THE WEEKEND'S BOOK SIGNINGS

Two --- well, actually three book signings of The FairTax Book in Colorado over the weekend.  On Friday night we were at the Barnes & Noble in Denver.  Now my show isn't carried in Denver, so I was a bit concerned about the crowd, but a few hundred people showed up.  So far, so good.  Saturday morning I flew across the Rockies to Grand Junction.  Now there is a 50,000 watt blowtorch in Grand Junction, KNZZ, that carries the show .. so no worries there.  In fact, we had to schedule two book signings - one for the afternoon and one for the evening - because the hotel ballroom we were using could not accommodate all of the people who wanted to attend.  I can't say enough about the people of Grand Junction and KNZZ.  They've asked me not to let you in on their secret though ... so we'll just move on.

APPEARANCES THIS WEEK

I'll be making three stops.  Tuesday night in Indianapolis, Wednesday evening in Lexington, Ky., and Thursday evening in Knoxville, Tennessee.  You can find information on upcoming signings on the Neal's Appearances page, always linked from the home page of boortz.com.  Then next week we'll be visiting Oklahoma City and Tulsa ... details coming.

STILL MAKING THE NEWS

Politicians, current and former, are out there promoting the fair tax also.  Here's an article from the Joplin (Mo.) Globe about the former lieutenant governor of Missouri spreading the FairTax word.  The crowd may have been small ... but here's a former state official pushing the cause, and it's happening across the country.  Every morning I get email notifications of columns and stories appearing in newspapers across the country about the fair tax.  Am I saying that this is a movement that has the support of the majority of the American people?  Not at all!  The majority of Americans can't even name their two U.S. Senators.  I am saying that there is a growing dedicated segment in American that wants this FairTax idea to get a fair and complete hearing in Washington.  These people reject the president's tax reform commission idea of incremental reform.  They understand how our current tax system is damaging our economy and harassing American workers.  A dedicated minority can bring this to pass.  Remember, from the beginning to the end of the Revolutionary War -- 1776 to 1783 -- there was never a majority of Colonists who supported the idea of independence from Great Britain.  We're talking another revolution here.  Passage of The FairTax Bill, HR-25, would constitute the biggest transfer of power from the government to the people since our Constitution was ratified.  You can do your part.  The FairTax Book has slipped to No. 11 on the New York Times Bestseller's list.  It doesn't take all that many people ordering from Amazon.com or visiting your local book store to push it back up ... and this positioning on the NYT list is a certain indication to the political class that the FairTax has legs.  Remember ... every single penny of royalties from The FairTax Book for this week will go to hurricane relief.

CIRCLING THE WAGONS

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh wrote a book about his time in the Clinton administration.  In it, he dared to criticize Bill Clinton, and even went so far as to accuse the former president of not helping the FBI with its investigation into the terrorist bombing of Khobar Towers in 1996.  Bill Clinton ignoring terrorism?  Can you imagine that?  Well ... as a matter of fact, I can.

Well, after it was announced that Freeh would be taping an interview with Mike Wallace, the Clintons became outraged.  How dare Bill's legacy be called into question!  60 Minutes tried to interview Bill Clinton, but instead just got Sandy 'Pants' Berger to say that Clinton did press the Saudis for help in the investigation.  A convicted classified document stealer...now that's a credible witness.

What's worse than that is that Freeh says the FBI concluded Iran orchestrated the attack, but because Bill Clinton wanted better relations with Iran, he refused to take action and pursue any prosecution.  Islamic terrorists blow up 19 U.S. servicemen and the president of the United States won't even go so far as to send a subpoena. And people wonder why 9/11 happened....how about because they had an eight-year start.

Freeh also asked the million dollar question: "Do we have the will and the courage to keep going after terrorists before and after attacks, in a war that has no real end?"  Probably not.

THE HARRIET MIERS NOMINATION

Pat Buchanan was on 'Meet The Press' yesterday complaining about the Harriet Miers nomination by President Bush to the United States Supreme Court.  He pretty much summed up the complaints on the right about her qualifications to serve on the high court. But their objections are starting to sound a little bit like elitist whining. Among their concerns:

--Harriet Miers has never been a judge. Well, guess what...neither have quite a few other justices, including the recently departed Chief Justice William Rehnquist.  Doesn't matter.  Besides, it's not like we've been getting such wonderful rulings out of these judges with all their experience over the last several decades.  The manager of your local McDonald's would probably do a better job sitting on Supreme Court than some of the liberals on the bench.

--Harriet Miers has no paper trail.  Since she never served on the bench, we don't know what she thinks, they howl.  Looks like the Republicans are adopting the Democratic "show us the documents" tact here.  Well, that's what confirmation hearings are for.  She'll be asked about her thoughts on various subjects, and people can make their decision based on her responses.

The linchpin of the conservative argument against Miers is that there are any number of more qualified conservative jurists that could take her place.  That's nice, but the White House realized that with the Democrats having the filibuster, none of the well-known conservative judges had a prayer of being confirmed.

Since she was his personal lawyer and secretary, the nomination of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court does smell just a bit, but it's not like it hasn't happened before.  Once people hear from her, the whole thing will either backfire, or she'll be easily confirmed.  Time to wait and see on this one.

COVERING THE NEWS

Speaking of the Supreme Court, it's interesting to watch the news media cover the Harriet Miers nomination as if the majority of the American people actually know what's going on and really care.  To illustrate the point, you could take $20 out of your wallet at your workplace today and offer to pay it to the first person that could name all 9 justices on the Supreme Court.  You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that would get past one or two.  That twenty will go home in your pocket.

Yet, you would have no problem finding an endless supply of people who could tell you that Tom Cruise's girlfriend is pregnant.  Or that Boy George was arrested for drug possession.  Such is the state of our current culture that most people pay absolutely no attention to news that actually affects them and instead focus on celebrity-worshiping.  A majority of justices on the Supreme Court earlier this year voted to give government the endless power to steal their property, yet people remain obsessed with Hollywood.

Send your children off to government schools and this is what you get.  By the way, did you know some rabbis are criticizing a song on Madonna's new album?  Scandalous!

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Bill Kristol has his ear to the ground in Washington and he says the White House can expect one or more indictments in the Plamegate case.  Thanks to their government education, most people perceive an indictment as a conviction.

Unbelievably, more and more people are taking Louis Farrakhan's crackpot theories about Hurricane Katrina seriously.  The whole thing was racism, you see.  Oh...and poverty and inequality and all the other leftist buzzwords.

According to a survey by the Washington Times, half of the Republican Senators doubt Harriet Miers.  That still leaves at least 78 senators to send her to get fitted for a black robe.

Columbus Day is coming....and you know what that means! Another round of profiles detailing Christopher Columbus' evil ways.  Tom Purcell explores his background.

The left, including the media and Democrats, are still trying to figure out how to take down Bush.  As for the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, Mark Steyn isn't as concerned.  He says she'll get the job done.

He's not exactly thrilled with George Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers...but columnist Jack Kelley says the conservatives complaining about Miers are just whining.

Is Tom DeLay guilty?  Absolutely, according to Rich Lowry.  However, he says DeLay is only guilty of practicing politics, which means you can toss every member of Congress in jail.

A report in a New Orleans newspaper rebuts quite a few of the outrageous stories that came out during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  John Leo takes a look at some of the more memorable claims.

Is President George W. Bush done?  The war in Iraq, the botched response to Hurricane Katrina, possible indictments of officials in his administration and the nomination of Harriet Miers have the president on the ropes.  But according to Michael Barone, he's down, but not out.

There seems to be some success in the House of Representatives in offsetting the massive federal spending for Hurricane Katrina aid.  Robert Novak reports the Speaker has switched sides on the issue.

Pigs are vanishing all over England.  Place the blame on political correctness.

Save the tree octopus!
