NEAL CHECKS IN

The Talkmaster here ... checking in. Last day in the Berkshires. Tomorrow we head to Martha's Vineyard. Staying in Edgartown. I'll be sure to get a picture of me standing on Teddy Kennedy's own personal bridge. There I'll say a quick prayer for Mary Jo Kopechne .. recognizing that she might very well have saved America from a Ted Kennedy presidency ... in other words, she may very well have saved America.

Now ... if you don't do anything else today, get your paws on yesterday's (Tuesday's) edition of The Wall Street Journal. There you will find an article by Caleb Carr entitled "The Smell of Fear." Car details just why the Islamic terrorists chose to attack England when they did ... the smelled fear and surrender. This article is tremendous .. incredible ... and a must-read. The winsome web-wench will try to get a link to it .. but it may only be found on-line in the subscription Wall Street Journal website."

Have fun .... Back with you live on Monday.

Now ... let's see what my staff is up to today. I take no responsibility for anything posted after this period.

Period.

BUSH PICKS ROBERTS

The early word from the Hill is that President Bush's pick for the Supreme Court is that he'll probably be confirmed. He was confirmed for the DC Circuit just 2 years ago, by a vote of 99-0 in the Senate. Not bad. So what is there to make of the choice?

It's a good one, for several reasons. One, Bush didn't cave into the political correctness Gods and choose a woman. For weeks, it's been reported that because Sandra Day O'Connor was retiring and she was the first woman on the court, obviously the president would have to pick another woman. What a pant load. He should do what he did: pick the person who is most qualified, whether it be a man, woman, black, white, Hispanic, whatever. It's also worth noting that he chose someone at least fairly young at 50, to ensure a long tenure.

But not all is wine and roses. Extremist groups on the left and the abortocentrists on the right have been in a drought for 10 years. There hasn't been a Supreme Court nomination since 1994. They're not just going to stand idly by on this one and not say anything. A liberal justice could possibly be replaced by a conservative one. Don't expect the ultra-leftists to stay mum.

Also, expect full-out character assassination. It goes without saying that the White House has vetted John Roberts with a fine tooth comb. But what about his personal life? Any old girlfriends? There will be absolutely no limits to how far the left will go to smear the nominee and deny him a place on the bench. Remember Clarence Thomas and the Coke can?

Bush wants Roberts on the bench when the court's new term starts in October. Congress is about to have their one month recess. Let the games begin.

LITTLE CHUCKY SCHUMER SPEAKS OUT

It didn't take long after Bush's announcement of his choice for the Senate's reigning media whore to run down to the Senate gallery and grab a microphone and start making demands. Schumer said he didn't vote for Roberts for the DC Court of Appeals because he didn't answer some questions Chucky wanted answered. Then, the junior (in stature) Senator from New York said this:

"The burden is on a nominee to the Supreme Court to prove that he is worthy, not on the Senate to prove that he is unworthy."

How's that for being guilty until proven innocent? But that's how the left views this. In their twisted little world, they should get to pick the nominee for the court. They want to take 'advise and consent' to a whole new level. Also, such is their hatred for George Bush, they will do everything in their power to deny him his choice for the bench.

It will be interesting to see what happens. If Schumer and his buddies in the Democratic party smell blood, that is if they realize they have 40 votes against Roberts, you can bet they'll filibuster. All these nice things they're saying about keeping their powder dry, giving the nominee a fair hearing and all of that...you can forget it.

The left's last dying grasp on power in Washington D.C. is the United States Supreme Court, which they view as a lawmaking branch of government. Replacing Sandra Day O'Connor with John Roberts represents a loss of that power.

No matter what they say now, they're not going to go quietly.

WHAT THIS IS REALLY ABOUT

So what do most of the Democrats and many of the interest groups really care about when it comes a Supreme Court nominee? Is it the rule of law, interpreting the Constitution, not legislating from the bench? How they might have voted on the Kelo Vs. New London, Connecticut disgrace? For the extremist whack jobs, it all comes down to one thing and one thing only: abortion.

Whether for or against it, those on the extreme fringe could care less what Roberts thinks about anything else. Only his opinion on abortion and Roe vs. Wade should be used as the litmus test to confirm or reject his nomination. As a result, you can expect the leftist members of the Senate Judiciary Committee like Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy, Dick Durbin and Joe Biden to constantly be angling for his stand on abortion.

Roberts' latest statements indicate that he believes Roe Vs. Wade is the settled law of the land, and he would do nothing to overturn it. Doesn't matter one bit what he's said in the past. All that matters is what they think he believes now.

Watch for the small-minded, single issue types when the hearings start. They'll be there (on the Democratic side of the committee.)

KARL WHO?

Notice how fast the Valerie Plame controversy evaporated from the mainstream media? Where is the Democratic outrage now? Apparently they've moved on to more important things. Which just goes to show you how unimportant and manufactured the Rove-bashing was.

By the way, does anyone know why Judith Miller is still in jail?
