First up to the plate we have our Chief Apologist Barack Obama. El Prezbo has been playing host to Mexican President Felipe Calderon at the White House. So yesterday, Obama and Calderon stand out in the Rose Garden and proceed to criticize Arizona for its illegal immigration law. Obama says that the law allows for the possibility of people being "harassed or arrested." He says, "The judgments being made in applying this law will be troublesome ... In the United States of America, no law-abiding person -- be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico -- should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like." Now is it just me or is that a blatant misinterpretation of the law? The Arizona law would allow state law enforcement officers the same immigration enforcement privileges as federal law enforcement officers IF there is a lawful encounter and IF there is reason to suspect the person is in the country illegally. Example: During a lawful traffic stop, if a person can't provide a valid driver's license, or a passport, or a US address, can't speak English and is blaring Mariachi music from the car stereo ... then the powers of reasonable logic kick in. The law specifically states that a law enforcement officer cannot stop someone simply because of what they look like. Any law enforcer in any state could take advantage of his or her position of power to profile and stop people based on their appearance. But one would hope that this person would then be fired. What's so different about Arizona? The difference is that state and local Arizona officials WILL enforce the law at hand. Federal officers will not. That's the difference here!
"I think the Arizona law has the potential of being applied in a discriminatory fashion."
Question: How many laws do you know of that do not have the potential of being applied in a discriminatory fashion? The Arizona law actually says that it cannot be applied discriminatorily .. but does that mean that the potential for discriminatory application is not there?
So after our own president stands up and criticizes one of his own states for daring to enforce the law ... the Mexican president stands up to get his two-cents in. Calderon says that Arizona's law is discriminatory and would "[force] our people to face discrimination." He then warns that Mexico would reject any effort to "criminalize migration." OK .. let's stop right there. Migration? Get a grip. No one has a problem with people migrating LEGALLY to this country. The problem is ILLEGAL immigration .. people who break the law by coming to this country without bothering to adhere to the rule of law and get proper paperwork. These people are criminals. Why is this such a hard concept for some people to understand?
