They are having a rough time getting humanitarian aid from the airport to the city. Press dispatches are telling us that very little of the aid is getting beyond the airport perimeter. Reasons are varied. Violence, of course, is a concern. We've all heard the reports of gangs of Haitian young men roaming the streets with weapons. Oddly enough, these gangs welcome the presence of reporters? Why? Because they believe that the reporters afford them some protection from the Haitian police. Some reports say that the Haitian police order the reporters to leave, and then fire random shots killing and wounding looters. One looter was reported to have been lynched. In the meantime other reports say that many of the troops of the 82nd Airborne have been bivouacked on the airport since their arrival last week. The story is that their commanders don't want them to venture out into the city until they can carry enough aid for everyone. I'm no expert, but that doesn't make all that much sense to me. Aid is needed .. but so is order. The Haitian police are saying that the American troops are welcome .. and wonder where they are. Aid agencies say that they can't get out there to distribute aid because of violence. American troops are ordered to stay put because they don't have enough aid to carry outside airport borders. Haitian police say they need the American troops to help restore order so that aid can start flowing through Port-au-Prince. Does anyone know what the initials SNAFU mean?
If you want the horror of this situation to really hit home you should have been watching TV news last night. Here's the note I wrote to myself as I watched this scene unfold:
"My God! They're carrying corpses to landfills in garbage trucks ... along with garbage. The trucks drive up and dump ... out comes garbage - then bodies - then more garbage. Who knows who these people are? Their loved ones and friends will be searching for them for years ... never knowing, but certainly guessing their fate. Where will they go to mourn their loss? To a dump?"
OK .. here is my first venture into a comment that can be described as political since this disaster occurred. It's all very simple .. and very true. If every single nuance and detail of this disaster and the effort to help the Haitian people was exactly the same, with the only difference being that George Bush is president instead of Barack Obama, the left would be slamming Bush for the situation in Haiti. Jesse "The Sloganmaster" Jackson and Al "The Liar" Sharpton would be blasting Bush in front of every camera in sight. Kanye West would be looking for someone to tell that "George Bush don't care about black people." Now are we making mistakes with the delivery of aid in Haiti? Sure. Can't help it, in a situation like this mistakes are going to happen. Blame Obama? No way! I believe he cares and is just as anguished over this situation as most people. Just sayin' that if Bush were in office right now he would be catching hell from all quarters.
"Well what would you do Boortz?"
I'm not there. There's no way I can pretend to know more about the situation than the people in charge. That doesn't mean I can't make suggestions though. How about this: Take all available American troops and send them out through out Port-au-Prince; not to distribute aid, but to restore order. Make the city safe for those with the expertise to help those most in need. I don't' see why that doesn't make sense.
If you haven't seen this rescue yet, get a box of tissues ready....
