re-broadcast of the Atlanta FairTax Rally.
GET READY TO PANIC AGAIN! Just in case you don't have anything to worry about today, tropical depression No. 6 is out there in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and it's heading this way! Who knows, this may be just in time to save the global warming crowd from severe bouts of depression. These people need a nasty hurricane to boost their spirits. Maybe TD No. 6 will turn the trick for them! After all ... it's September, the heart of the hurricane season is over, and we haven't had one single hurricane tough the United States this year! How in the world are we going to generate global warming panic with a record like this? IT'S LABOR DAY And no ... I'm not taking the day off. I'm actually going to spend much of the day working on "Somebody's Gotta Say It!" Some friends who have been reviewing chapters for me say that I'm being too nice ... that there's not enough red meat. I think I can fix that. In the meantime, we have some polling results that give me a good feeling on this Labor Day holiday. A just-released Zogby poll doesn't have labor leaders in what you would call a holiday mood however. The poll shows that public approval of labor unions is at the lowest point since 1981 ... and when asked whether or not they would like to be union members, three-fourths of American workers say no thanks. Why? Not sure. The poll doesn't answer that question, though it does say that the majority of workers feel that labor unions have too much political clout. Speaking of political clout, Labor Day would be as good a time as any to recognize the role of the nation's most powerful and feared union in the dumbing-down of America. I'm referring here to the teacher's unions, principally the National Education Association and the United Federation of Teachers. The negative impact these unions have had on the vitality of our country through their near-destruction of our system of government education is being felt every day. Until these teacher's unions are eliminated or stripped of virtually all of their power our education system is going to continue to suffer and decay due to overreaching bureaucracy and the lack of competition. In almost every area of our society and economy where we see inefficiency and failure of mission we will also see a lack of competition. Teacher's unions exist not for the betterment of the education of our children, but for the protection of teacher's jobs. In order to protect those jobs these unions seek to insulate their members from the consequences their poor performance. In order to do this the union leadership must make absolutely sure that no competitive pressures are introduced to the education equation. Therefore you will find virtually every annual convention of both the NEA and the AFT to be nothing more than a rally against school choice, charter schools, home schooling and vouchers that can be used for private schools. So, on this labor day, as you watch a teenager struggling to make change at the local fast food joint .... remember to thank a teacher .. and our wonderful teacher's unions. OK .. I'm in the mood now. Time to get some writing done. But first ... at least one more story for your amusement today: A FULL-OF-HIMSELF DISTRICT ATTORNEY Can you believe sentencing two young men with no criminal record whatsoever to six months in jail because they took some food out of dumpster? This is food that was headed for the landfill! Well, welcome to Routt County and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Evidently Routt County is so crime-free that the local district attorney's office got carried away when they finally found a real criminal to prosecute! Yup .. they found two guys taking some vegetables out of a dumpster behind a grocery store and threatened them with a felony arrest record if they didn't agree to spend six months in jail on a misdemeanor charge. I wonder what the taxpayers of Routt County will pay to keep these two hideous criminals in jail for six months. You should also know that the owner of the grocery store where the dumpster was located wanted nothing to do with this prosecution. Remember. Government has one amazing asset that none of us have. Government, and only government, can use force to accomplish its goals. Be careful about who you put into a position where they can wield that power. By the way, in case you were searching for the address for the Routt County District Attorney ... here you go! The Assistant District Attorney who handled the case is Kerry St. James. Rest assured, though, that the District Attorney approved this entire mess. Bonnie Roesink, District Attorney Take it easy and have some fun today. We'll be back in full force tomorrow.
