| Tuesday -- March 14, 2006 Let's take you back a few weeks. We're going to the University of Washington where the esteemed student was considering a memorial on the UW campus to honor Medal of Honor winner Gregory Boyington. One member of the student senate said that there were already enough memorials on campus for "rich white men." Never mind that Boyington was (a) not rich, and (b) a Sioux Indian ... the point here is that white men are considered by some to be politically incorrect. Now let's move across the tip of the country from the Northwest tip to the Northeast tip. We're visiting Portland, Maine. There we have a city-owned ballpark named Hadlock Field. Hadlock Field is the home for the AA Portland Sea Dogs. The Sea Dogs are owned by Dan Burke, once the president of ABC-Capital Cities. Burke wanted to do something to thank the people of Portland for their support of the Sea Dogs! So, when you want to thank some folks, how about giving them a piece of art! Wow! What an incredible idea! So Burke wanders out and commissions a bronze statue. It's actually quite nice. The sculpture shows a traditional family of four -- mom, dad, brother, sister -- on their way to enjoy a game at Hadlock Field. There's a problem though. Hadlock Field, as I've told you, is owned by the city of Portland. Burke leases the park for his Sea Dog baseball games. Portland has a Public Art Committee, and Burke made the mistake of not giving the Public Art Committee their props. The committee is now on the attack. How dare they be ignored! OK .. now, if I've done my job right, you're wondering just what the big problem is with the statue, and how this connects to the University of Washington case. To understand the problem let's go to Jack Soley, the vice chairman of the Portland Public Art Committee. Soley says that if Burke had done what he was supposed to do, and that is to seek input from the committee before he dared to present a gift of art to the city, the committee would have steered him away from a design that featured "white folks on pedestals." Soley says that Portland already has enough white folks on pedestals, just as that student senate member at UW said that they already had enough memorials to rich white men. Soley wasn't finished with his comments. He repeated that Portland has so much statuary that represents white Anglo-Saxon people. They want more "progressive" avant-garde art. Yeah .. that's the ticket. So, there's the story. White is definitely out in Portland, Maine. In fact, Portland might be a good place to go rent a grass plot in front of a service station to sell your African statuary and those nifty black velvet paintings of Louis Armstrong and Aretha Franklin. There's money to be made! Get to it! You can read the public's comments about this controversy in the Portland Press Herald. Here's your link! The feds have demanded that several owners of Internet search engines turn over records for one particular month. They want to go through these records to see how many people are searching the Internet for porn; more particularly, child porn. Most of the owners of these search engines have caved and have handed over the documents. Not Google. Google will be in court today fighting the government's demands. It's nice to see someone standing up against an intrusive government.
France has a big problem with youth unemployment. The unemployment rate for young people in France is 23%. In some high-immigration (read Muslim) neighborhoods the rate is 40 percent. Why? Because once you hire them it takes a constitutional amendment, permission from the European Union, a bad year for Bordeaux and a total eclipse of the sun to fire them, no matter how incompetent, stupid or lazy they prove to be. Employers don't like to hire unproven workers when they can't later get rid of them ... so the younger workers go unemployed. The solution is a change in the First Employment Contract rules. The change will allow an employer to hire young people under a contract that can be terminated within two years without explanation. Thus the student riots. These weasels-in-training have been conditioned to expect the protections of the great French social welfare state, and the very idea that they might have to prove themselves during the first two years of their employment causes them great anxiety and distress --- thus their attacks on police. It's a wonderful day not to be French.
Can it be said that
Russ Feingold has given aid and comfort to the very people who are trying to
kill us? What we're actually
seeing here is the fairness of the American judicial system. Do you think
Islamists will take note? Yeah, sure. We're all holding our breath
waiting for that to happen.
REDNECK SCRAP BOOK Ever wonder what Daisy Duke might look like in 40 years? I think we may have a pretty accurate representation right here. Warning: may not be safe for work, definitely not safe for eyes. More in the Redneck Scrap Book. READING ASSIGNMENTS
Dubai Ports World announced they're pulling out of the deal to buy a British-owned company that currently manages several of our major ports. But it turns out DPW runs things down in Miami, and they're not pulling out of that. What now? Is Iraq in total disarray, about to descend into civil war and chaos? Nope...according to Ralph Peters, who just got back from Baghdad, the media has no idea what they're talking about. Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona says the federal government is failing to control the borders. Unfortunately, he will be one of the most ignored politicians in the entire Congress. Neither party has any intention of stemming the flow of illegal aliens. You may have heard about the kid in Colorado that tape-recorded his teacher comparing George Bush to Hitler. Thomas Sowell says such classroom brainwashing is far too common. Slobodan Milosevic is being remembered this week...following his expiration in a war crimes prison. But Christopher Hitchens points out that we shouldn't forget the Butcher of Belgrade's many crimes. Republicans are struggling politically at the moment...particularly with the White House's fortunes fading...but while the Democrats say they will do things differently, they have no idea how. David Limbaugh brings us up to speed. The death of peace activist and former hostage Tom Fox this week at the hands of Islamic terrorists is indeed tragic. But Cal Thomas says it's also unfortunate that the Christian peace activist thought he could change the minds of Islamic fanatics. The only thing more entertaining than watching liberals lose elections is watching them attack their fellow Democrats. George Clooney is upset Democrats caved on the war in Iraq. The crazy mullahs in Iran have announced that they want peaceful relations with all countries, except the U.S. and Israel. Perhaps a few bombing runs might make them reconsider. The former and now convicted mayor of Atlanta may lose his license to practice law. Golly! Now that's a shame, isn't it? Oh, and he won't be able to vote either. If you're uncomfortable with watching two men kiss, you won't be allowed to immigrate to the Netherlands. Former Muslim, Wafa Sultan, criticizes Islam as violent in a recent interview aired on Al Jazeera. Watch video. Read partial transcript. Isaac Hayes is apparently perfectly fine with making fun of Christians, Jews and whatever other religion South Park has taken a swing at, but quits when they have a jab at Scientology. I think we'll all agree that South Park is an equal opportunity offender. If they haven't offended you yet, don't worry, they will. | ||
