THE SOLUTION TO THE ALTERNATIVE MINIMUM TAX

If you take a peak at the front page of today's edition of USA Today you will see a story about the dreaded alternative minimum tax. Please --- read the story. The tax reform panel is going to recommend that this tax be repealed. Trouble is, it will mean loss revenues of over one trillion dollars over the next ten years. Now we all know that cutting government spending is out of the question .... so the only solution will be to raise taxes elsewhere. Right? In fact, commission chairman Connie Mack (R-Florida) said that options include raising other tax rates or eliminating various tax exemptions and deductions. Both avenues, of course, constitute tax increases.

There is another solution --- the FairTax. H.R. 25, The FairTax Bill, repeals the alternative minimum tax ... along with the income tax, payroll taxes, death taxes, corporate income taxes .... and much more. This problem can be solved without raising taxes or eliminating exemptions and deductions. Just get the FairTax enacted --- AMT gone --- problem solved.

Remember, The FairTax Book hits the bookstores one week from next Tuesday. If you want to order from Amazon.com I'm going to ask you to hold off until Monday ... then we'll put a banner here that you can use to order the book for delivery next week. You'll have the book by Wednesday, August 3rd.

NEW MEMO, SAME QUESTIONS

Here we go again. With Congress headed for recess and the left adopting a ho-hum "wait and see" attitude toward Bush's nominee for the Supreme Court, the mainstream media finds itself with a little time on its hands. What's their next Bush-bashing adventure going to consist of?

Naturally, it's right back to the non-story known as Plamegate, or "The Valerie Plame Affair." And it starts today with a report in the Washington Post, being picked up by other media outlets. To save you the time, here's the basic gist of the whole thing:

1.) A classified State Department memo contained information about CIA employee Valerie Plame and it was marked "secret." The administration had possession of this memo, so they should have known Valerie Plame's identity was supposed to have been kept secret. Gotcha!

2.) Not so fast. The memo did not describe Valerie Plame's status as covert and she is only mentioned in two sentences of the memo. The memo was first given to Colin Powell as he headed to Africa in 2003 with President Bush, 7 days before Plame was "outed" in the Novak column.

Now the media is going to play this up for all its worth in the next couple days. It's the smoking gun to nail the Bush administration to the wall! Well, not really. For a couple reasons. First, if Valerie Plame wasn't a covert agent, meaning she wasn't in the field sometime in the previous 5 years, then no law was broken. If that's the case, and all indications are that it is, then that's where the investigation ends.

Second, supposedly Valerie Plame's neighbors knew she worked at the CIA. Sounds like an open secret to me. How on Earth can anyone be prosecuted for repeating an open secret?

SO WHERE'S ALL THIS GOING?

The more time Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald keeps spending on this, the more it looks like either A.) a political witch hunt or B.) he's going after something or someone nobody knows about.

Ultimately the press and the left are out for Karl Rove. But Rove has testified before the grand jury that he first heard of Plame's name from Robert Novak. Where did Novak get it? Does anybody care anymore? This is turning into the biggest non-story of our time.

At some point, Fitzgerald will hold a press conference and announce that either somebody has been indicted or that no crime was committed. Either way, expect the Democrats to be incredibly disappointed. No matter what he does, the left will put on their tinfoil hats and scream "cover up!"

Oh...and one more thing. Does anybody know why Judith Miller is in jail?

AND WHAT ABOUT THE CIA

There's a story out this morning that 11 former CIA officers are coming to Valerie Plame's defense. They sent a letter to Congress complaining about the RNC's assertion that Valerie Plame wasn't a covert agent and therefore wasn't covered under the 1982 statue Rove and others are accused of violating. It read, in part:

"Intelligence officers should not be used as political footballs. In the case of Valerie Plame, she still works for the CIA and is not in a position to publicly defend her reputation and honor."

This, of course, is a complete joke. Never forget that the only reason anybody cares about Valerie Plame is that her blowhard husband, leftist Joe Wilson, went on a trip to Africa at the behest of the CIA and then publicly started smearing the Bush administration in his op-ed. He's also profiting from this in a book he's written. Yet he gets a huge pass from the mainstream media. Figures.

The CIA is a large government bureaucracy. It's probably a safe bet that quite a few people who work there don't like the Bush administration and didn't vote for the president.

Heather's Corner:

God Bless the U.S.A.

Most of us love and respect our troops in the service. The rest of us are slurping up whatever the media dishes out, thinking that there just can't be very many good things happening across the seas right now. It's understandable to think that way. All we ever hear is " 1 soldier killed, 2 wounded" or " Mosque attack prompts fear" and the like.

If our troops were not making any positive changes, don't you think they would have given up by now? The goal was never to lose as many troops as we could. Do you people really think our Commander in Chief would allow our volunteering soldiers to sacrifice their lives as so many of the suicide bombers have done? No. If the past 14+ years had been a failure, then certainly people would have lost their passion for their country and the "draft" (Democrats are the only one to have ever proposed a draft, 3 times) certainly would have played out by now.

We need to set the record straight and start flooding the news outlets with instances of hopes and freedoms that our troops are making sacrificing for. Many others need to follow suit.

Let me begin by saying that not all of the "Hollywood parrots " sit on their air-conditioned sets complaining about our troops who selflessly serve for their freedom as well as those in other countries. When they are not in support, the cause is in vain, as well as those lives lost. The people against this are ingrates of the liberties fought and sacrificed for not only in this war but all parts that lead up to it.

Denzel Washington is a great example of the supportive Hollywood-type. While it is true that he donated money to help build a Fisher House, many reports say that it was "merely substantial."

Take a look at these children . They hardly look mad at the United States' efforts. In fact, many learn a few English words; the most common being "Thank you USA ."

Schools, hospitals and churches are being built in Iraq. Whether they are actually being built by the troops or because the troops have protected them from otherwise certain persecution by Sadman Insane or other radical terrorist groups, these facilities are springing up everywhere.

If the media would report only a half of the positive outcomes of this battle, those polls we like to rely on so much would certainly point heavier on the side of support for our troops.

I have spent a week searching common media outlets for "troop-praise" and I came up short. Yet the bloggers have it right and gave me the best sources for " troop-love." Citing bloggers is not very journalistic, but many of them speak from first hand experiences. It is sad that many people see them as opinions rather than news-worthy articles.

I, too, am ready for my friends and family to come home ; possibly for selfish reasons, as I am also scared they may not make it home alive. But I respect those that I love for being brave enough to face the evil, which I am not brave enough to take on myself. I am grateful for their courage, determination and valor.

The Black-Eyed Peas asked in 2003, "Where's the love ya'll ?" It is in no way a troop supporting song, but it certainly asks a viable question within its leading question. If the world was full of love and tolerance there might be less suffering.  We must remember that it is for the love of the country and love of the other countries (not this hyped-up power) that made our family and friends want to stand and support the people whom otherwise would not be able to do so for themselves. Why is tolerance demanded for everything and everyone, except that which has any moral or ethical value?

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

READING ASSIGNMENTS

John Roberts is being universally praised on the right as a good choice for the U.S. Supreme Court.  No way, says Ann Coulter.  Her reason: there's just not enough on the record to be able to know how he'll rule on certain issues.  She calls him another Souter.

Most think John Roberts is a conservative nominee, and that has the media worried.  They're also upset that a woman was not picked.  The Media Research Center reports.

Larry Elder revisits the Kelo vs. New London, Connecticut decision
and its disastrous consequences.  How often is someone's property taken away by the government?  More often than you think.

Valerie Plame has been portrayed in the media and by the Democrats and her husband as a victim.  Don't believe it, says Mark Levin.  She waded into the political swamp when she recruited her husband to go to Africa.

The billions of dollars of our money that politicians are pouring into building stadiums is a bad idea, but there seems to be no end in sight.  John Stossel has more.

The U.S. Border Patrol, previously opposed to the idea of The Minutemen, seems to be warming to the idea.  Perhaps a volunteer border patrol is in order, maybe even with a little training, says the Chief.  Good idea.

The left is starting to twist the meaning of the word "activist judge" and Thomas Sowell points out the sleight of hand.  Liberals think any judge who would dare strike down any act of Congress is an activist.  Sowell says that's what they're supposed to do.

Robert Novak goes behind the scenes and exposes the politics of public broadcasting, especially the efforts to bring a little balance to PBS.

The double standard being applied over Ed Klein's Hillary book is incredible. Brent Bozell says the Mainstream Media never hesitated to publish unsubstantiated material in the past.

Like Ann Coulter, not everyone is pleased with the John Roberts choice for the U.S. Supreme Court.  Ben Shapiro weighs in with his discontent.
