FEDERALIZE DISASTER RELIEF

The idea is still stewing in Washington about federalizing disaster relief. In other words, to make first response to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina a federal responsibility rather than a state one.  Many people, uneducated as they are in such things as federalism, might think that this is a great idea, especially considering the miserable performance of the State of Louisiana.

OK .. consider this. Let me tell you where this is going to go. If we Federalize disaster relief we will add billions to the federal budget. Maybe we'll raise taxes to cover the cost. Maybe we'll just add it to the deficit. One thing for sure, we won't cut costs elsewhere to compensate for the added burden. Meanwhile, back in the states, do you think the state legislators are going to have a special session to cut taxes since they no longer have to bear the brunt of first response after disasters? Are you kidding? The states will merely spend that money elsewhere ... most likely on vote buying programs of some nature. So, by federalizing disaster response you add to the tax burden at the federal level, or the deficit, while providing no relief whatsoever at the local level.

This is a political solution, not a practical one. Good luck.

WHY THE FREE PASS?

The dysfunctional Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco went to Capitol Hill yesterday to testify before the Senate Finance Committee about Katrina. Now ... get this. When Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco testified in front of a Senate committee was she grilled by members of Congress for her inept handling of the Hurricane Katrina crisis? Was she taken to task for worrying more about her political image than the drowning and starving residents of her state?

Are you kidding? Of course not! Remember, Blanco is a Democrat. She got a pass. In fact, not a single Senator asked her about her response to the disaster. Here's the really outrageous part: she asked not to be questioned about it, and the Senate, which is considering her request for billions and billions of taxpayer dollars, complied. They rolled over. No problem governor, they said, we won't ask you a single tough question. So protective of our tax dollars, aren't they?

Instead, they listened to her drone on about how the Imperial Federal Government should shake down its citizens to pay for things like job creation. How nice.

The media is blaming the entire Hurricane Katrina response on George Bush, and not even members of his own party have enough backbone to put some of the blame where it belongs.

I may be an Aggie ... but this IS funny.

DELAY'S INDICTMENT

Prosecutor is a sworn enemy. Ronnie Earle. Conspired to violate Texas election laws. No specifics. Democrats in Texas believe that the scheme DeLay is accused of masterminding resulted in the domination of the Texas legislature by Republicans.

DeLay is only charged with a conspiracy. There are no details in the indictment. All it says is that DeLay was supposed to have agreed with someone on a scheme to direct corporate campaign donations to candidates for the Texas legislature. No details on how the scheme was carried out. No details on what anyone did to further the scheme. At this point DeLay's lawyers have no idea at all what in the world they are supposed to defend against.

If guilty ... removed from office and punished.

Might be advisable to remember that shortly after Republican Kay Bailey Hutcheson because a Senator, this same prosecutor had her indicted on some misuse of office charge. The case was so weak that it never even reached trial.

If found to be groundless ... questions need to be asked about the prosecutor.

We can also remember here the questions that were raised about Clinton's fund-raising activities. The Senate had a hearing on those abuses. Ohio Democratic Senator John Glenn worked 24/7 to make sure that the Senate didn't give any serious consideration to the charges. He was rewarded with a ride on the Space Shuttle.

But, then ... Clinton was a Democrat. Different rules.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

An Alabama state senator says the reason the Gulf is suffering from two major hurricane seasons this year is because God is punishing people for their sinful behavior.  That would explain all of the hurricanes in Las Vegas.

Democrats aren't saying a word about the meeting between New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Nation of Islam "Leader" (or whatever) Louis Farrakhan.  Perhaps Democrats actually have a limit to the lunacy they'll stand behind.

Dick Morris went on 'Hannity and Colmes' last night and said Ronnie Earle, the prosecutor in the DeLay indictment, is a loose hand grenade. He did say DeLay probably did what he's accused of.

Speaking of Dick Morris, he says Hillary may be assessing her shift to the right, given George Bush's low pull numbers. Perhaps we'll start to see the real Hildabeast.

A Muslim official who wrote a book on how to beat your wife without leaving marks on her body has been ordered by a judge to read the Spanish constitution.  Women everywhere can no doubt breath a sigh of relief.

With DeLay getting all of the media coverage, will the press start demanding to know what Chuck Schumer's office was doing getting a credit report for a Republican politician? Edward Morrissey explains.

Ann Coulter says conservatives shouldn't hold their breath when it comes to the second vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. She details Bush's support of liberal Republicans over conservative ones in other instances.

Quite a bit of the reporting from New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was nothing more than rumor-mongering.  Jonah Goldberg says the press has a lot of explaining to do.

Robert Novak reports on a Nevada senator who stopped a $9 billion raid on the federal treasury from happening right on the Senate floor.  You won't hear much about this one from anywhere else.

Even Hillary Clinton is distancing herself from Cindy Sheehan.  Larry Elder explains why, and includes some of Sheehan's more colorful statements.

Here's a bit of give-and-take on the FairTax vs. a flat tax. I wrote the FairTax part. Please note that the flat tax proponent brings up that old saw about adding the retail sales tax to the income tax, not replacing.
