| President's Day February 18, 2008 WEB WENCH IS OFF TODAY President's Day, you know. so the winsome web wench is taking a much-deserved vacation day. This means that the Nuze won't have all the spiffiness you are so used to. Don't worry though. All the words and letters and links are here .. just no clever polls or cute pictures. THIS IS GETTING DEPRESSING
I think that we should give this election a theme. Now I know that the politicians are all using the "change" word. That word was tested in front of focus groups around the country and really rang the bells. Hillary, Barack ... change, change, change. How pathetically stupid. If someone tells you they're going to "change" something, wouldn't you be just the least bit curious as to what in the hell they are going to change from and to? But wait .. that would take a sense of inquisitiveness, wouldn't it?
So .. we need another theme. May I propose that we call this the "What can my country do for me?" election?
Just listen to these candidates. They never talk about freedom. They never talk about self-reliance. They only talk about all of the great and wonderful things that they will do for you if you just give them the power of government to get those things done. And do you know why this is? It's because that seems to be all we're interested in; what the government can do for us. This morning I heard the National Anthem being played on a radio station at 6:00 . "Land of the free and the home of the brave?" Well, OK .. there's certainly some left. But more an more we're becoming the "Land of the secure and the home of the dependent." We're turning America into a giant assisted living center. I'm really sorry to say this, but this nation is in trouble ... much like a beautiful home infested with mold. The mold just relentlessly spreads with no abatement in site. How long before we have to tear things down and rebuild? The mold? Government dependence. Mitt Romney referred to it as a sickness ... Government dependence is a sickness. Well, the sickness is spreading. Just listen to the election rhetoric. Here's what I want the government to do for me. You'll certainly hear much more of that then you will any call for freedom and independence. Really sad. I THINK THIS REALLY DRIVES THE POINT HOME. WISH I HAD WRITTEN IT! This alert came from a listeners. He was reading "The Bad Boy of Baltimore" a biography of H.L. Mencken by Marion Elizabeth Rodgers. On page 409 of that book he finds the following" "By
the mid-1930's, thanks to the New Deal, all that self-reliance had changed,
prompting Mencken to declare: 'There is no genuine justice in any scheme of
feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted
wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are
really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them.' Despite the billions
spent on an individual, 'he can be lifted transiently but always slips back
again.' Thus, the New Deal had been 'the most stupendous digenetic enterprise
ever undertaken by man.... We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we
have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and
industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.
The effects of that doctrine are bound to be disastrous soon or late.' "Buncombe," by the way, means either a county in North Carolina, a city in Illinois or another word for "nonsense." Please ... cut and paste the Mencken quote. It is so very much more relevant to what's going on today than it was in Mencken's time. Send it to your friends ... send it far and wide. Post it on your blogs. Get it out there. Wonderful stuff. FISA Huh? What does that mean? Its an acronym for "Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act." You may remember a bit of a flap at the end of last week. Nancy Pelosi bowed to the wishes of the Kucinich wing of the Democrat Party without bringing up a bill that allows our government to continue eavesdropping on Islamic terrorists. Now .. why would Princess Nancy try to derail this bill? Well ... let's see. There are a bunch of trial lawyers out there who are suing telecommunications companies on behalf of clients who ended up on the wrong side of some of the eavesdropping. These trial lawyers have donated more than $1.5 million to Democrats. They don't want the bill passed. They don't want the bill passed because it grants immunity to telecommunications companies who participated in the government-requested eavesdropping. What we have here is trial lawyers putting their fees and Democrats putting their contributions above the needs of the government to keep an eye on suspected Islamic terrorists. Gotta love those Democrats. Expect much more about this on the show today. THE REQUIRED TEACHINGS OF CLIMATE CHANGE California has decided that it is going to use its government schools to spread the indoctrination of climate chance. Well, what the hell. You didn't expect these government schools to get out there and try to actually teach students how to read and communicate, how to engage in logical thought, and just how this country became the best nation in the history of civilized man, did you? Look .. these are government schools. They're owned by the government, staffed by government union workers and run by the government ... if you don't expect these schools to be used to push the current government line, then you are simply delusional. And just where does the current government line come from? Politicians, that's where. Politicians are running with this man-made global warming fraud. Why? Because if they can convince you that the earth is in horrible danger because of the actions of man, then they can convince you that the actions of man must be controlled in order to stave off the danger. And who does the controlling? Why, government, of course!
So .. there you have it. Control. Government control. The more control government has, the more powerful government is. The more government is, the more powerful the politicians are.
Did I really have to spell it out for you that way?
So ... we have this political hack from the Silicon Valley who has proposed a bill that would require "climate change" to be among the science topics that all California government school students are taught. It would also mandate that all future science textbooks approved for California government schools include climate change. This, my friends, is indoctrination.
The bill was proposed by Sen. Joe Simitian. He says, "You can't have a science curriculum that is relevant and current if it doesn't deal with the science behind climate change. The science behind climate change, of course, will be that man is causing it. Watch this hack scream if anyone tries to teach these children that the sun has been more active and that this increase activity has warmed the earth ... by ONE freaking degree in 100 years. "This is a phenomenon of global importance and our kids ought to understand the science behind that phenomenon." Yeah .. right. As soon as "our kids" have the crap scared out of them by a good dose of government indoctrination they'll be ripe for control.
The executive director of the California Science Teachers Association also thinks it's a great idea. She does, however, show a modicum of reason. Christine Bertrand says, "There's no argument that there is climate change. The argument is how much is caused by the activities of mankind." At least she gives a nod to the idea that something other than the actions of man may be responsible. She then slides back a few notches when she says that this has nothing to do with politics.
One more time ---- ONE DEGREE IN THE LAST 100 YEARS. We really do havea problem, don't we?
GLOBAL WARMING FOR THE IMMORAL
According to a government advisor in Great Britain , drinking bottled water should be made as unfashionable as smoking. Tim Lang, the Government's natural resources commissioner says that the government needs to create a campaign to make people think that drinking bottled water is unfashionable ... just like the government has done with smoking.
The environmental minister, Phil Woolas says that the amount of money spent on bottled water "borders on being morally unacceptable." New research now shows that drinking one bottle of water has the same environmental impact as driving a car for about a mile. Me? Well, I always try have a bottle of water with me while I'm driving. It's just part of my quest to develop a carbon footprint like Sasquatch.
HERE COME THE SHARKS!
You're going to love this one. It seems that Global warming is going to bring ferocious sharks to the Antarctic waters. This is going to threaten unique marine life that has been shielded from predators by cold conditions for millions and millions of years. Yeah .. those poor penguins are going to get gobbled up by sharks and stuff. Next thing you know we'll have them in the Great Lakes
LICENSE TO SMOKE
Smokers in Great Britain could be forced to pay $20 for a permit to buy tobacco. This means that no one would be able to buy cigarettes without the permit. Smoker's rights groups call this move "outrageous" because smokers already pay a lot in taxes. Money raised from the sale of permits would ironically fund the National Health Service.
On the one hand, I support the move. Why? Because I like the thought of smokers having to pay for their idiocy. Ignorance should be painful. On the other hand, if we stop these morons from smoking they'll live longer. Stupid people using more of our oxygen can't be a good thing. Gawd knows what a drag on the taxpayers they are.
PEPSI RUFFLES MUSLIM FEATHERS
Pepsi decided that it wanted to host a photo contest. The only problem was that one of their rules got a lot of turbans in a wad ... the rule said that photos with people wearing a headscarf would not be accepted.
Associations in Turkey (which is 99% Muslim) have now called for a Pepsi boycott until the company issues a public apology. They are complaining that this is discrimination based on people's beliefs. So Pepsi decided to change the rule. It replaced "headscarf" with "religious, political [content] photos as well as those that may be misconceived." But the turbaned crowd were STILL in a wad. So Pepsi corrected the rules again. It announced that photos violating laws and general ethics would not be published.
Appeasement, appeasement, appeasement. What will upset the turbanistas next?
TAX ME MORE
The state of Virginia offers a way for residents to put their money where their mouths are. Their "Tax Me More Fund" was created in 2002. Since then, the state has raised a whopping $10,217.04. Many say the program allows lawmakers to highlight the hypocritical nature of higher-tax advocates.
Now that Virginia has a $1.4 billion budget shortfall, state lawmakers are not looking to the fund as a solution. The most the fund has ever pulled in one year was $6,602 back in 2003. In 2006, the people of Virginia donated just $19.36 to the fund.
Here's an idea. Every single time a politician calls for a tax increase maybe their own tax rate should go up by about one percent. That should shut them up.
The real trouble here is that most Americans think that other people aren't paying their fair share ... but they are paying just the right amount.
PIREP I tried the Lightspeed Zulu aviation headset over the weekend. I think that the noise cancellation is a bit better than that you would find in the Bose .. plus there is an input for your MP3 player and a Bluetooth function. The Bluetooth works amazingingly well ... just push a button on rollout after landing to tell your loved ones that you're on the ground all safe and sound. I love mine .. and you can find them for a bit less than you would pay for Bose. READING ASSIGNMENTS:
