| Friday, June 16, 2006 Another successful book signing, and now it's back to work on Somebody's Gotta Say It! Last night I was at the Barnes & Noble Book Store at the Waterside Shope in Naples, Florida to sign copies of the softcover edition of The FairTax Book. This was my first Naples appearance since signing on with Naples FM Talk 98.9 WGUF-FM .. and the crowd was very impressive. Thanks to all who came by, and thanks for the lattes! You know .. now that I think about it ... I ought to bring a taster to these events. Not that anyone would ever want to hurt me, right? OK .. just waiting for the WDBO crew to give me the go-ahead to give you the time and place. If we can pack 10,000 people into Orlando to demonstrate for the FairTax, there's no telling what kind of a boost this needed tax reform plan will get in Washington!
For those of you who were educated in government schools, let me explain where that money is coming from. Profits. Every single penny of the $12 million for Georgia Tech and the $400 million in additional research comes from the Chevron profits. The outrage here is that Chevron shouldn't have been allowed to keep those profits in the first place. Chevron is a corporation. Corporations are evil. Therefore, Chevron is evil and it is up to our government to punish that evil by confiscating profits. This money should have been the government's to spend, not Chevron's. Every good liberal and Democrat knows that a dollar spent by government does so much more for our economy and our society than ever dollar spent by a private party or an evil corporation ever could. Hopefully the Democrats will fulfill God's mission by regaining control of the congress again in November. Then they will take a few baby steps closer to the nirvana of a democratic socialist society by immediately passing laws limiting the profits that any corporation can earn, and providing for government confiscation of any profits in excess of the government-approved level.
Nancy Pelosi finally did it. After months of preaching about the "culture of corruption" in the Republican party, she realized that if anyone was going to take her seriously, she was doing to have to do something about William Jefferson. So she pushed for and got Democrats to vote to remove Jefferson from his seat on the Ways and Means Committee. We grudgingly give her an attagirl on this one, especially since there will be hell to pay from the Black Congressional Caucus. The vote now goes to the floor of the House, where a majority will have to approve the measure. But, as I said, the Congressional Black Caucus is upset. The chairman of that group, Melvin Watt of North Carolina, warned there will be consequences for Democrats over black voters. That's right...unbelievably, Watt is making threats against his own party over someone who was caught accepting a $100,000 cash bribe by the FBI. Yes, he hasn't been convicted of anything...but neither was O.J. We have to wonder what would have happened iff this had been a black Republican. No --- wait! We don't have to wonder. We know. The Congressional Black Caucus reserves its outrage for liberal black Democrats...and no one else. Perhaps a name change is in order...the Congressional Black Liberal Democratic Caucus. The full debate on the floor of the House should be interesting today...who will step to the podium to defend Jefferson?
The purpose was to draw out the Democrats...to get them on record saying that they don't support the war in Iraq and that they want to cut and run. Because ultimately...if you don't support the current mission, that's really the only position you can take. And with things going pretty well these days...cutting and running isn't something the American people would support. So out comes Nancy Pelosi...and says "This is a war that is a grotesque mistake." How nice. I'm sure all of the troops serving in Iraq from Pelosi's district are pleased to know she thinks they're there fighting for a "grotesque mistake." So what's her answer? She doesn't have one....all she says is that it's time for a new strategy, according to her "one that will make us safer, strengthen our military, and restore our reputation in the world." In other words, like most Democrats, she has no plan. Yesterday's debate served its purpose. It showed that Democrats have no real ideas of their own ... except to run and hide. By the way ... we need to stop this somewhat soft and generic "war on terror" label and call this war what it is. A war against Islamic extremism. Defining the enemy as "terrorism" is only half right. The full description of the enemy is "Islamic terrorism." Enough of protecting the violent religion of Islam behind the cloak of political correctness. The Pentagon announced yesterday that American casualties in Iraq have hit a grim milestone...2,500. That's 1,972 combat deaths and 528 from non-combat operations over the 3+ years of the war. It is a sad occasion, because every death is a tragedy. But when it comes to the war business, is it really that surprising of a number? Remember when armchair generals like Weasly Clark were on TV during the run up to the war? They were predicting well over 10,000f American casualties during the initial Coalition invasion of Iraq! It never happened. If you would have told everyone who supported the war in Iraq, including Democrats, that the casualty estimates would be 2,500...they would have considered that number low. That's because historically, it is. There's no need to list them...but every other war American has been involved in over its history has had dramatically many more casualties. Considering the size of the mission, the millions of people liberated, the overall size of Iraq and the length of the conflict, 2,500 is a pretty low number. This is not to take anything away from the tragedy of every single death and casualty .. just to put some things in perspective.
Here's a chart that shows all American casualties in every war going back to the American Revolution. So far, the war in Iraq compares to the War of 1812 in numbers of casualties. Iran is saying it would use nuclear weapons if it were threatened. Wait a minute...I thought their nuclear program was for peaceful purposes and they didn't have any nuclear weapons! Looks like somebody just slipped. E-mails sent by Keith Olbermann while at MSNBC are getting even more interesting, with two viewers reporting Olbermann told them to go kill themselves. Olbermann says he's embarrassed...especially about the obscene e-mails. Given his ratings, perhaps his time could be short. The Senate voted overwhelmingly not to pull out of Iraq by year's end. This proves one thing...that while Democrats are publicly pushing the cut and run strategy, they know they can't vote for it...because the public doesn't support it. So what exactly was the United Nations' deputy secretary-general doing criticizing the Bush Administration the other day? Robert Novak says he knew what he was doing...and that was trying to inject himself into the next American presidential election. The killing of Zarqawi and the non-indictment of Karl Rove this week have thrown a wrench in the Democrats' agenda. Michael Barone says many on the left were reliving the Watergate and Vietnam years. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict rages on. With Hamas controlling the Palestinian territories these days, things don't seem to be getting any better. Charles Krauthammer says the real problem is the addiction to being victims that the Palestinians have. All the uproar over Ann Coulter that has come from the left and the mainstream media has simply proved Coulter's point. Mark Davis says he wouldn't have said what she said, but points out that there wasn't much outrage when others said things that were worse. The mainstream media, always on the lookout for an opportunity to bash Israel, got caught last week...big-time. The New York Times carried a front-page picture of a girl weeping as she searched for her father, supposedly killed by the Israeli military. But as Mona Charen explains, the rocket that killed the girl's father didn't come from the Israeli Defense Forces. Oops. David Limbaugh takes a look at some of the points made by Ann Coulter in her book. Is liberalism really a religion? Perhaps...but David Limbaugh likes to think of it more as a cult. Pat Buchanan, no fan of the war in Iraq, says the Bush Administration sent Condoleezzaa Rice to a Baptist convention to speak out against isolationism. But Buchanan wants to know who these isolationists really are. Ultimate Spider Man artist is a Boortz fan? See for yourself. | ||
