HERMAN CAIN FILLS IN

Yesterday Neal briefly introduced the national audience to Herman Cain. The local audience had a taste over the holidays and sent in many emails of praise. He's filling in today and Friday while Neal is off hitting the slopes. Let us know what you think. Meanwhile, here's a bit of Nuze pulled together by the people collectively known as STAFF.

ALITO HEARING SMACKDOWN

What do you get when you cross Ted Kennedy, Arlen Specter, Dick Durbin, Joe Biden and Patrick Leahy with the crying wife of a Supreme Court justice nominee?  You get what we had yesterday....day three of the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito.

The latest controversy is over an organization Alito allegedly belonged to 20 years ago...the Concerned Alumni of Princeton.  Evidently this group published a magazine and in that magazine, somebody wrote some not-too-nice things about minorities.  Alito says he doesn't remember joining and said the only reason he would have become part of the group was because he was in ROTC.  The nominee disavowed all of the comments made in the article and said he disagreed with them all.  Not good enough for Teddy Kennedy or Chuckie Schumer.

They both grilled Alito about it, to no avail.  Then, at one point in the hearing, Alito's wife burst into tears, apparently over the beating Alito was taking.  That's unfortunate, but welcome to politics in the year 2006.  If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.  Which she did, by the way, only to later return.  Still makes for a good headline, though.  Those evil Senators making that poor woman cry.  That's life in the big city.

So here we are...after hours of hearings...and what has been accomplished?  Absolutely nothing.  We've learned that Alito supports the Brown vs. Board of Education decision.  He won't say whether he is for or against abortion. That's about it. The Democrats are grasping at straws here....they don't really have anything to offer in the way of substantive debate over Alito's nomination.

The left comes up empty, once again. But it's fun to watch on TV.

HILLARY AND HARRY

Harry Belafonte, singer and long-time George W. Bush-hater, was in Venezuela last weekend visiting the fascist president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.  While he was there, he called the president of the United States "the world's greatest terrorist."  About what you would expect from an anti-American leftist and terrorist appeaser like Belafonte.

At any rate, no sooner had the uproar over Belafonte's comments died down than word came yesterday that Mr. Day-O himself is going to be attending the Children's Defense Fund's 2006 Winter Benefit awards luncheon.  Guess who else is scheduled to appear?

Hillary Clinton.  That's right...The Hildabeast is on the guest list for the event.  Since she seems to be going anyway, will she be publicly criticizing Bellafonte's remarks?  Will she refuse to appear with Belafonte, taking issue with his calling the American president a terrorist?

Don't hold your breath....chances are she probably agrees with him.  After all, she did say Iraqi women were better off under Saddam Hussein.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

Speaking of shouting "I'm a redneck", this bathing suit definitely does that. More in the Redneck Scrap Book.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Bad news for pregnant commuters in big cities...an unborn fetus doesn't count as an additional person in the HOV lane.  A judge in Arizona says so.

Looks like readers of the best-seller "A Million Little Pieces" have been had.  According to an investigation by The Smoking Gun, much of what's in the supposed non-fiction book is fabricated.  Oops.  Oprah even picked it for her book club!

Ann Coulter weighs in on the Samuel Alito nomination hearings
....and says liberals are being routed.  The Republicans on the panel don't even have to do anything except sit back and watch.

A 29-year-old English teacher in Ohio is being investigated for scoring with a 17-year-old boy.  Also in trouble is a former Kentucky teacher who ran off to Mexico with her 14-year-old student.

New York City police officers are being sent through something called "Islamic culture training."
No word if the training included how to blow up buses and chop off people's heads.   Actually, it looks more like sensitivity training.  Such a wise use of taxpayer resources!

Robert Novak says Democrats have yet to score a hit on Samuel Alito
...and Teddy Kennedy is coming up empty the most. Novak thinks Alito's dry, lawyerly style is helping him.

Schools in Charlotte, NC have made news because their students have the highest test scores among children in big cities.  Why is that?  Thomas Sowell says you can thank liberalism.

Did you watch the Rose Bowl?  Larry Elder says there was more to it than just the score....the event showcased what makes America great.  Check it out.

Debra Saunders has an interesting idea
....she says if Alito gets canned and not confirmed, George W. Bush should nominate Teddy Kennedy to the bench.  Imagine him sitting there trying to explain Chappaquiddick.

Speaking of Teddy Kennedy....did you know he belonged to an all-male club while he attended Harvard?  Seems more than a bit hypocritical to Judge Samuel Alito's college associations then, doesn't it?

A Midwestern perspective on politics and economics.
