IMMIGRATION HEATS UP

Previous Posts

By Neal Boortz

Whether or not it was on Obama and the Democrats' agenda, Arizona has managed to thrust the issue of illegal immigration into the spotlight. Last Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed a bill into law that would allow Arizona police to crack down on illegal immigrants. After all, Arizona is the busiest gateway between the US and Mexico for human and drug smuggling.

Here's how the law works: it would acknowledge - as if it were needed - the fact that it is a crime in Arizona to be in the country illegally. Imagine that! Please remember that our director of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, recently said that entering this country illegally is NOT a crime. Interesting thought process there.

The new Arizona law makes it illegal for employers to hire illegal immigrants or to knowingly transport illegal immigrants. It would also require that police officers question people about their immigration status if there is reason to believe they are in the country illegally. The final element of the bill would allow for lawsuits against government agencies that prevent the enforcement of immigration laws. Any immigrant who cannot prove that they are in the country legally will be arrested, fined $2,500 and thrown in jail for up to six months. Governor Jan Brewer is determined to defy the critics and alarmist and "enforce the law evenly, and without regard to skin color, accent, or social status."

Now for the reaction.

Barack Obama says that the law is "misguided" and wants the Justice Department to determine whether the law is legal. He also called the law "irresponsible." He says the law "threatens to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe." Yeah ... it's so hugely irresponsible to cite crossing the border into this country illegally as a crime. Can't believe we would do that. And it's also really, really bad that we would make it a crime for a company to hire people in this country illegally. Interesting thought process there. But then, we have a president who needs minority votes to keep his power. No surprise.

John McCain said that if Obama doesn't like Arizona's new immigration law, Obama should dispatch National Guards to the patrol the border.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund plans to legally challenge the law, saying that it "launches Arizona into a spiral of pervasive fear, community distrust, increased crime and costly litigation, with nationwide repercussions."

Some "Public Advocate" Bill de Blasio says that this law is "un-American!"

A 13-year-old from Phoenix Emilio Almodovar says, "We can't walk to school any more. We can't be in the streets anymore without the pigs thinking we're illegal immigrants." Well isn't that wonderful. An Hispanic kid calling the cops "pigs." Someone check his mama's status please.

The President of LaRaza Janet Murguia says that the bill promotes racism and it will lead to racial profiling. Racial profiling? Give me a break. After all, how many Swedes have crossed the border into the U.S. from Juarez?

Take a look at the protests that took place over the weekend. Protestors became violent, throwing water bottles at police. One student leaders justifies the action saying, "this is youth and they are really upset."
