DELTA STRIKE

Scott G. Winterton, Deseret Morning News

The Delta UNION pilots are really ratcheting up their talk of a strike.  Several weeks ago I honestly thought that these pilots, though they are union members, wouldn't actually go ahead with this absurd plan.  There is precedence.  Eastern Airlines pilots walked off the job with the expressed intent to destroy their employer.  The Delta pilots may do the same.

Ever since I've lived in Atlanta there has been talk of the "Delta Family."  OK, fine.  Let's use that analogy.  Now we have a huge family disagreement, a bitter and divisive fight between husband and wife.   If you're married, and all of a sudden you just find that you can't live with your wife (or husband) any more, what do you do?  You get a divorce!  You leave! You pack your stuff and you get the hell out!  If you have any jointly-owned property you'll try to get your share, but the first job is to empty your drawers an closets and get out!  So --- the Delta pilots don't like the way they're being treated.  That's too bad.  They have, in fact, made some pretty massive wage concessions, just as husbands or wives will make concessions to restore domestic tranquility.  In this case the concessions don't seem to be enough.  So .... leave!   If you job (wife) is so dissatisfying to you --- quit!  You walk away and try to find someone else who will treat you better.

Now ... things are pretty much the same for older husbands as they are for older pilots.  It's tough to walk away from a marriage of many years.  After all, when you're out there in the dating market as an older man there just aren't as many options available to you as there were when you were, say, in your 20s or 30s and could parade your flat belly in front of the available women.   Well ... that's the choice you make.  You can stay with the wife, even though the relationship wasn't what it was, or you can go see how you make out in the crowded single's bars.

So --- what are the Delta pilots considering?  They're talking murder-suicide.  They don't like the way they're being treated by their wife (company), so their solution is just to kill her.  It's the old "If I cain't have her nobody can have her" routine.  Instead of just walking away from the woman you think has wronged you, and perhaps trying to get some of your stuff back through a legal action, you just kill her.  That'll teach her for treating you this way, won't it!  Of course you won't have any job at all (career suicide) at that point, but you've shown her, haven't you!  She'll never treat anyone that way again, will she?

Delta Airlines is struggling to survive.  Sure, there have been management mistakes.  One of those mistakes was making the Delta pilots the highest-paid in the industry for so many years.  Is murder the answer?

One of the most ridiculous aspects of the Delta pilot's action was a huge sign they had erected outside of Delta headquarters yesterday.  The sign read "Bankruptcy profiteering."  Profiteering?  Delta hasn't made a profit in how long now?  Years?  And the Delta pilots are erecting signs about bankruptcy profiteering?  Oh yeah, they're in touch.

OH YEAH .... LET'S KEEP THE REPUBLICANS IN CHARGE.  THIS IS SUCH FUN.

Federal government spending hit a record all-time high in the month of March.  March of 2006 saw a 13.7% increase over March of 2005.  Government revenues rose by 1.6%.  Thus far there hasn't been one single veto of one single spending bill by Bush.  Yeah ... just can't wait to put these people in charge again.

THE INVASION INTENSIFIES

In Nogales, Mexico, not far from the U.S. border, there's a shelter.  The shelter is a safe house for Mexicans who are waiting their chance or their turn to illegally enter the United States.  Right now that shelter is overflowing.  Francisco Loureiro manages this particular staging point for the Mexican invasion.  Laureiro tells the Associated Press that there hasn't been so many "migrants" in that shelter since 1986.   And just what was happening in 1986?  That's when the United States congress granted amnesty to 2.6 million illegal aliens in this country, allowing them to get their American citizenship.

Why are the invaders clogging the safe house now?  They're encouraged by a U.S. Congress that is clearly getting ready for another grant of blanket amnesty to people who intentionally violated our laws by coming here, staying here and working here.  Some of the invaders staying at the shelter are saying that family members already in the U.S. are encouraging them to hurry up and get here while there's a chance.

There are other staging points along the Mexican - Arizona border. At one such in the desert 40 vans full of invaders arrived in just one afternoon.   Come nightfall this particular segment of the invasion force would cross the border and start walking.  There will be no U.S. troops there to stop them.

First step --- close the border.  What are our politicians waiting for?

QUICK!  DEADLINE IS NEAR!  FIND SOMEONE WHO IS OFFENDED!

In newspapers and broadcast newsrooms today the assignment editors will be sending out reporters with their normal, daily operational orders.  Find someone who is in some way offended by something that someone else has done or said.  Bring us the story, and we'll make it our lead.

That's it.  I just thought you might like to know what's going on in these newsrooms.

MILITARY RECRUITERS BOOTED

The students of the University of California at Santa Cruz should be ashamed of themselves.  Earlier this week, four military recruiters were run off the campus after they were denied entry to an area where their tables were set up.  The crowd reportedly chanted "Don't come back. Don't come back" as the Army and National Guard recruiters left.

This is a despicable lack of respect for our armed services.  Evidently the group who organized the protest is called Students Against War.  But really, this has nothing to do with being against the war -- this is about peace-at-any-price.  This is about a willingness to live as slaves rather than fight for freedom.  And, most of all, this is an exhibition of the "I'm a college student, therefore I know it all" attitude so prevalent on college and university campuses today.   Someday maybe these "students" will grow up.  Can't happen too soon.

Now .. here's what should happen.   I wonder just how many people at UC Santa Cruz receive U.S. government grants and government-subsidized student loans?  How about direct aid from the federal government?  If they aren't willing to allow military recruiters to set up shop and make their pitch, then perhaps they'd like to decline government money as well?

Something tells me they don't see it that way.  Somebody needs to teach these brats a lesson about respect.

DEMOCRAT BREAKING HOUSE RULES

hspace=3 Our old friend John Conyers of Michigan is in the soup.  Now, this story is being reported by CNN...but that seems to be the only news outlet that's giving it any prominence.  CNN is even reporting that Conyers is a Democrat.  Imagine that! A little fair and balanced reporting from CNN.  I guess there's a first time for anything.

Anyway, Conyers is under fire for misusing his staff...and there are some dandy accusations flying around.  Two former staff members have come forward to allege that the Michigan Democrat:

  • Routinely brought his two young sons to work to be babysat by his staff....the same staff that is on the government payroll. His legal adviser says there were times he had to call around as late as 9 o'clock at night trying to find Conyers, so he could give his kids back.  Some father.  One staff member even moved into Conyers house to become his full-time nanny, again while on the government payroll.

  • And now for the cardinal sin: Conyers used his Congressional staff to help run his campaign.  That is a no-no. We'll see if the ethics committee takes an interest in that one.

Now ask yourself something.  If this had been a Republican, would the coverage of it be confined to CNN?  What if it were say...Tom DeLay or Bill Frist?  The media would be jumping up and down screaming.  As it is, Conyers gets treated with kid gloves. Just another day at the office for the liberal media.

FITZGERALD BACKPEDALS

Boy...it sure seems like Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's case against Scooter Libby continues to fall apart.  Fitzgerald had stated, with much fanfare, that Vice President Dick Cheney (at President Bush's urging) told Scooter Libby to leak intelligence to the New York Times about Iraq.  This caused quite an uproar in the media.  Except now, Fitzgerald says that's not true.

Believe it or not, Fitzgerald filed a new document with the judge in the Libby case correcting the matter.  It turns out that what the media was reporting about what Libby was told to feed to the New York Times was false.  Oops.

Now..follow the mainstream media on this one.  The same press that reported that Cheney and Bush told Libby to leak the information aren't saying a word about this one.  The record in court is being corrected, but not in the court of public opinion.

Sure looks like this trial is going nowhere fast.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

So what are the odds of the Democrats retaking the House of Representatives?  Not very good.  The reason: not enough good candidates.  Looks like there's more rejection ahead for the left.

All of this talk about a guest worker program has produced the greatest influx of illegal aliens in 20 years.  Imagine what would happen if amnesty legislation actually passed.

A new poll shows that fewer than 1 in 5 Americans have a favorable view of Islam.
Gee...I can't imagine why.  Maybe it has something to do with all of that Islamic terrorism.  Just a thought.

The officer that Cynthia McKinney hit is considering legal action against the congresswoman.  On top of that, a grand jury is still considering whether or not to indict McKinney.  Things could get ugly for her...no pun intended.

The Crawford Crazy Cindy Sheehan is back in business...protesting near the president's Crawford, Texas ranch.  The only problem?  He wasn't there.  He was at Camp David.  Poor Cindy has her camps mixed up.

We here at Reading Assignments like to present all points of view.  So while bombing Iran back to the stoneage seems like a logical conclusion to the nuclear standoff, there are those who say otherwise.  Like Bush 41's National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft.

Thomas Sowell calls out Harry Reid for being against illegal immigration in 1993, but all of a sudden singing a different tune in 2006. He says people should make no mistake: by and large, Democrats are for amnesty.

General Motors is offering very lucrative severance packages to employees to get them to retire.  George Will points out an interesting fact: it's better to be fired by GM than it is to be hired by most companies.

Why are we having this problem with illegal immigration in the first place?  Ann Coulter takes all the way back to 1965....to a law pushed by Teddy Kennedy.  Yes, it goes back that far.

To the casual observer, Cynthia McKinney's run-in with a Capitol Hill police officer may have just been a one-time thing.  But as Larry Elder tells us, McKinney has quite a history.  Read on to find out more.
