Nancy Pelosi has really been sticking to her talking points. Her favorite phrase: new direction. Yup, she wants to let everyone know that she and the Democrats are working to take this country in a new direction! Remember this quote from before the healthcare vote: "Kick open that door, and there will be other legislation to follow ... We'll take the country in a new direction." Well she managed to get that one accomplished. New direction toward a government takeover of healthcare, here we come! Then after the healthcare vote, she told Barack Obama: "If you had not been elected president of the United States, we would not be celebrating this victory for change to take our country in a new direction."
The latest example from Nancy Pelosi ... she was making a speech to Emily's List where she declared that women were going to be the deciding vote in the November election. (Let's see .... Do I want to go into a rant here about how women are so much more oriented toward security than they are to liberty? Do I want to mention that this is why women - particularly single women - tend to vote in heavier numbers for candidates who promise government-provided comfort? Probably not. It's Friday.)
Pelosi went on to say, "Democrats are taking our country in a new direction. Republicans want to take us back to the failed policies of President George W. Bush. We cannot go back to the Bush policies."
New direction, new direction, new direction ... but has anybody stopped to question whether they actually agree with the direction in which Pelosi is taking us? I'll remind you of where we are headed - an entitlement society and a fascist economy. A society based on redistributive wealth and the idea of "fairness," and an economy based on the fascist principles of private ownership of business with onerous government controls. A new direction away from a free market system where every day millions of Americans decide the direction of our economy through their economic choices, to a centrally-planned economy where the decisions are made not by consumers and entrepreneurs, but by government bureaucrats and political hacks. A new direction to a society where hard work and success are no match for government handouts and laziness.
We are discovering - albeit two years too late - what Barack Obama meant by "fundamentally transform." Between the transformation led by Barack Obama and the new direction with Nancy Pelosi at the helm, we are careening toward a European-style fascist welfare state. This will be a country where government is the more important factor in every Americans' lives. How do you feel about that? How do you feel about these people having that much power over you?
Vote in November. We can still go in a new direction, but we don't have to follow Nancy Pelosi.
