SOME TV STATION MANAGERS SHOULD BE ASHAMED

Do you remember last Veteran's Day?  ABC was going to run Saving Private Ryan in prime time.  Not only were they going to run it, but they were going to run it complete with the raw language.  Right here in Atlanta our heritage ABC affiliate, WSB Television, decided not to air the broadcast.  The management was afraid the FCC would fine them for the language.  I guess these cowering TV execs wanted Spielberg to edit the dialogue so that soldiers wounded on the beaches of Normandy would yell "Golly!  I'm hit!"

Well the FCC has finally been heard on the issue.  Saving Private Ryan was not indecent and there will be no FCC actions against the stations with strong and principled management that ran the showing unedited.  Let see if some of these TV executives that dishonored our Vets by refusing to run this movie have the courage to step up and apologize to their audiences today.

MAKE NO MISTAKE ... FREEDOM IS SPREADING IN THE MIDDLE EAST

When President George Bush stood up at his inauguration speech in January and proclaimed his support for freedom and democracy around the world, his critics sneered. Democracy was not possible, whined the left. Arab countries? Just a bunch of tribes with flags! They could never self-govern. Bush wasn't being realistic, we were told. What was he going to do....invade every country that was not a democracy?

Well, totalitarian regimes continue to fall like dominoes in the Middle East. Lebanon's Syrian puppet prime minister and his cabinet quit yesterday, yielding to the thousands of protesters parked outside that were demanding democracy. They are also demanding that Syria get out of their country. Just take a look at some of the quotes from the demonstrators: "I love America. Tell Bush to come here. Thank him, thank Chirac (hey, nobody's perfect.) This is a great day for all Arab people." But wait...I thought they all hated us?

It's not just Lebanon.  There are going to be multi-party  elections in Egypt.  Not full-blown elections, but at least it's a start.  Saudi Arabian leaders are also considering some electoral processes.  Egyptians, Syrians, Iranians, Lebanese, Saudis .. they all want a serving of what Afghanistan and Iraq are having.

Look for the media to try and minimize this as much as possible. After all, it doesn't fit the Bush-bashing template. But make no mistake: Arab dictators throughout the Middle East have been served notice: liberty is on the march.

IN THE MEANTIME ... ISLAMIC KILLERS TARGET AMERICA

Lest anyone become complacent and forget the real reason we're fighting the war on terror, Osama is back in the news. U.S. intelligence officials say Bin Laden has directed that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his bunch over in Iraq turn their attention toward attacks in the United States. Interesting.....it seems Bin Laden is ordering the insurgents in Iraq to throw in the towel over there. But I thought that war was hopeless? Anyway, back to the threats against America.

Reports show that Bin Laden contacted al-Zarqawi and asked for the shift in tactics. Now think about this for a minute. The purpose of the war on terror is so that we fight the enemies abroad instead of at home. The Islamic terrorists we are able to extinguish overseas can't darken the door at any of our airports. So now they appear to be turning their sites on us. Not concerned? You should be.

We haven't had a terrorist attack in this country since 9/11. What could be next? A shopping mall? A sporting event? A bus terminal? All it would take is one of these Islamofascist S.O.B's to put on a suicide bomber vest, duck into a crowded restaurant and pull the cord.  Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't already happened.

This is just a friendly reminder -- a reminder that will be ignored by many -- as to why the War on Terrorism must be fought and won.  As the cause of freedom expands through the Middle East, terrorists like Bin Laden will become increasingly concerned that their time is gone.  They need something spectacular, and fast, to turn the attention back to them and their goals for the destruction of the Western society

HOW LONG BEFORE THE EASILY-OFFENDED SPEAK UP?

Uh oh.  here's the new Buffalo nickel that our U.S.Mint is now distributing.  It's going to cause some problems ... problems because they did too good a job on the Buffalo.  After counting four legs there still  seems to be one appendage left.  Just what is that think hanging down from the bottom of the Buffalo?  Why, it's a penis!  Kids are going to love this.  Questions will be asked and parents will panic.  Changes will just have to be made.  Our very moral fabric is under attack here.  Parents are going to have to explain Buffalo penises to their children.  This will scar them for life.  Perhaps the morality police can do something before too many of our kids see this.

HERE'S SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE STOPPED ... NOW.

We have a new fad in Florida.  Idiots are spending thousands of bucks to have actual train horns mounted on their pickup trucks.  They like to drive around the Miami and South Beach area scaring the Depends off senior citizens as they blast them with a 160 decibel wave of noise.  Lino Alvarado has those horns on his truck.  He demonstrated the horns for a reporter.  After the blast he said "Did you see those kids flinch?  But old people are even better."  One train horn owner described the reactions of people as he drove by a Miami nightclub and gave them a blast.  He relates how people dove to the pavement in fear.

These are assaults, and the victims would be wholly justified in dragging these immature idiots out of their trucks and beating them to within a half inch of their lives.

OBSOLETE HIGH SCHOOLS?

I learned from CNN this morning that the governors of 13 states are going to gather to discuss ways to revamp and restructure out high schools.  One in three eighth graders who enter high school never graduate.  Those that do need remedial education more often than not when and if they get to college.  No doubt high schools need help ... but you can bet your last dime that these governors will studiously avoid.  Here's your list of items these governors want to address through their newly-formed group "Achieve."

  1. Raise standards.
  2. Require rigorous college curriculum
  3. Develop tests of college readiness
  4. Hold high schools accountable for graduates and dropouts.

What's missing?  Let's go back to that Harvard study that is now many years old.  A Harvard study group found that the best and most efficient "quick fix" out there for improving the quality of government schools in this country would be to reduce the power of teacher's unions.  Until you see the governors and Achieve address this problem you will know that their efforts are, at beast, half-hearted.  Improving education is a worthy goal to most politicians, but not nearly as important as appeasing the teacher's unions.

PLEASE SPARE US ALL

Yesterday, the Michael Jackson trial got underway. "Jacko" is charged with being a child molester, among other things. Even though a verdict has yet to be rendered in the trial, we have all been sentenced to months of worthless coverage of this nonsense. We will hear and read daily updates about what was discovered at his Neverland ranch, what "the accuser" had to say and on and on and on.

After one day of testimony, here's my prediction.  Michael walks.  Is he a pervert?  You bet.  Did he molest this kid?  More likely than not.  God only knows how many previous victims have been paid off by the Jackson crowd.  He's a strange, twisted, bizarre little man .. and he's going to walk.  (At least I didn't say he is going to get off.)  This kid is a victim of more than Michael Jackson .. he also is and has been victimized by a crazed, money-hungry mother.  Wait until Jay Leno takes the stand to say that this crazy broad tried to extort money from him!

Did you pay any attention to the opening remarks by the defense and the state yesterday?  The defense was brilliant!  The prosecutor looked like he was in the middle of a high school mock trial.

What happens after the trial ... after the not guilty verdict? Michael produces another album and goes on tour .. and doubles our gross national product in six weeks.

I'm not really sure just who Trevor Bothwell is, but he sure has some strong things to say about government schools.  Oh ... by the way.  My home state of Georgia no longer has the nation's worst government schools.  My second home of Florida now has that honor.  Must be something about me.

If you listen to the media, the trade deficit and the budget deficit and the national debt are going to be the ruin of the nation. Not so fast, say David H. Levey and Stuart S. Brown, who say none of the above are really a problem.

Believe it or not, one woman is sticking up for embattled Harvard President Larry Summers. Cathy Young says Summers was right.

Former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich has an interesting column about people who blame Wal-Mart for supposedly destroying jobs and so forth. He says if people want to blame someone, it's time to look in the mirror.

Hollywood...liberal? You don't say! The left was busy applauding the boilerplate Bush-bashing at the Academy Awards Sunday night, and The Media Research Center has the story.

Nearly a million people were slaughtered in the genocide in Rwanda 10 years ago...and you may be more than a little bit surprised to know that UN Secretary-General Kofi Anna had a little something to do with it.

Is there such a thing as a moderate Muslim? Absolutely, and Kamal Nawash is one such example. He says it's time for his fellow Muslims to wake up to their image problem.

With the firestorm over Larry Summers still raging at Harvard, Star Parker has some suggestions for the faculty there. How about actually debating the merits of what he said?

Speaking of college campuses, Thomas Sowell draws attention to a case not at Harvard, but at the University of Seattle, where they seem to have a problem with military recruiters.

The AARP is lining up to oppose any reform to Social Security by President Bush. Rich Lowry says it's time for people to quit the AARP, and says they need to realize they organization's true agenda.

If this isn't a sad commentary on tax policy in the United States, I don't know what is. Former countries in the old Soviet Bloc, including Russia, have adopted a flat tax. Of course the Fair Tax plan is better, but how sad is it that the former Soviet Union has a better system of taxation than we do? Bruce Bartlett has the details.
