt the G8 meeting. Anarchists ... a peculiar bunch these.  Several months ago the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran a feature on a local anarchist who had some experience protesting at G8 summits.  Do you want a little inside peek at the thought processes and mental state of these so-called anarchists?  Well ... our cuddly little Atlanta anarchist told the AJC that he liked to enter large homes under construction in the Atlanta area and pee in the bathtubs.  This apparently gave him a good deal of satisfaction.  So ... there you go.  The media is fawning over a bunch of protestors at the G8 summit who might well think that taking a whiz in someone's bathtub is a bold and courageous, not to mention intelligent, act of political dissention.

A HUGE "I TOLD YOU SO" FROM THE TALKMASTER

I have been telling you for a year now that sooner or later the left was going to try to use the courts to muzzle and shut down talk radio.  Well, it's happened.  It happened in Seattle, Washington.  Washington .. you remember Washington in the last election, don't you?  There were 3000 more votes cast than there were registered voters in the last election for Governor.  One candidate beat another by less than 150 votes.   A judge ruled the election was legitimate.  Oh well.

Here's what happened.  Washington recently enacted a 9.5-cent-per-gallon tax hike on gasoline.  Two talk show hosts on Seattle's KVI were promoting Initiative 912 for the next election ballot in Washington.  I-912 would repeal that gas tax hike.  The pro-tax crowd didn't like it one little bit that these two talk show hosts were speaking out against their tax hike, so they filed a complaint and went to the judge.   Last Friday Judge Christopher Wickham ruled that KVI must report the commercial value of any time these two talk show hosts spend talking about I-912 as an in-kind political contribution.  This, of course, shuts down these two hosts.  This effectively ends any conversation on  the matter on John Carlson's and Kirby Wilbur's talk show.

This is just the beginning.  Now that they have a success under their belts the left will move to expand their victory ... but timing will be crucial.  If I was planning strategy for the left on this one I would tell them to wait until just before the 2008 presidential election before they try to use the campaign finance reform act, and this Seattle precedent, to shut down political talk radio.  If they were to make their move any earlier they would run the risk of the Republican Congress passing some revisions to the campaign finance reform act to thwart their scheme.

And please ... just please ... don't tell me that the U.S. Supreme Court will rush in to protect First Amendment free speech rights here.  Which Supreme Court are you talking about?  The Supreme Court that ruled the campaign finance reform act constitutional in the first place?  The same Supreme Court that virtually destroyed the concept of private property rights just a few weeks ago?  That Supreme Court? Give me a break.

Now .. before we move on here, one reminder.  Though this ruling from Washington state was based on state campaign finance reform laws ... those laws are very much like the McCain Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act that  was passed by a Republican House of Representatives and a Republican Senate.  It was then signed into law by a Republican President.  This Washington decision will only embolden those who want to use McCain Feingold to shut down talk radio.  Aren't we all just so proud of our elected Republicans right now?

IS IT GONZALES?

Media speculation continues over who will be Bush's first pick for the Supreme Court. The conventional wisdom is that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will be the choice.  In fact, many Democrats are now convinced of that. But true to form, hypocrisy reigns supreme...because some who opposed Gonzales to be Attorney General are now saying he'd be just fine and dandy as a lifetime member of the United States Supreme Court.

None other than Democratic Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has been singing Gonzales' praises, saying "Alberto Gonzales is qualified. He's attorney general of the United States and a former Texas judge. But having said that he's qualified, I don't know if he'd have an easy way through."  Reid voted against Gonzales' nomination for attorney general. So why is Reid springing to his defense?  Simple...Gonzales is being attacked from the right, so Reid wants to look like the good guy to his buddies on the left.

Other Democrats are demanding the president listen to what they have to say about who he should pick.  They don't simply want to fulfill their Constitutional role....they want to Bush to do what they want.  So they use all of the activist judge code words like "open-minded, moderate, independent, etc."

Whoever it is, a lot of money is going to be wasted by people opposing Bush's choice.

HILLARY AND THE GARGOYLE

Kim Jong-Il, the mentally ill dictator of short stature up in North Korea, has been a thorn in the side of the United States for years.  Since he acquired nuclear weapons (thanks to the efforts of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton) he has been jumping up and down..demanding attention...and insisting the United States speak to him directly.

Unlike the Clinton administration and Madeline Albright, the Bush White House hasn't caved in to the extortion.  They have set up so-called six party talks between North Korea, the United States and other countries in the region.  This is being done to apply pressure to The Gargoyle to get him to give up his nuclear ambitions.

Well, now here comes Hillary Clinton.  Tuesday in an op-ed with fellow leftist Carl Levin, The Hildabeast made her proposal in the Washington Post of how she would deal with North Korea.   Her answer?  Give into the blackmail.  She wants to buy off The Gargoyle.

Her idea is to reward North Korea's behavior by giving them a massive aid package of economic assistance.  She holds up as a success the disastrous Clinton policy of dealing with North Korea, in which The Gargoyle broke his word almost immediately and started producing nuclear weapons anyway.

One of the many reasons why Hillary Rodham Clinton must be kept as far away from the Oval Office as possible.  After all, taken one step further, what would her Al-Qaeda policy be like? Send them an aid package?  That's what you get when you negotiate with terrorists.

SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS

Just for humanity's sake, someone had better put some liberals on a suicide watch if Karl Rove isn't named as the leak source in the Valerie Plame matter.

Why do some so-called pundits continue to say that the Democrats have no agenda?  Of course they haven an agenda.  Just for starters, may I remind you of socialized medicine?  Then there's guaranteed government bail-outs for pensions, and strengthening unions while weakening private sector employers.  No agenda?  That's like saying Ted Bundy had no agenda.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

When Sandra Day O'Connor announced her intent to resign from the Supreme Court, there was at least one person who wasn't impressed with her tenure. Ann Coulter calls O'Connor Reagan's biggest mistake.

Bush isn't caving into the Euro-weenies at the G8 summit.  He's once again slammed the door on the Kyoto treaty.  But there will be more billions in handouts for Africa.

More Kelo fallout: Senator Orrin Hatch has introduced a bill that would require local governments to provide fair compensation when they take land away from people.  In addition, it would provide for mediation.

John Bolton's nomination to be U.N. Ambassador is looking more and more like it's dead in the water.  On the one hand the White House doesn't want to cave into the Democrats, on the other hand, they wouldn't appear to mind if Bolton withdrew his nomination.  Too bad.

The Democrats have been waiting for the moment to trash George Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court for quiet some time.  Byron York says no one has been salivating longer than Senator Chuck Schumer.

Tony Blair and other European leaders want to send an extra $25 billion a year in aid to Africa.  But as James Glassman points out, the handouts haven't worked over the years, and may even hurt Africa's development.

Those on the right continue to be quite upset at George Bush for the nice things he's saying about Alberto Gonzales.  Robert Novak says Bush is the biggest obstacle to a conservative court.

Did you know that there was no federal ban on abortions before the Supreme Court created the Constitutional right to one? Words of wisdom from Thomas Sowell.

Were the Live 8 concerts the greatest event in the history of the world?  Not really, explains Jonah Goldberg...who also wonders just what the concerts accomplished.

Remember some months ago when the doom and gloom types in the media and on the left were predicting that the dollar would never recover? Well, as USA Today reports, the dollar has been on fire lately!
