Yesterday it was (for me anyway) euphoria. I default to freedom .. and when freedom is that important to you Democrats are a natural enemy. So, sadly, are not a few Republicans. I'm also a fan of small government and maxed-out individual responsibility and self-reliance. If that's your MO, the Democrat party simply can't be your political home. If you're a plunderer, however, no doubt you belong in the line for the Democrat voting booth.
Now that 36 hours have passed since the Massachusetts election we can, I think, look at what happened more clearly. There've been a lot of voters to listen to, and a lot of pundits. I think the message now is clear. ObamaCare was the number one issue. ObamaCare is the reason they won't be rushing to swear Scott Brown in on Capitol Hill.
The voters saw a special deal cut for Louisiana. Then they watched Senator Ben Nelson get a pass for the State of Nebraska on some Medicare taxes. And then there was that amazing deal Obama struck with the labor unions. Yeah .. the Americans really loved the idea of getting a tax break on your health insurance plan IF .. and only if, you happen to be a union member. Sweet. Look at the polls in the Massachusetts Senate race. You'll see the turn for Brown just about the time we found out about Nebraska's deal.
People are wondering how the Democrats will respond. Obama made a smart move yesterday when he told congress not to make any moves ram the health care plan through before Scott Brown is seated. Hopefully this means that ObamaCare is dead.
Perhaps the Massachusetts voters asked some of the same questions we've been asking on the show.
Why not allow people to deduct the cost of their health insurance from their taxable income the way their employers can?
Why not allow health insurance companies to sell their products across state lines like almost every other company can?
Why not get rid of some insurance mandates that drive up the cost of policies? Does it make sense that hair transplants must be covered in Connecticut?
Why not allow numbers of small businesses get together to form a consortium for the purpose of purchasing health insurance for the entire group?
Why not pass some tort reform to reign in the Democrat's most loyal constituency, the trial lawyers?
The voters heard every one of these ideas, and they heard the Democrats shoot every one of them down. No .. the solutions had to be more government, not less. At some point it just stopped making sense.
Let's just hope the Republicans don't get too full of themselves. They didn't win this Senate seat in Massachusetts. Face it. The Republicans could not win a Senate seate in Massachusetts on their best day. This seat went to Scott Brown the only way it could have: The Democrats lost it. The Republicans now have to prove themselves. They've already blown one voter revolution .. they can either promote another one here, or cut it off at the knees.
By the way ... if the Republicans want to know how to promote a voter revolution, they should take a look at this website. Contract From America.com. This is where you can see what many Americans are looking for in these midterm elections. Note, please, what is running number one ... but a huge margin.
Going to be fun to watch. What a great time to be doing a talk show.
