TWO WEEKS TO GO

That huge midterm election hits two weeks from tomorrow.

With her party's control of the House of Representatives all but assured for January 2007, Nancy Pelosi is getting excited.  The current House Democrat in line for the Speakership, Nancy Pelosi was asked what offices she would use as Speaker.  Her response:  "I'll have any suite I want."  How nice.

So is her optimism premature?  Nope.  If anything, certain Republicans and a few media outlets that think the GOP might retain control are downright delusional.  It isn't going to happen.  Sure .. something spectacular could happen during the next two weeks.  Osama bin Laden could release a videotape telling Democrats to be sure to get out the vote in two weeks.  He may think it, but he isn't going to say it ... so at this point I'm still saying this one is going to be a blowout.

Know this.  The wounds here will be entirely self-inflicted.  Despite a very unpopular war, there were plenty of opportunities for the Republican Party to make its case with the American people and keep their majorities.  There was illegal immigration.  Tax policy.  Social Security.  Government spending.  But they were MIA in all areas.  The Republicans have a three item agenda.  We aren't democrats, we will protect America, and we won't raise taxes.

Sorry ... this time it won't be enough.

So next January, you'll be able to turn on C-SPAN and see Dennis Hastert hand the gavel over to Nancy Pelosi.  One thing's for sure...it will make for interesting times indeed.

NORTH KOREA READY TO COMPROMISE?

Since the end of last week we've been hearing that The Gargoyle apologized to China for his test of a nuclear weapon.  Why apologize to China?  Because China was furious about the test, and they let Kin Jong Il know it.  The Norks are fully dependent on Chinese aid ... so when China is mad things aren't well in North Korea.

Now .. that brings us to the Democrats.  You will recall that as soon as Kim Jong Il detonated his bomb the Democrats were insisting that bush give him just what he wanted ... two-party talks with the United States.  Bush said no.  Two-party talks would strengthen the Nork psychopath and demean the U.S.  Bush insisted on the multi-party talks and sent Secretary of State Rice to talk to the countries most directly affected by North Korea's actions.  The result?  China puts pressure on Kim Jong Il and another test doesn't seem to be in the cards, and now they seem to be willing to return to the six-party talks.

The Democrat way --- a strengthened Kim Jong Il.  Bush's way --- Kim Jong Il bowing to Chinese pressure.

WHO'S HAPPIER?  IT DEPENDS ON GOALS.

Perhaps this one has escaped your attention, but there is a little kafuffle going on between Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of Senator John Edwards.  Elizabeth apparently told a luncheon meeting last week that she believes that she has led a happier life than that of Hillary.  Elizabeth, of course, is saying that she was misquoted.  People present at the luncheon say she was not.

So?  Who's happier?  Happiness can depend on realizing your goals.  If the goal of both women was to stay at home and raise children, then Elizabeth is certainly happier.  If the goal was to spend a lifetime seeking political power, even to the extent of remaining in a sham marriage to work toward that goal, then Hillary is certainly happier.

End of controversy.

DIPLOMAT ACCUSES U.S. ON AL-JAZEERA

If you're a diplomat in the State Department during the Bush Administration, this is probably not the best way to advance your career.  Be that as it may, Alberto Fernandez now says he "seriously misspoke" when he went on Al-Jazeera and accused the United States of "arrogance and stupidity" in Iraq.  To make matters worse, he said all of this in Arabic.

But this isn't much of a surprise.  The U.S. State Department has never been on board with the war in Iraq, much less the whole war on terror itself.  In fact, they have been sabotaging the current Bush Administration for years.  But back to Fernandez's comments.  Is he right?  Well, maybe just a little bit.

Maybe not so much arrogance ---  but there is enough stupidity to go around in Iraq for sure.  After a brilliant invasion and takeover, the post-war military planners in Iraq blew it big-time.  They allowed lawlessness and looting to take place.  They dismantled the Iraqi Army.  They got rid of the entire infrastructure in Iraq to start their own pie-in-the-sky nation building.  It didn't work.

There weren't enough troops...especially to keep order initially.  Then there's the problem of being too nice.  Rather than going into Fallujah and cleaning house, we nibbled around the edges...tried to be politically correct about it.  We didn't want it to look like the United States was occupying an Arab land, even though that was exactly what we were doing.

You could go on and on about the mistakes made in Iraq.  But for an American government official to go on an enemy television network that supports terrorism and criticize his own government...that's not too bright.

WHAT'S ON THE DEMOCRATIC AGENDA

With their victory all but assured, some are starting to wonder exactly what plans Democrats have once they do take control of the House.  Impeachment?  Nope, at least not if you believe Nancy Pelosi when she was on '60 Minutes' last night.  But there will be plenty of investigations.

All you have to do is look at who is going to be in charge of the committees.  Charlie Rangel running the House Ways and Means Committee?  Expect it to happen.  John Conyers running the Judiciary Committee?  Absolutely.  The subpoenas will be flying...for two years straight.  But Pelosi says that's not what she's ultimately after.

She actually wants to pursue a Democratic agenda....or what passes for one.  That means bills like raising the minimum wage (yawn) and more federal funding for things like stem cell research.  But the Democrats had better be careful.  Just as they will have thrown the GOP out of office this year, the Democrats will be on their way out of if they don't do what the public wants.

And that means addressing issues like illegal immigration, which won't go away.  Or tax policy.  Or the out-of-control government spending that Democrats are certain to do nothing about.  Democrats just being themselves are not going to appease the angry electorate.  Remember...the American people threw them out of power just 12 years ago.  And they're not being put back in power because of their ideas.

They're being put back into power because they're not Republicans.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

There are still some who believe Republicans are going to hold onto the House in 2 weeks.  Among them, the publication Barron's.  Future cover stories for Barron's also include "why there really is a Santa Claus" and "meet the Tooth Fairy."

Hillary Clinton could have some tough competition in 2008...and it won't be Al Gore or The Poodle.  Illinois Senator Barack Obama now says he's considering a run for the White House in '08.  This could make things interesting.

Are the Democrats planning on impeaching George W. Bush if they take control of Congress?  Nancy Pelosi says no, and even went so far as to say she wouldn't pursue impeachment on '60 Minutes' last night.  You can see for yourself by watching here.

What's in a middle name?  Well apparently a lot.  A poll was done on a race between Hillary Clinton and John McCain.  McCain won.  But when you add Rodham in there...suddenly The Hildabeast beats him easily.  You can guess which she'll use in '08.

A few Republican senators are calling for direct talks between the United States and The Gargoyle.  To say what?  The last time we had direct negotiations with North Korea, they broke the agreement and laughed in our face.  What possible purpose would it serve to do it again?

Robert Novak looks at October Surprises in recent years,
including the one Al Gore's campaign pulled in 2000...withholding information about George W. Bush's drunk driving conviction.  But curiously, Harry Reid's scandals don't seem to be getting much play in the media.

George Will, never a big supporter of the war in Iraq, says reality has begun to sink in about where the war is going long-term.  He says the Iraq Study Group, headed by former Secretary of State James Baker, has some serious questions to answer.

Professor Mike Adams, who teaches at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, has written an apology column to his employer.  This despite the fact that he says he's being punished for criticizing UNCW's diversity programs.

The American auto industry is in deep trouble and nowhere is that more evident than in Michigan.  As Star Parker reports, that's where the Democratic incumbent governor is facing off against a Republican challenger.  She takes a look at their differing approaches to the problems at Ford and GM.

Recently the population in the United States surged to 300 million.  Michael Barone takes a look at what has happened in the almost 40 years since we went from 200 million to 300 million.  It turns out things are a lot better than people think.
