PRIVATE PROPERTY MEANS NOTHING ANYMORE

There is a case before the Supreme Court having to do with private property. The case focuses on beachfront property in the Panhandle of Florida. Residents say that their private property extends all the way to the surf. In other words, the beach is their private property; that's what they paid for. The issue? The state comes along and does some surveying and determines that these beaches are critically eroded. So the government comes along and puts new sand on the beaches, extending the beach seaward. But here's the catch: under Florida law, all new land created by adding this sand is then considered public property. The government see this as "protecting the right of the state to preserve critically eroding shorelines for public interest ..." The property owners, on the other hand, see it as a land grab.

The mood in Washington right now is anti-private property. We'll watch this one for you.
