*The FairTax Book, by the way, is currently listed as No. 30. That's down from a high of No. 3. We're No. 6 in the non-fiction category.
I'm told that O'Reilly had a guest on his show earlier this week promoting the cause of the illegal alien invaders in our country. I'm further informed that this guest really had a problem with referring to illegal aliens as illegal aliens. He said that this was like treating them as "second-class citizens." Someone's pulling my leg, right?
An amazing thing has happened over the past few years ... whether you support it or not, the FairTax has become a part of the political landscape. It's almost impossible for a federally elected official to hold a town hall meeting where comments and suggestions from the constituents are welcomed and not hear someone mention the FairTax in some context. It's part of the debate now, and for supporters it's time to push that debate. I got an email yesterday from some woman who says that she is sick and tired of hearing me talk about the fair tax. Well, I'm sorry. I know full well that there is a danger in chasing away listeners by dwelling on the FairTax. We actually turn away about 100 callers with FairTax questions and comments for every one we put on the air. Right now, with the soft cover debuting on Tuesday and the rally in less than three weeks, you're going to hear some FairTax conversation. I believe in this, my friends. I have no illusions about the FairTax having any real effect on me. I may well be retired by the time it becomes law ... IF it becomes law. It won't really matter to me at that point because my taxable income will hit bottom. This is about our children and our grandchildren. It's about moving America back once again to the top of the list of countries with economic freedom. It's about forestalling the collapse of Social Security and Medicare. It's about a massive transfer of power from politicians to citizens. It's time to stop whistling past the graveyard. Our country faces grave challenges, and the FairTax will put us in a position to face those challenges head-on. So ... to the woman who just can't listen anymore. Enjoy your music, or your NPR, and don't forget to catch "Entertainment Tonight" on the tube. The rest of us are trying to get some things done. So the jury passed on death. Instead of sending this scumbag to meet Mohammed, he'll be enjoying the next several decades in prison. Free room and board...all paid for by the taxpayers of the nation he attacked. So why didn't he get death, as he deserved? Three of the jurors said he only had limited knowledge of what was going to happen on 9/11. Only "limited" knowledge. What does it take for him to be responsible? Are we supposed to spare his life because he didn't golf with Mohammed Atta on the weekends? Three other jurors offered as their excuse that Moussaoui only had a minor role in 9/11. A minor role. OK ... full disclosure here. As I've said on the air, if I was on that jury I might have a difficult time voting for the death penalty myself. He didn't participate, he didn't plan. There's just the argument that he knew about it. Do we really want to start executing people because they knew a crime was going to be committed, and didn't tell someone? Something to think about.
Congress, eager to prove to everybody just what political whores they are, have now adopted legislation outlawing price gouging by big oil companies. YAY! That will bring down the gas prices and we'll all be happy. Hardly. The House approved yesterday criminal penalties and fines of up to $150 million for oil companies caught price gouging. It passed 389-34. It creates a price-gouging law with large fines and jail time for those who break it. So is this going to make gas cheaper? Nope. It will make it more expensive...and it will also create shortages. Here's why. What people call "price gouging," which is really just a fantasy dreamed up by the anti-capitalists, is the allocation of limited goods and services based on price. For instance, if there is only one gas station in the town...and that gas has to be trucked 50 miles up a mountain...then that gas station can charge a much higher price based on the supply and demand of the situation. But say under this new law, he can't do that. He'll be accused of price gouging. So he has to sell all of his gas at the regular market rate. So all the gas gets sold to whoever buys it, and the station runs out. Now nobody has any gas. There is simply no better way to allocate limited goods than by the magic of the free market. All price gouging laws are going to do is drive gas stations out of business, raise the price of gasoline and do absolutely no good. But hey, those ignorant, government-educated masses sure lap it up! Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by itslef but the wrod as a wlohe.
So he had an idea....which is actually an old idea: mount up a posse. He's recruiting members of the general public to round up the illegals and ship them out. Says the Sheriff: "There are so many illegals trying to make it into the county that it's overwhelming my deputies, so I have called on members of my 3000 member volunteer posse to assist." Nothing like a good old fashioned posse. Government of the people, by the people, for the people. You gotta like this guy. REDNECK SCRAP BOOK I wonder if the groom's name is Jack Sprat...More in the Redneck Scrap Book. READING ASSIGNMENTS
Max Boot has an interesting piece out in the L.A. Times. He says the high gas prices are not a result of a free-market supply and demand situation, but rather of dictatorships setting the price. A different take, to be sure. John Kenneth Galbraith, the famed liberal, socialist economist, is eulogized today by none other than the conservative George F. Will. You may have never heard of Galbraith, but his influence and reach were both far and wide. In the debate over illegal immigration, one thing that's coming up as often as the issue of the illegals is what to call them. Cal Thomas takes a look at the political correctness storm brewing when it comes to illegal aliens. | |||
