I was doing this talk radio show the day after the November mid-term elections of 1994. Hell -- I was doing this show when the Pueblo was seized by the North Koreans .... for those of you that remember that incident. Anyway ... it wasn't too many days after the Republicans took control of the congress that I warned my listeners that someday the Democrats would regain that power, and as soon as they did they were going to go right to work to make sure they never find themselves in the minority position again. Now that time has come .. and the Democrats are going to do exactly that. Do you remember the days after the election last November? There was Princess Nancy telling the media that the Democrats were going to work with the Republicans to find all of those nifty government-centered solutions to all of the problems that government has created in our country. Pelosi said she was going to give the Republicans more rights than the Democrats enjoyed while the GOP was in charge. Yeah ... right. Well, that was then .. this is now. This morning the Washington Post tells us that the Democrats now intend to put the Republicans on the sideline as the 110th Congress convenes in Washington. They're going to concentrate on pushing their agenda without allowing the Republicans any opportunities to offer alternative proposals. Now if the Republicans actually had any fighting spirit at all, they would derail the Democrat plans in the Senate. Remember, the Democrats don't have the 60 votes they need to pass legislation there. Two things stand in the way of the Republicans using their Senate strength however. First, they simply don't have the fight in them. Second .. the media. When the Democrats used the filibuster in the Senate the Republicans charged them with obstructionism. The leftist media was very slow to pick up the "obstruction" charge and run with it. Things will be quite different if the Republicans adopt this tactic. Let the GOP stand in the way of a few pieces of legislation and the Democrats will most assuredly scream "obstructionism!" I can hear it now: "The Republicans are standing in the way of legislation the American people want and need!" But this time things will be a bit different. The media will pick up the obstructionism charge and run with it .. big time. The dumb masses will be whipped into a frothy rage and the Republicans will cave. So .. what are the Social Democrats going to do to cement their power? It's a long and interesting list. Here are a few highlights: Make damned sure Social Security isn't privatized. Through Social Security the politicians -- meaning the Democrats -- have control over the retirement income of tens of millions of Americans. This control is a key to Democrat power. In virtually every election in the last 40 years Democrats have told the more ignorant voters out there that if they elect Republicans the will lose their Social Security. If people owned their own accounts the Democrats wouldn't be able to use this scare tactic. Control over these retirement funds is a must ... and the Democrats know it. Empower Unions. The great Democrat plan here is to do away with elections to decide whether or not workplaces are to be unionized. The Democrats will try to amend the law in order to permit a union to organize a workplace once the majority of workers have signed a petition asking for a union. Right now those petitions would bring about a vote .. a vote where everyone's ballot is secret. Unions, as you know, thrive on intimidation and coercion. They can bully someone into signing a petition, but they haven't been able to bully people into voting for a union on a secret ballot. The solution? Easy! Eliminate the secret ballot? The result? More unions -- more union members -- more union dues -- more union money into Democrat campaigns. Socialized medicine. It's just this simple: If the government controls your health care, the government controls you. The true path to reform of our health care system lies in the private sector, not government. But if people are in charge of their own health care, how can politicians use the threatened loss of that health care as a scare tactic in elections? The game here is simple. Work tirelessly to make Americans more and more dependent on government. Destroy their individuality and their sense of self worth. Make them believe, as Democrats do, that American is great because of government, not because of the dynamic of free people working together in a system based on economic liberty and the rule of law. Make government the most important institution in the lives of every American -- every voter --- even more important than the Church or the family. Once you've created a dependency on government all you have to do is threaten the voters with the loss of their government-provided security blanket and they'll follow you anywhere ... all the way to the destruction of the American dream. According to one news report this morning, President Bush is going to send more troops and will call for short-term sacrifice in order to bring long-term security in Iraq. This is not going to go over well...and Democrats aren't going to be pleased. The object is no longer victory ... perhaps it never was with Democrats. The object is to bail .. get out .. betray the sacrifices of so many. Perhaps they'll be drawn into a battle over Iraq and side-tracked from their agenda. Who knows. There just isn't a lot of political support to do anything in Iraq besides start bringing the troops home. One thing's for sure...if Democrats had their way, they would pull the plug in Iraq and take a walk. And despite all their talk about the minimum wage and global warming, the Dems know what got them to Washington....it was the war. And they intend to keep bringing it up over and over and over again.
One of those subjects is going to die. One of those two subjects is going the way of any discussions on the right and wrong of abortion. Would that be homosexuality? No. My experience is that minds can be changed on this issue. Yes ... there are the zealots out there who see the intricacies of human sexuality only through Bible scripture, but for the most part it is my experience that people not blinded by ideology are amenable to having their attitudes changed. Besides, the insane hatred (yes --- it's hatred. Don't give me that "God loves the sinner but hates the sin stuff) people exhibit towards homosexuals has a direct affect on people -- people who were born into their sexual orientation. Now this is not to say this particular subject is going to be a mainstay of the show .. .but it is now one that we will avoid. Belinda chose these particular shows because they were not time dated, not because of subject content.
Say what? The Grand Canyon formed by Noah's flood? Yes ... believe it or not, fundies have managed to institute a policy whereby Rangers at the Grand Canyon are not allowed to give direct answers to visitor's questions about the geological age of the Grand Canyon. And why not? Because these basic scientific facts might contradict the Genesis story of creation. Not only that, but only one new book was approved for sale in Grand Canyon National Park bookstores .. a book claiming the canyon was formed by Noah's flood. This is beyond ridiculous. Park Service rangers are not allowed to give a direct, scientific answer to a simple question as to the age of the canyon. And why not? Because the answer offends religions fundamentalists. You think I'm putting you on? Fine, just read the story for yourself. Maybe I'm just a slow learner, but it's clear that you cannot reason with these people. You can't argue with them. Their minds are set, and nothing is going to sway them. History is full of these types. They argued that the sun revolved around the earth in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. They really are to be pitied rather than scorned. Their faith in God is so fragile that they simply cannot handle any information, no matter how scientifically sound, that challenges any facet of their fundamental religious belief system. So ... for those of you who are tired of the creation vs. evolution controversy; take heart. There will be no more calls on the show arguing the issue, nor will any further emails on the matter be forwarded to my attention. I'll continue to bring you stories illustrating absurdities such as the Noah's flood formed the Grand Canyon nonsense .... how can I not? But the on-air arguing is over. Done. Finished. Kaput. As I said, nobody's mind will be changed ... so what purpose does it serve? I spent much of the last week in Naples, Florida. One of the big stories they're hammering in those parts would be the dilemma over "affordable housing." The storyline is that housing is so expensive in Collier County, Florida that people who work in the service industry, teachers, firemen, police officers and others similarly situated simply cannot find a place to live. The solution to the "affordable housing" problem seems to always be more government. The reality is that the lack of affordable housing is quite likely do to too much government, not too little. We'll address that later -- there's plenty of time. Right now I want to give you a much-needed lesson in how to be insensitive. Remember ... life is insensitive, and so is the truth. You can't get to the truth of the matter when you're spending most of your time worrying that you might end up offending someone. They were hammering the "affordable housing" issue -- big time -- in last Sunday's Naples Daily News. On page 14A they showed a three-quarter page picture of a corpulent female standing at the door of her trailer. Her twin sons were sitting on the stoop. The woman was clearly pregnant. The title of the piece was "Bills, babies and trailers." The sub-title read:
This woman is 21. Her twins are 5-years-old. That would mean they were born when she was 16. That would also mean that she got pregnant at 15. The newspaper devotes a full page to Marlen's story. She has bills to pay. She's eight-months pregnant. She's working right up to the delivery date stacking junk on the shelves at a dollar store. OK. So life is rough for Marlen Velasquez. She's having trouble finding an affordable place to live. Residents of her trailer park have been notified that the property is about to be sold. Times are rough. What the hell did she expect? You get knocked up at 15. Your job skills extend to putting crap on shelves. You're unmarried -- though engaged -- and you're eight-months pregnant with yet another child that you cannot afford! Yet here we are being urged to view Marlen Velasquez as a victim! Why she's a victim of the housing crunch! She can't find a place to live! Oh my! Whatever are we going to do? Well, for starters, why can't we ask here what the hell she's doing pregnant with her third child when she's (a) unmarried, and (b) can barely afford, if she can afford at all, the two she already has? Why does the newspaper portray this lady as a victim of everything but her own pathetic decision-making. Somewhere in this story it should have been noted that Marlen Velasquez is right where she is today ... worrying about what she's going to do when her trailer park is sold and having to work right up to the day she downloads unaffordable child number three ... because she has made some foolish choices in her life. Nobody put her in that dilapidated trailer waiting on a baby and an eviction notice. She put herself there. If she's a victim, she's a victim of her own irresponsibility. I'm not suggesting she needs help. There are many private charities and generous individuals who would probably be all-too-happy to step forward with assistance. I am saying, though, that Marlen Velasquez should not be empowered to use the government as an instrument of plunder .. to use the government to forcibly take money out of the pockets of people who have lived their lives more responsibly than she obviously has. Don't you think that it might be just a wee-bit instructive if the newspaper had at least made some passing mention of the fact that this woman was facing some tough times because she's been careless and irresponsible? Couldn't some parent then use a story like this as an object-lesson for their child? What's to be gained by simply portraying this irresponsible brood mare as a victim? What do we learn from the story when her own actions are excused in this manner. We learn that people are victims, people are not responsible for their lot in life, and that it is the government's responsibility to make things right. How insensitive of me to challenge that concept. REDNECK SCRAP BOOK This candy will get your kids off to the right start. More in the Redneck Scrap Book. READING ASSIGNMENTS! Is it at all possible that the hideous McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act might meet a well-deserved doom in a federal appeals court? Great column here from George Will. Dave Barry (love this guy!) looks back at the year 2006. This is a must-read for you. If you don't print this one out and save it we're going to send a really nasty virus into your computer. Yes ... we can do that. No surprise here .. the Democrats, who were preaching bipartisanship in November .. now reveal that they're going to push the Republicans to the sidelines in order to get their legislative program rolling. Well .. they won! The Republicans worked very hard to earn this status. You have to give Virginia Republican Virgil Goode credit. He's taking a lot of heat but he won't back off. Goode says that we had better get a grip on illegal immigration or we're going to have a lot more members of Congress being sworn in with their hand on the Quran. John Edward is pushing "universal health care." You do know that "universal health care" is the politically correct phrase for "socialized medicine," don't you? Think about it .. when the government has complete control over your health care, the government has complete control over you.
One of the former judges in Saddam Hussein's trial says the execution violated
Iraqi law and was illegal. Looks like he's a little bit late with his
protest. Besides, who cares? It's not as if the Butcher of Baghdad's guilt was
in question. | |||
