ON VACATION

The Talkmaster is on vacation right now. I'm spending a few days in Massachusetts, ending up in Martha's Vineyard ... then heading south toward New York. Western Massachusetts is beautiful ... and rainy. But perhaps the most amazing thing about this state is that the people seem to treat their Senator, Ted Kennedy, somewhat seriously! I would be profoundly embarrassed to be represented by that cretin ... but apparently these folks seem to think he has some redeeming value .... at least in the Berkshires. Go figure.

In the meantime, the Boortz staff has free reign to submit any little notes and reading assignments they might like to during my week-long absence. If I send something in I'll be sure to sign it so you won't blame them.

On Saturday ... and this was completely unplanned ... I ended up at the home of Orange County Choppers. All this time I thought they were talking about Orange County, California! Mikey was signing autographs. No --- I didn't wait around ... but some pictures coming up before the end of the week.

And before I leave ... how about that Paul Begala. You heard him charge that the Republicans are trying to kill him, didn't you? Yeah ... speaking to a conference of liberal college students. A bit over the top, don't you think? No wonder he was such a valued Clinton advisor.

THE LATEST ON ROVE

The 'Get Karl Rove' jihad on the left and in the news media has appeared to flame out. Now that it was revealed that Rove first heard about Valerie Plame from another journalist, those in the Democratic party with at least one functioning brain cell have begun to do the revisionist backstroke.

But the left, always trolling for the latest 'gotcha,' may point to Time magazine journalist Matt Cooper's interviews on Meet The Press and CNN's Late Edition yesterday. The media seems to be running with Cooper's allegation that Rove was his only source on Valerie Plame. Let's take a look at the high points of what he said and debunk them one by one, shall we?

1.) Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby confirmed to Matt Cooper that Joe Wilson was sent to Niger at the behest of his wife, who worked at the CIA on WMD issues. That's the same thing Rove told him. BFD.

2.) Look at what Cooper said exactly: "After that conversation, I knew that she worked at the CIA, and worked on WMD issues. But as I made clear to the grand jury, I'm certain Rove never used her exact name and certainly never indicated she had a covert status." Once again, Rove never used her name and didn't know she had covert status. Yawn.

3.) So is Libby the source? Nope. All he gave Cooper was the same information Rove did. If the special prosecutor told Rove's lawyer he's not a target, then Libby isn't either.

So all in all, despite Matt Cooper's little media tour, nothing has changed. There's nothing new. And once again, the mainstream media is missing this story by a mile. Right now, Judith Miller of the New York Times is sitting in jail, protecting a source in the Valerie Plame case. But such is the left's blind lust to get Karl Rove and bash all things related to the Bush administration, they can't see what they're missing. Who is Judith Miller protecting? Why is she in jail?

The answer to that is where the point of this entire investigation lies.

DON'T FORGET JOE WILSON

It's been said in the Plamegate fiasco that all roads lead back to her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson. That's absolutely the case...in this entire affair, Valerie Plame's significant other is the common thread. So who is Joe Wilson?

He was the ambassador in Iraq during the first Gulf War. He is a partisan Democrat. His wife sent him to Africa to investigate the claims that Saddam Hussein sought to acquire yellowcake uranium from that country. Joe Wilson came back and concluded that Iraq did not try to buy the yellowcake uranium. Although Saddam Hussein did get it from somewhere, because he had 500 tons of it already (see today's reading assignments.)

At that point, what did Joe Wilson do? As the one supposedly worried about national security, secrecy and the integrity of the CIA? He wrote an op-ed in the New York Times, talking about the whole thing. So much for secrecy. Joe Wilson also lied and said the Vice President sent him to Africa. Dick Cheney doesn't even know Joe Wilson.

So we know that Joe Wilson is a Bush-basher, partisan liberal Democrat and a liar. He's also selling a book that he's written. Those are facts that cannot be disputed. Yet in all of this, the mainstream media and the left is hitching their wagons to Wilson as if he's the victim here and as if his intentions are entirely pure.

Don't be so sure on that one. Wilson is a talker. Perhaps he was Judith Miller's source and he outed his own wife? Stranger things have happened.

DEMOCRATS AND NATIONAL SECURITY

The one thing we've heard over and over again from the Democrats regarding Karl Rove is how much they're concerned about national security. Some want Rove's security clearance pulled, others want him fired. We can't have people outing CIA agents, they tell us. Notice a pattern here?

Yup...all of a sudden the left is concerned about national security. But let's go back to just one year ago. Remember Sandy Berger? He was President Clinton's National Security Adviser. He was investigated and ultimately pled guilty to the unauthorized removal of classified material from the National Archives.

While the 9/11 commission was investigating the attacks on our country, Sandy Berger walked into the National Archives and stuffed documents into his pants, his coat and his socks and stole them. What was in those documents? We'll never know, because Berger admitted to destroying three of the documents.

Anyway, the point in all of this is where was the outrage on the part of the left when Sandy "Pants" Berger was doing his little five-finger-discount routine on highly classified documents? If you recall, the media similarly ignored the story...downplaying and wiping it off the front page within a couple days.

But when it comes to Karl Rove, they're oh-so-concerned about national security. But you see, Rove is a Republican and Berger is a Democrat. And as such, the media template applies: any news that's bad for a Republican is top story and front page. Any news that's bad for a Democrat...well, isn't really news at all.

At least they're consistent.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Here's the real question in the Valerie Plame case: what is the special prosecutor looking for?  If Plame really wasn't even a covert agent, and if Rove's not the target, where is all of this going?  Jack Kelly attempts to answer the question.

Mark Steyn nails it...since Valerie Plame wasn't a covert agent, somebody can only leak her name in much the same way you could leak, for instance, the person running the checkout stand at Home Depot.

With the allegations against Karl Rove unraveling, some of the smarter Democrats are starting to backtrack.  Yes, that's right, there just may be such a thing as a "smarter" Democrat.

The Democratic plan, which calls for firing Karl Rove, indicting him and throwing him into federal prison has one fatal flaw: Joe Wilson.  Joel Mowbray says the left is pinning their hopes on a known liar.

Did you know that Saddam Hussein had 500 tons of yellowcake uranium when the United States invaded Iraq?  The media conveniently ignores that fact, since after all, Joe Wilson didn't find any in Africa.

An Islamic terrorist was forced to wear a bra at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  Naturally, since there's lingerie involved and he wasn't invited, Ted Kennedy wants to investigate.

The media is coming unglued in their coverage of Karl Rove.  At the head of the media bias class is CBS, reports The Media Research Center.

Social Security reform has been left for dead, but Robert Novak reports there are some efforts in the House to get something done.

Suzanne Fields revisits the Live 8 concert and points out that it was pretty much all a grand waste of time.  She points out an African economist that actually wants to stop aid to Africa.

The media and Democrats never hesitated to publicly rake the Bush administration over the coals about the exploding deficit, but now they're strangely quiet as it shrinks.  Michael Barone says Bush is well on his way to making his deficit promise.

Morning Sickness: Our friend Psycho brings us this gem. Man dies after having sex with a horse. Now, sex with farm animals isn't unheard of, but there's something a little different about this story. We'll let you figure it out rather than pointing it out to you.
